New Theatrical Release Trend Gets A Bump • "Helpers" Love Nimona • Flash (Pre-Orders) • The Offering • The Idol: Season 1 • And More!

On the new theatrical release front, we got a bit of bounce this past week with a 2023 output projection of 521 new movie arrivals by New Year’s Eve … up from 514.

The top two boxes ($25 million-plus; $100 million-plus) remains at 64.  The pre-pandemic average was 94, so we have 30 hit films missing in action.

The latest to skip theatres for the pit of doom — that would be streaming — is the animated film from the directing team of Nick Bruno and Troy Quane, Nimona.

Well, technically-speaking it didn’t totally bypass theatres as it got a “limited” showcase one week before it was streamed by Netflix (June 30).   No box office results were reported (standard operating procedure for Netflix), but judging from the Rotten Tomatoes tracking site, the film was well-received — both by the critics and ticket-buying audiences with 93% and 94% scores, respectively.

The film’s production budget is also MIA, but judging from its long and winding path from pre-production to theatrical rollout on June 23, 2023 (an eight-year odyssey), coupled with some sources calling it the best animated film of the year, we suspect that it is substantial.   How much Disney wrote-off when it shuttered the production, before being resurrected by Annapurna Pictures and Netflix, clouds the issue.

If Elemental, which is likely to hit the $100 million box office mark domestically, has a 92% audience rating from Rotten Tomatoes, then isn’t it reasonable to argue that Nimona may have had a similar run if given the opportunity?  It certainly has the fan base.

Sure, it’s not a direct apples-to-apples comparison, but even if Nimona only tracked at half what Elemental is likely to finish with ($50 million instead of $100 million), that means that one of the missing hit theatrical films that is leaving us 30-short for the year is right here.

Oh, but it gets better.   Since this is a Netflix streaming release, it is unlikely to see the light of day in the home entertainment packaged media arena.   Fans that want DVD, Blu-ray or even a 4K copy of the film will have to look to “helper” sources to find one.

Yes, Nimona began streaming on Netflix June 30 and on the same day (within hours) it was available on Blu-ray.  That is what the streaming madness that dominates entertainment has done — theatres get shafted, packaged media is bypassed and pristine masters are served-up on a platter for anyone willing to take advantage of it.

For fans of ND Stevenson’s graphic novel-turned-animated-movie — who are not on Netflix, or lucky enough to be within driving distance of one of the Landmark Theatres that exhibited the film — must now look to a “helper” source as the only real viewing option.

And what else got “helper” action this past week?

Another Blu-ray edition of Extraction 2 surfaced, pre-orders for director Andy Muschietti’s Flash are being taken for Blu-ray (with a July 18 delivery date … ditto for The Little Mermaid) and director Oliver Park’s The Offering arrived on Blu-ray from a “helper” source this past week (that’s just three … there were many more).

Movies weren’t the only action from “helper” sources … I'm a Virgo:  Season 1, The Idol: Season 1, neXt: The Complete Series, Silo: Season 1, Rings of Power - Season 1, Rough Diamonds - Season 1, Saint X - Season 1, Schimigadoon - Season 2, Swimming with Sharks - Season 1 and True Lies - Season 1 all were released on Blu-ray (and that’s just in one week).

Theatrical catalog, let’s not forget that.   The studios, with their vast libraries dating back to the dawn of the sound era, have pretty much given up releasing anything on DVD, but during this past week alone, “helper” sources churned out 90 different movies for consumers to select from, including The Secret of Santa Vittoria, The Ox-Bow Incident, Pretty Maids All in a Row, The Heartbreak Kid, Tommy and A Touch of Class.

That’s a wrap for this week … next week it will be more of the same (you can count on it).

Nimona Gets Quick "Helper" Release On Blu-ray • Is This Another Blown Netflix Opportunity?

This is how show business works these days.

Graphic novelist ND Stevenson’s Nimona is acquired by 20^th Century-Fox during the summer of 2015, it goes into production during the summer of 2017 with a theatrical target date of early 2020.

Along the way 20^th Century-Fox is acquired by Disney and the film is postponed, postponed, moved, postponed and eventually canceled.

In April of last year, the news surfaced that Netflix had team up with Annapurna Pictures and the project was being resurrected with Nick Bruno and Troy Quane brought on board to direct.

On June 23, the film opened in a few theatres around the country — Netflix is mums the word on box office results — and the early buzz was off the charts (Rotten Tomatoes at 94 percent), with some saying the Nimona was the best animated film of the year.

Netflix began streaming it on June 30, which means that a pristine film master was served-up, and within hours it was available for fans to enjoy on Blu-ray.

Yes, the “helpers” (we no longer use pirate or bootlegger to describe such activities) are good, slick and fast.   They can take a streaming event and turn it on a dime.

Netflix is unlikely to release it on either DVD or Blu-ray, so the void is filled by “helper” sources and your average consumer doesn’t realize that the source is not legit — the packaging is pro and they’ve likely been there before to snap up copies of Mandalorian and Prey (surprise, not physical media … legitimately).

A multi-million-dollar animated production skips theatres (where it would have been a hit) and then bypasses home entertainment packaged media to go directly to streaming.   Two lucrative revenue sources are blown away to stream baby stream.

Netflix did the exact same thing with Extraction 2 a few ago (see analysis here – Link), which might have cost stockholders some $70 million in unrealized profits.   Was that duplicated with Nimona?

Yup, that is how show business works these days!

DVD On Record-Setting Release Pace At The Midway Mark In 2023 • Package Media On DVD Thrives

The first snapshot results are in for the DVD format.   It is a preliminary number count as stragglers and below-the-radar releases will be ferreted-out and added to the various databases in the weeks ahead, so keep that in mind … the count is wrong, but it is right for today; for this moment.

The headline is that 2023 is currently on a record-shattering pace for this aged format that the Hollywood studios once cherished, but have now all but abandoned.

As of June 30, we have tracked and posted 15,035 new releases on DVD.   That number, on its own, is meaningless unless you put it into some sort of context.   Last year, 2022, was a record-setting year with a revised total of 22,124 DVD product offerings.   At the turn (the six-month mark), the total was 11,477, so even with the summer doldrums, the year split almost evenly with 51.88 percent arriving in the marketplace during the first half of the year and 48.12 percent arriving during the months of July through December.

Just using that same split as a rough marker, we are tracking at 28,983 potential new DVD releases during the course of the year.

That’s record-shattering.   Nothing (other than last year) is in even close.

DVD peaked in 2005/2006, with the arrival of the Blu-ray format.   These peak years saw 15,360 DVD releases in 2005, matched by 15,261 in 2006.   For the next 15 years the release counts crabbed sideways, with a low point reached in 2016 (11,216).

So why is the DVD format suddenly on fire these days?

In a word, streaming.   When the pandemic hit the traditional Hollywood studios went all in with streaming, and in the process the theatrical distribution mousetrap that they (collectively-speaking) built over the course of 100 years was abandoned.  Along with that went home entertainment packaged media and the Promo, Better, Best distribution system was suddenly in ruins.

It took a few months for certain business interests to recognize the new focus of the studios — with their vast film and series libraries — and once they did it has been an all-out effort on the part of “helpers”/”void-fillers” (pirates; bootleggers as traditional terms to describe the activity that is taking place is so very out of date in this new age of streaming) to take full advantage of two things.

Real or Helper??

First, the pristine masters being served up 24/7 by the various streaming platforms.   No longer is it necessary to use a camcorder or iPhone to capture the hottest theatrical blockbusters at the local cineplex … no, no, those days are gone.   The studios simply serve them up on a platter and within hours they are available on DVD and Blu-ray.

Second, with the focus on streaming, there seems to be a business decision (opportunity costs; whack-a-mole costs; indifference … pick one) to not — repeat NOT — enforce copyright protections.   So, all films from the 1930s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s (everything from the 20^th Century for that matter) is now perceived to be in the public domain and therefore fair game for distribution by “helpers” on DVD.

Why DVD?   Because it is backwards compatible … it doesn’t matter if you have a 4K Ultra HD player, a Blu-ray player or an ancient DVD player in your home, they all play DVDs.   Most movies run under 120 minutes … DVD works.   Longer movies, series programming … the “helpers” use Blu-ray.

What’s the source breakdown at the six-month mark?   Would you be surprised if the “Hollywood” studios were dead last in market share for DVD output?

Real or Helper??

Through the first six months of 2023, the studios and their affiliate labels (CBS Home Entertainment, Showtime Networks, HBO, etc.) have delivered 201 new SKUs, or a release share of just 1.34 percent.

Next come the “Legit” players.   These are independent labels, the boutique labels, religious, train-watching, magic, fitness, music and how-to labels.   In the first half of the year there were 209 of these non-studio sources that were active with one or more releases.   Collectively they delivered 1,881 new DVD titles, or a SKU-count market share of 12.51 percent.

Wait a minute.  1.34 plus 12.51 doesn’t make 100.  Yes, what we “see” as the DVD marketplace (traditionally speaking), only accounts for 13.85 percent of the release pie.

For lack of a better term, micro broadcasters (cable access, local government networks, etc.) have delivered 2,963 DVD titles during the first six months of the year, or 19.71 percent of the SKU-count.   That’s more than all of the tradition home entertainment sources combined.

These local broadcasters have discovered that there is market on DVD — a marginal market to be sure — for programming that they produce.   The local high school football game is going to be played no matter what.   Basketball, hockey, lacrosse, volleyball and on and on.

If it is being broadcast in the local market, then the production is “in the can,” so why not offer DVD copies for sale?

The same holds true for local in-the-park concerts, graduations, parades and countless government meetings.   It’s not the overall dollar amount (small to be sure), but at the local level every penny counts … DVD has become a workhorse (and the traditional evaluation of the home entertainment industry doesn’t even know that this is taking place).

All right, 1.34, plus 12.51, plus 19.71 still doesn’t add up to 100.

66.44 percent of all releases on DVD during the first six months of the year — 9,990 titles — were from 70 different “helper” sources.

To put it simply, consumers can’t get what they want from the legitimate source, so they seek out “helper” sources, and they cannot tell the difference.   The packaging looks good, the same source was online last week, and the week before that, so they must be legitimate.

That’s the state of the DVD marketplace at the six-month market in 2023.   Outright piracy accounts for two-thirds of everything that has arrived at the consumer level.   There’s no sign that the powers that be are going to do anything about it … DVD lives; packaged media is thriving.

Mill Creek Entertainment Sets Aug 08 As The Street Date For The DVD Release Of Gary Owen Stand-Up Spotlight Featuring Breakin’ Out the Park And #DoinWhatIDo

Mill Creek Entertainment announced this past week that Aug. 8 will be the street date for newest edition to its popular “Stand-Up Spotlight” line of comedy specials on DVD.

Going center stage this time around is Gary Owen in the DVD release titled Gary Owen Stand-Up Spotlight.   As with the other releases in this series, the DVD includes two complete comedy specials … “Gary Owen: Breakin’ Out the Park” and “Gary Owen: #DoinWhatIDo.”

We kick off the laughs with his first comedy special, the 2008 gem, “Breakin’ Out the Park.”   By this time, Owen had completed his Navy career and found an unlikely career path of auditioning for the Black Entertainment Television’s “Comic View,” which ultimately led to him hosting the 1998/99 season.

With a lifepath that included being raised in a trailer park — with his six siblings — distinguished service in the Navy, and with largely a black fan base, by 2008 Owen had also appeared in a half-dozen movies …  he not only had unique life-experiences to draw from, but by now he had honed his comedy skill-set that enabled him to deliver a 45-minute stand-up routine that absolutely rocked the placed.

Teamed with his early special, is the summer of 2019 Showtime comedy special, “#DoinWhatIDo,” which was filmed live at the Charline McCombs Empire Theatre in San Antonio.

By 2019, Gary Owen was a household name — three previous Showtime specials — and over 20 years of doing stand-up!  Here you are looking at over 60 minutes of a comedian at the top of his game — professional, polished and knock-out funny from the first moment until the final curtain call.

Priced to own at just $9.99, the Gary Owen Stand-Up Spotlight on DVD from Mill Creek Entertainment this coming Aug. 8 is worth every penny … a laughfest investment of the highest order!!
