Paramount Home Entertainment Announces Two December Release Selections • 4K Ultra HD Debut For Titanic (Dec. 05) And Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem (Dec. 12)

Paramount Home Entertainment will be setting sail on Dec. 5 with the two-SKU 4K Ultra HD launch of writer/director James Cameron’s 1997 Best Pictures winner, Titanic, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet, Billy Zane and Bill Paxton.

Not only did Titanic win the Best Picture and Best Director Oscars, it also cleaned up in the technical arena with seven additional Oscars … plus James Horner won for Best Music Score and Celine Dion’s “My Heart Will Go On” won Best Song!   Eleven Oscar wins in all.

This is the first time the film has been available as a 4K Ultra HD purchasing option.   Film fans will have two choices on Dec. 5.   These are: a 4K Ultra HD edition (with a companion Blu-ray disc housing the bonus features) and a “Limited Edition Collector’s Boxed Set.”

As to bonus materials common to both SKUs, the 4K Ultra HD disc will include two commentary options … the first features filmmaker James Cameron, while the second is a tag-team commentary with the cast and crew.   

The companion Blu-ray disc features four newly-prepared featurettes — “Titanic: Stories from the Heart,” “Titanic: 25 Years Later with James Cameron,” “Behind-the Scenes” and “Trailer Presentation Hosted by Producer Jon Landau” — plus vintage materials that includes, deleted scenes (with optional commentary by Cameron), additional behind-the-scenes footage, four additional featurettes — “Deep Dive,” “$200,000,001: A Ship’s Odyssey,” “Videomatics” and “Visual Effects” — plus the Celine Dion music video, “My Heart Will Go On.”

The “Limited Edition Collector’s Boxed Set” has all of the aforementioned bonus selection, plus a hardcover coffee table book, blueprints of the Titanic with the locations of key scenes, a collection of movie props and the sheet music for “My Heart Will Go On.”

In another December product move, Paramount Home Entertainment has selected Dec. 12 as the street date for a full spread of the directing team Jeff Rowe and Kyler Spears’ summer theatrical reboot of the TMNT film franchise, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.

The ARR works out to 130 days and the domestic box office $118.1 million.

Planned for distribution are stand-alone DVD and Blu-ray editions, plus a 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack.

Bonus features are a quartet of featurettes — “TEENage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” “The Mutant Uprising,” “New York, New York: The Visual World of Mutant Mayhem” and “Learn to Draw Leo.”

Mill Creek Entertainment's Winning Christmas Trio From Filmmaker Marco Deufemia Heads Home On Nov. 7 • 3 Film Holiday Collection On DVD

Mill Creek Entertainment gets into the Christmas-season spirit on Nov. 7 with not one, not two, but a triple feature of seasonally themed romantic film delights that will be available as a DVD set.

Although officially titled 3 Film Holiday Collection, this set could actually be titled “Director Showcase: The Films of Marco Deufemia,” who is no stranger to fans of Mill Creek Entertainment’s priced-to-collect DVD product offerings having previously delivered Christmas in Wolf Creek, Country Roads Christmas and Love in Wolf Creek (November of 2022).

So let’s get to it.  Up first is Christmas with the Knightlys, teaming Celeste Desjardins (as Madison Turner in the Obsession trilogy) with Joe Scarpellino (Christmas on the Slopes, Stay the Night) as a very miss-matched couple.  Georgia is a teacher, who unwitting ends up on road — trying outrun the press — with the pompous Chase Knight (aka Knightly), who is something of playboy notorious for hopping from one affair to the next.

The question that you have to answer as events unfold, is Chase really falling in love with a simple “teacher,” or is this just another game for him … a play at seducing her?

Up next is Deufemia’s Christmas in Big Sky Country.  Here we are introduced to the lovely Becca Collins (Rebecca Dalton — Christmas Wedding Planner, A Perfect Christmas, Santa’s Squad), a naturalist (she works with bears), who has a meet-cute moment with Logan (Oliver Renaud — Christmas on the Slopes) at the local coffee shop as the film begins.   

After this happy opening sequence, Becca arrives at her sister Rose’s house to help out with the planning for the holidays.  Everything is just wonderful, but right in the middle of a phone call with Rose’s (played by Tamara Duarte) husband, Josh (Mark Ghanime), he is cut off.   It seems that he works at a remote oil-drilling site in Alaska and he could be in some danger … the news is sketchy at best.

As if on cue, the doorbell rings and at the door is some guy with happy talk news that everything will be all right.  If you guessed the “guy” at the door is from the coffee shop, you’d be spot on … it turns out he represents the oil company and he assures both Becca and Rose that Josh is just fine.  

So is there something romantically brewing between Becca and Josh (love at first sight), or is Josh just using her to get Rose to do something (not in her best interest) for the company he works for?   Nov. 7 to discover the answer!! 

Rounding out this trilogy of films from Marco Deufemia is Christmas in Maple Hills starring Emily Alatalo (The Breach, Christmas Catch) as Valerie Warrick, who is in danger of losing her grandparents’ dairy farm over some very old paperwork.   Jumping back and forth in time we she her, with the help of Walker (Marcus Rosner), try to uncover the mystery and set things right, while in the past we see the events unfold with her grandmother, Marguerite (Amada Jordan) that set up the current situation.

It’s a race against time … tick tock, tick tick.   All or nothing!

Film Masters Has Newly Restored Editions Of Director Roger Corman's The Terror And Little Shop Of Horrors Ready For Release As Both DVD And Blu-ray Editions On Dec. 12

The Film Masters has a little something lined up for the Christmas season.   The Dec. 12 date should be circled on your calendar, especially if you are looking for stocking-stuffers for those film buffs that are hard to buy for.

On Dec. 12 look for the Roger Corman double-feature — newly restored from 35mm archival elements — of The Terror and Little Shop of Horrors.  These are classics — both in a film sense and as cinema history — and will be available as both DVD and Blu-ray product offerings.

First, The Terror, if you don’t have a copy of Roger Corman’s book, “How I Made a Hundred Movies in Hollywood and Never Lost a Dime,” think about tracking one down.   It’s a great read.In any case, in Chapter Seven Roger goes into some detail on how The Terror, starring Boris Karloff and Jack Nicholson, got made.   What an adventure!!

It goes like this, Corman is directing The Raven (1963 with both Karloff and Nicholson, plus Vincent Price and Peter Lorre) and absolutely loves the sets that were constructed for the film.  Being both a frugal and creative guy, he hits upon the idea of shooting another film (quickly) before the sets are torn down. 

To accomplish that, he has actor/writer Leo Gordon knockout 60 pages of the script that will shot in two days using the sets of The Raven and holding over Boris Karloff for two days … Nicholson will be his co-star.   Corman literally shot one scene after another … bang, bang, bang. 

The rest of the script will be finished later, which is a story onto itself.

In any case, Corman needed additional footage and has his new assistant — perhaps you might have heard of him — Francis Ford Coppola (fresh from film school) take Jack Nicholson and Sandra Knight (as Helene) and go to Big Sur to shoot the sequences leading up to Nicholson’s arrival at the castle.  It took longer than expected.

He still needed more footage, so he sort order he had Monte Hellman shoot some material and this was followed by Jack Hill, who did what he could with the time allotted him.   Still not finished, no problem, Jack Nicholson steps in and gets the last of The Terror on film (five directors).

Included with The Terror is a newly-prepared commentary option with C. Courtney Joyner and Dr. Steve Haberman and the featurette titled “Ghosts in the Machine: Art & Artifice in Roger Corman’s Celluloid Castle.”

Teamed with The Terror as a bonus feature is Little Shop of Horrors, which was filmed as something of an after-thought in just two days in 1959.   It was the fastest film Corman ever shot and it turned out to be a gem … a black comedy horror film.   

Included with the Little Shop of Horrors is commentary teaming author Justin Humphreys with the film’s star, Jonathan Haze.  

Lionsgate Home Entertainment Carves-Out Nov. 21 For The Physical Media Rollout Of director Kevin Greutert’s Saw X

It’s time to get together.  Get on the same page and do things right … stop the self-destructive madness that haunts Hollywood these days.

On the same day that Universal Pictures Home Entertainment announces Oppenheimer for physical media — and in doing so eliminates the VOD window between the theatrical release and the subsequent DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD rollout — Lionsgate Home Entertainment falls back to the usual “losing” pattern and tabs Nov. 21 for the physical media launch of director Kevin Greutert’s Saw X.

So what’s wrong with Nov. 21 for Combo Pack editions for both the 4K Ultra HD (with Blu-ray) and Blu-ray (with DVD) formats, plus a stand-alone DVD purchasing option?   

Nothing, expect the studio has shoved in an Oct. 20 VOD window (sell-through and/or rental), which gives the very sophisticated “helper” community a 30 day window to peddle nicely packaged Blu-ray editions to unsuspecting consumers who either don’t know the difference … or don’t care.

For the record, the ARR is an insanely-quick 53 days and domestic box office receipts currently stand at $33.3 million.

Bonus features common to all three physical media configurations include commentary by director Kevin Greutert, who is joined by cinematographer Nick Matthews and production designer Anthony Stabley, deleted scenes and “Make-up Department Trap Tests.”

Exclusive to the Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD SKUs is the six-part “making-of” documentary titled “Reawakening” — “I Want to Play a Game,” “This Time It’s Personal,” “Another Time, Another Place,” “There Will be Blood,” “Leave Nothing to Chance” and “Live or Die” — and featurette titled “Drawing Inspiration.”

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment Elimates Early VOD/Streaming Window For Writer/Director Christopher Nolan's Oppenheim With Nov. 21 Release Date For Physcial Media Product Offerings

Kudos to Universal Pictures Home Entertainment!!  

While one data point does not signal a trend, it is encouraging that writer/director Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer will not, repeat not, get an early VOD/Streaming window. 

Instead, it will be a full spread of physical media product offerings on a day and date basis with the digital window.   This move by Universal cuts the “helper” community out of pirating Blu-ray editions of the film prior to the arrival of the legitimate copies.   

They have gotten so good at the packaging and the “turn” (literally within hours of the digital launch — either VOD rental/sales window or streaming, in this case on Peacock) that unsuspecting consumers can’t tell the difference (or don’t care).

The street date for 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray and Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack editions of Oppenheimer will be Nov. 21.   There will also be a stand-alone DVD edition available on the same date.

For the record, the ARR works out to 123 days and the domestic box office haul was an eye-popping $323.3 million.

As to bonus goodies, there is a seven-part “making of” presentation titled “The Story of Our Time: The Making of Oppenheimer” — “Now I Am Become Death,” “The Luminaries,” “The Manhattan Project,” “The Devil of Details,” “Walking a Mile,” “Can You Hear Music?” and “We Can Perform This Miracle” — plus the “Meet the Press” Q&A session and two additional featurettes, “Innovations in Film” and “To End All War: Oppenheimer and the Atomic Bomb.”

MVD Entertainment Group Bestows "Rewind" Status On Anthony Michael Hall's Hail Caesar • On Blu-ray Dec. 12

MVD Entertainment Group has a new addition to its popular “Rewind Collection” of Blu-ray releases heading home on Dec. 12.

 

This would be actor-turned-director (his only feature film) Anthony Michael Hall’s 1994 comedy, Hail Caesar, which features a bunch of familiar faces and a slew of music written, produced and sang by Hall and his group Hall of Mirrors — in the film the band is called Hail Caesar.

 

The film is a perfect for MVD’s “Rewind” series — “cult classics … from the video store.”   Not only does Hall, who had scored with Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club and Weird Science in the mid-80s, showcase is musical talents (actually released the soundtrack, some 13-cuts), but he tried his hand as a director.  

 

Along the way he made friends in the industry and was able to get them on board, which adds to the “star” luster of Hail Caesar.   Included in the mix are Robert Downey, Jr. (the same year he did Oliver Stone’s Natural Born Killers … Hall and Downey had worked together on Weird Science), Judd Nelson (The Breakfast Club), Samuel L. Jackson (the same year he did Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction) and “The Riddler” himself, Frank Gorshin.

 

The story, which is used to showcase the various musical numbers, has Julius (Hall) trying to land a recording contract (after being kicked out of college for lack of effort) … all this while in love with Buffer Bidwell (played by Bobbie Phillips — as Dee in Showgirls), the daughter of eraser factory owner “Mr. Bidwell” (Nicholas Prior), who tries buy Julius off, but ends up making a bet with him involving his daughter.

 

There’s some deadly side dealing involving “Mr. Bidwell” and his factory, which puts Julius in danger of being the patsy.   Hail Caesar is a comedy, so not to worry about the fate of this Julius Caesar … who finds true love by film’s end (Annie, played by Leslie Danon), a recording contract and a little “something” else.
