Writer/Director Joshua Nelson's Aware Of The Wolf Makes Its Blu-ray Debut From Bayview Entertainment On Dec. 31

Self help, serial killings and werewolves?   

What an interesting mix.   That’s exactly what Bayview Entertainment is serving up on Dec. 31 with the Blu-ray debut of award-winning writer/director Joshua Nelson’s Aware of the Wolf.

We are introduced to self-help guru Terry (Tony Murphy — The Things We Cannot Change) and his clients at his “Terry’s Transformations” group encounter meetings.   Meek and abused … weak-willed losers one and all, but Terry is a motivational force and he teaches them to get in touch with their inner “wolf.”

Meanwhile, detectives Wagner (Suzanne Johnson — The Things We Cannot Change, Menopause) and Sanchez (Guillermo Arias) are investigating a series of gruesome murders — remains scattered here and there in the woods.   Perhaps a serial killer on the loose … or maybe some rogue carnivore run amok (bear, mountain lion, wolf … pick one).

The question is, are Terry’s clients part of a victim pool who are destined to end up torn to pieces in those spooky woods?   Or, could they be the “serial killer(s)” disposing of their respective tormentors?

Of course there’s no such thing as a werewolf, right?   That can’t be the answer!!

Catch the Blu-ray debut of Aware of the Wolf from Bayview Entertainment on New Year’s Eve to discover the truth.  Are clients of “Terry’s Transformations” just lambs to the slaughter or, dare we say it, a happy group of self-help killers who have found their “inner wolf?” 

 

 

Arrow Video's 4K Ultra HD Debut Of Writer/Director Alfred Sole's Alice, Sweet Alice Will Take Place On Feb. 11

Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has a new 4K film restoration (from the original camera negative) of writer, director and producer Alfred Sole’s 1977 horror (an American production with distinct giallo overtones) entry, Alice, Sweet Alice.

The newly minted 4K Ultra HD release will be available on Feb. 11. 

As with so many independent film productions during the 1950s, 60s and 70s, where theatrical and television broadcast (think: MOW) were the only options, c had only a limited number of 35mm prints struck (something like 75 to 100 prints initially).   

These were then “bicycled” around the country from market to market, which meant staggered openings.   For example, the film opened in Nov. of 1977, but didn’t reach the Los Angeles area (and the view of the Hollywood trade press) until May of 1978. 

In fact, it may not even have found play dates in the Los Angeles market except for the fact that something had changed to give it more commercial appeal!   

When the film began production in the summer of 1975, a nine-year-old cast member by the name of Brooke Shields (who plays Karen Spages and is murdered early in the proceedings) made her film debut.

In April of 1978, she was suddenly the topic of discussion, both in the trade press and in the media in general, for her starring role (opposite Keith Carradine and Susan Saradon) in director Louis Malle’s Pretty Baby.

And, as with many indie films looking for a home, Alice, Sweet Alice was released initially (film festivals and overseas) as Communion, and then remarketed in 1981 with Brooke Shields in a starring role (oh, please) as Holy Terror.

Arrow Video has all three viewing options available with this 4K Ultra HD release (sweet)!

 The focus of the film is not on Brooke Shields, she’s the victim of a grisly murder. Rather her sister, Alice (played by Paula Sheppard — Liquid Sky), is the chief suspect in her sister Karen’s apparent “ritual” murder … and there is good reason to believe Alice might indeed be the deranged killer.   

Sorry, no spoilers here … we will just say that little Karen is just the first in a series of killings (and there is nifty twist at the film’s conclusion).

As to bonus features, there are two commentary options.   The first is an archival commentary teaming filmmaker Alfred Sole with editor M. Edward Salier (Silent Scream), while the second is newly created and features TCM programmer Richard Harland Smith. 

Additional bonus goodies include deleted scenes, a split-screen version comparison and five featurettes — “First Communion,” “Alice on My Mind,” “In the Name of the Father,” “Sweet Memories” and “Lost Childhood: The Locations of Alice, Sweet Alice.”

 

 

Fun City Edition's 4K Film Restoration Of Director Richard Benjamin's Racing With The Moon Arrives On Blu-ray On Feb. 11

Fun City Editions, with sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has a new 4K film restoration (from the original 35mm camera negative) of director Richard Benjamin’s 1984 film release of Racing with the Moon.

 The Blu-ray will be available on Feb. 11.

 The script from Steven Kloves (The Fabulous Baker Boys, Wonder Boys … and eight Harry Potter film script adaptations) was his first and it was only element in place (as early as 1981/1982) — long before discussions about who would direct or star in the film.  

However, when studio heads are hired and fired the projects in the pipeline tend to go into “turnaround.”   That is an industry turn for “limbo,” which was the case with Kloves’ script … in limbo, not once but twice!   

The third time was the charm for Racing With the Moon as it landed at Paramount during its Footloose/Flashdance period, which featured a focus on young actors in the early stages of their careers coupled with high energy, engaging productions.    

Here you have Sean Penn, Nicholas Cage and Elizabeth McGovern (early in their respective careers) starring … what more can ask for?

 Bonus features include two commentary options.   The first is an archival commentary with director Richard Benjamin, while the second teams Bill Ackerman with Marya E. Gates.   There is also a making-of featurette.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Tabs Jan. 21 For The Full-Spread Physical Media Launch Of Director Tom Hardy's Venom: The Last Dance

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has selected Jan. 21 as the street date for the full-spread physical media launch of director Tom Hardy’s Venom: The Last Dance.

The ARR comes in at 88 days and the domestic box office haul was $139.2 million.

The premium VOD launch is Dec. 10, which gives the “Helper” community six weeks to peddle their own Blu-ray editions of Venom: The Last Dance to unsuspecting genre fans and physical media consumers in general.

As for SKU configuration, the DVD and Blu-ray editions will be stand-alone, while the 4KUltra HD arrives as a Combo Pack product offering (with Blu-ray).

Bonus goodies include deleted and extended scenes, a blooper reel, outtakes, the Tom Morello and Grandson music video (“One Last Dance”) and five featurettes — “Venom’s Inner Circle,” “Venom Unleashed: The Action & Stunts,” “Selected Scenes PreVis,” “Savor the Last Bite: The Venom Legacy” and “Brock Bottoms: Mr. Chen Interview.”

What's The Story With Director Clint Eastwood's Juror #2 And Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment's No-Frills Blu-ray And DVD Rollout On Feb. 4?

Clint Eastwood and Warner Bros. have been in something of a filmmaking and distribution partnership for going on fifty years.    The auteur filmmaker of legend, Clint Eastwood, who learned the trade from his mentor director Don Siegel — on time, under budget and commercial — delivered the studio hit after hit over the years.

So it came as something of a surprise when his latest film, Juror No. 2, was delegated to made-for-cable status.   What?  An Eastwood film ... stream-able, but not theatrical!!

When the word got out that Juror No. 2 was being sacrificed to the streaming pit of doom on MAX, the blog-o-sphere erupted in amazement … as a result of the blowback, the studio reluctantly found something like 38 screens to release the film theatrically (limited) on Nov. 1 (in the “dead zone” before the Thanksgiving rollout of Oscar-contenders).   

Those who were lucky enough to catch the film theatrically gave it a 90% rating (Rotten Tomatoes) and an amalgamation of critics agreed with an average 94% rating.   In other words, Juror No. 2 is commercial (Eastwood hasn’t lost his touch despite being 94 years old … and of course Juror No. 2 was on time (debuting at the AFI Fest) and likely under budget (the Don Siegel school of filmmaking).

It’s not for us, mere mortals, to question the studio’s decision, just to report on what took place.

The physical media launch will be on Feb. 4 as both DVD and Blu-ray product offerings (no 4K Ultra HD in the mix at this time).   

For the record, the ARR works out to 95 days and the estimated box office take from the film’s limited run is $270,000 (Warner has declined to provide box office totals).

The VOD window is Dec. 3, which means that the “Helper” community gets nine full weeks to distribute their own Blu-ray editions as a result of the quick streaming window (the format of choice by pirates for its capacity … HD has nothing to do with it).

As to bonus features for the physical media launch on Feb. 4 from Warner Bros. Discovery Home Entertainment … nothing.   No making-of featurette, no behind-the-scenes, no commentary, deleted scenes nada … just the movie!

Director Perry Lang's Dec. 10 Blu-ray Release Of Men Of War Gets "Rewind Collection" Status From MVD Entertainment Group

MVD Entertainment Group has selected Dec. 10 as the street date for the newest member of the company’s popular “Rewind Collection” series of Blu-ray and DVD releases.   Classics — cult and otherwise — from the golden age of the video rental store!!

The latest member of these elite physical media celebrations (packed with extras one and all) is none other than director Perry Lang’s 1994 film release of Men of War, starring Dolph Lundgren from a script from none other than John Sayles that was written over a decade early … but never found a home.

John Sayles is a gifted writer who can delivery characters three and four-deep.   Most screenplays flesh-out the main characters (backstory, motivation, etc.) and sometimes a nod to the secondary characters, but Sayles delivers memorial details for the three and four-level characters.   Just take a gander at Lone Star or Limbo (brilliant)!

The story follows Nick Gunar (Dolph Lundren — after Red Scorpion and Universal Soldier he emerged as bona fide action star … celebrated by Stallone’s The Expendables film series beginning in 2010), a former Special Forces member who is down on his luck.   He’s offered a well-paid “mercenary” gig and reluctantly takes it since he needs the money and the action will be in the tropics, well away from the chilly winter scene of Chicago.

Once on the island, Nick has a change of heart — he sees no purpose in the mission — and decides not to kill off the native population to get bat shit (aka: Guano).   Half of his men go along with him … the other half are paid off by Nick and told to leave.  

End of story, right?   Not so fast.   A former colleague, Keefer (Trevor Goddard) and “The Colonel” (played by Kevin Tighe), reorganize and with reinforcements declare war on Nick, his men and the locals.   To the death!!

Bonus delights included with this “Rewind Collection” release (on both Blu-ray and DVD) include a newly-prepared introduction from filmmaker Perry King, raw footage and dailies of selected scenes from the film and the featurette titled “An Unsafe Place: Making Men of War.”
