Mill Creek Entertainment Selects Aug. 23 For The DVD Debut Of Director Brent Christy's County Line: All In

You find hidden treasures now and then that make the direct-to-video and indie filmmaking world worthwhile.   Sure, there are plenty of “15-minute” movies, you know them, 15-minutes in (or sometimes less) and you get the urge to start screaming.   Who made this crap?   And out you go.

Back in May of 2018 an indie film treasure surfaced on DVD titled County Line, directed by Shea Sizemore and starring Tom Wopat as a grizzled ex-lawman who takes matters into his own hands when his protégé (played by Jeff Fahey) is murdered.

So well-received was this out-of-the-blue indie that two sequels were ordered, with the film’s cinematographer, Brent Christy (The Legend of 5 Mile Cave, The Warrant, Blue Ridge), moving up to the director’s chair and Tom Wopat (as Luke Duke on The Dukes of Hazzard series, plus such films as Django Unchained, Jonah Hex, Fair Haven, etc.) returning as the no-nonsense Sheriff Alden Rockwell.

News arrived this past week that Mill Creek Entertainment has captured the home entertainment packaged media distribution rights to the sequel, County Line: All In, which will be making its DVD debut on Aug. 23.

This time out there’s a whodunit mystery, with a none-too-popular lawyer, Garret Barlow (Travis Smothers) — who just happens to work for the local heavy — who is found dead on the Maksville/York county line.   Murdered, but who has jurisdiction?   Sheriff Rockwell, or that uppity city-slicker newcomer, Sheriff Jo Porter (Kelsey Crane — Lake Dead, Scream of the Bikini, Lucid, Cardinal Matter)?

The water-and-oil pairing forces them to combine their resorces to solve the case, which is not as clear cut as one might suspect.   Indeed, the nicely placed red herrings keep you guessing right up until the explosive third act.

Also returning in Country Line: All In are Abbi Butler (The Pea Shooter, The Odds, Autumn) as Rockwell’s combat-weary daughter, Ember, and Patricia Richardson as Maddie Hall, who runs the local diner (perhaps best known as the four-time Emmy nominee for her role as Jill Taylor in the Home Improvement sitcom, plus such films as Ulee’s Gold, In Country, Viva Las Nowhere).

Mark it down, the mystery, the suspense and thrills all await on DVD from Mill Creek Entertainment on Aug. 23 with the release of County Line: All In.

 

 

 

4K Ultra HD For Quiet Days In Clichy From Blue Underground On Oct. 25

Blue Underground, with sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has done a terrific job of updating its eclectic and genre-themed film catalog on a regular basis … and since May of 2020 Blue Underground has been building its own 4K Ultra HD library as well.

The latest upgrade, which will also be its newest 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack edition, is none other than director Jens Jørgen Thorsen's 1970 film release of Quiet Days in Clichy.  

The original fine-grain 35mm negative was recently unearthed, which is the new source for this 4K film restoration … and, as a bonus, the 35mm negative is uncut, with an additional six-minutes of unseen footage.

Grove Press, which was no stranger to controversary and running battles with censorship (certainly, they must have had attorneys on call well-versed in the First Amendment), made their mark in 1959 with the publishing of D.H. Lawrence’s Lady Chatterley's Lover, which was quickly banned and seized by the government.   That was a mistake.   The First Amendment is there for exactly this reason and the courts agreed.

The flood gates were opened and Grove Press led the way.   By the late 1960s the arthouse trend in films had emerged and so the company bought up Amos Vogel’s Cinema 16 and jumped in feet first with experimental, arthouse and foreign-language imports.   Well, guess what … Grove Press was back in court with Swedish filmmaker Vilgot Sjöman’s I Am Curious (Yellow), which was banned. 

They won, again, in court, the First Amendment trumps this nonsense.   They then picked up the domestic distribution rights to Thorsen’s film in 1970 and when it was exhibited in May of that year it was promptly seized by the U.S. Government for being obscene.  Do we need to say it?  Grove Press won again in court.

Based on Henry Miller’s early two-part novel from his life in Paris before the war (first published as sort of a work-in-progress in 1940 and later expanded by Miller in 1956 … and, yes, published by Grove Press), Quiet Days in Clichy follows the sexual adventures of Joey (Paul Valjean) and Carl (Wayne Rodda), who live hand-to-mouth in their “vintage” apartment in the Clichy-sous-Bois area on the east side of Paris.

Blue Underground first put out a DVD in the early days of the format (through Image Entertainment in 2002 and then re-released in 2004 by Blue Underground itself) and then upgraded to a Blu-ray edition in 2011 … now the definitive 4K Ultra HD version will be available on Oct. 25.

Bonus goodies include, as mentioned, the completely uncut and uncensored presentation of the film, which also features five-songs by Country Joe McDonald.  The six-minutes of additional footage (which was likely cut for running time considerations) is included as a separate featurette, plus the court documents are presented here as well as three vintage featurettes — “Midnight Blue,” “Songs of Clichy” and “Dirty Books, Dirty Movies: Barney Rosset on Henry Miller.”

 

 

 

 

SRS Cinema Tabs Sept. 13 For The DVD Debut Of Director Shawn C. Phillips' Amityville Karen

SRS Cinema, with sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has an inspired horror tale from filmmaker Shawn C. Phillips ready for genre-fans to enjoy on DVD this coming Sept. 13.

Who knew that when writer Jay Anson delivered his book in 1977, “The Amityville Horror,” that an entire cottage industry of films would be inspired, beginning with director Stuart Rosenberg’s The Amityville Horror, which was released during the summer of 1979.  

Something on the order of at least 30 films have carried the “Amityville” moniker since then (with more on the way).   Which is, of course, an immediate identification — a red flare to genre fans — that what you are about to see is going to be scary!  

But what happens when you combine that built-in terror of an Amityville film with the latest affront to all things holy and descent, the nagging presence of a KAREN!!    

Actor-turned-director Shawn C. Phillips has come up with what could very well be the most terrifying entry in the Amityville film franchise (film legacy) yet … Amityville Karen!!   The DVD from SRS Cinema that will certainly rock the horror world on Sept. 13.

Vlogger, Playboy model and parody artist (her Lady Gaga is spot-on) Lauren Francesca was recruited for the title role of Karen and word is that she absolutely nailed it.   So much so that Shawn C. Phillips and Lauren Francesca have teamed up for four additional films — Mistletoe Massacre, Cheer Bloody Murder, Amityville Shark House and Amityville Bigfoot.

Karen is hell on wheels, a real work of art … dare we say it, a bitch.   Demanding and unforgiving … my way or the highway.   She’s given plenty of rope to establish just how irritating she can be and then the moment comes.   A struggling brew house/tasting room (with truly bad entertainment), has a cursed vintage and so Karen simply helps herself to it, which turns her into a monster (isn’t that redundant??).   The slaughter begins … the blood, and the wine flow, and Karen continues the tradition of Amityville being a hell-on-earth (in all the best ways)!

VCI Entertainment Launches 16-Strong Western Double-Feature DVD Promotion On Oct. 11

Ride baby ride … classic Westerns are at the forefront Oct. 11 as VCI Entertainment has no less than 16 double-features heading home on DVD starring silver screen legends of the 1930s and 40s.

Showcased here are Allan “Rocky Lane with the double-feature collection of El Paso Stamped and Silver City, plus Big Boy Williams starring in Lucky Boots and Danger Trails.

“Wild” Bill Elliott stars in Law Comes to Texas and In Early Arizona, while the iconic Buck Jones gets not one, but two double-feature releases, one teaming California Trail with Treason, while the second double bill has Dawn Trail hooked-up with Ridin' for Justice.

The “Durango Kid,” Charles Starrett, stars in The Durango Kid and Lawless Plainsman, while the legendary Johnny Mack Brown has two double-feature options, Everyman's Law and West of El Dorado, plus the action continues with the pairing of Law of the Range and Raiders of San Juan!

Hopalong Cassidy (in real life, William Boyd) stars in Three on a Trail and The Eagle's Brood, and at the iconic Tim McCoy stars in four separate double-feature DVD releases.

 

 

 

Paramount Home Entertainment Readies Star Trek 4K Ultra Promotion For Sept. 06

Paramount Home Entertainment will be putting on a star show on Sept. 6 with 4K Ultra HD editions of the six original Star Trek movies, including a special “Director’s Edition” of the 1979 theatrical release from director Robert Wise that launched the film franchise, Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

There will be two 4K purchasing options for Star Trek: The Motion Picture.  The first is Star Trek: The Motion Picture—The Director’s Edition (a Combo Pack), which features an additional companion Blu-ray disc with new and vintage special features.   It took six months to complete this restoration.

Newly prepared bonus features include commentary from the restoration team of David C. Fein, Mike Matessino and Daren R. Dochterman (on the 4K disc), a new 8-part documentary titled “The Human Adventure,” deleted scenes, effects tests, costume tests and computer display graphics (all on the companion Blu-ray disc).

Vintage bonuses include the Robert Wise, Douglas Trumbull, John Dykstra, Jerry Goldsmith and Stephen Collins​ tag-team commentary and a collection of previously released featurettes.

The other Star Trek: The Motion Picture purchasing option on 4K Ultra HD is titled Star Trek: The Motion Picture—The Director’s Edition—The Complete Adventure, which features the above outlined material, plus a companion 4K Ultra HD disc with the Theatrical Cut and the first-ever longer version of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, originally broadcast on TV in 1983.

Also, on Sept. 6, are 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack editions of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country.
