Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Prepares An April Shower On New Film Vault Releases For DVD

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
It’s April showers — figuratively speaking — on DVD from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment as they go to the vaults for a deluge of 16 new film releases and a vintage theatrical cartoon collection that will have collector’s barking for joy!

There are new releases for all four street-date Tuesdays during the month of April, which kickoff with five new vault treasures on Apr. 3.   Among these are the Kay Francis 1938 tearjerker, Comet Over Broadway (directed by Busby Berkeley and John Farrow), Carole Lombard and Chester Morris star in The Gay Bride (1934, direction by Jack Conway) and Ona Munson and “skyscraper riveter” Tom Dugan co-star in director Clarence G. Badger’s 1931 romantic comedy, The Hot Heiress.

Rounding-out the Apr. 3 selections are the 1932 baseball comedy starring Joe E. Brown, Fireman, Save My Child (directed by Lloyd Bacon, with Evalyn Knapp) and director Robert Youngson’s 1964 documentary The Big Parade of Comedy.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Apr. 10 brings us the double-disc DVD assembly of Droopy: The Complete Theatrical Collection, which will have collector’s lining up for their copy.  All 24 theatrical cartoons in the series — beginning with the 1943 release of Dumb-Hounded, the Oscar-nominated One Droopy Knight (1957) and the final entry, Droopy Leprechaun — are included here.

On the theatrical front on Apr. 10, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has director Thorold Dickinson’s historical drama, The Prime Minister, starring Sir John Gielgud as Benjamin Disraeli.  It was filmed in England just after Winston Churchill became Prime Minister and the pivotal Battle of Dunkirk had taken place.   Prints of the film did not arrive in the United States until after Pearl Harbor (released domestically in February of 1942).   Which begs the question, how did they get here?

Also being released on Apr. 10 on DVD are Alexander Hamilton (1931, with George Arliss as Hamilton), director Alfred E. Green’s 1934 film adaptation of Willa Carter’s novel, A Lost Lady, starring Barbara Stanwyck and Frank Morgan, and director Irving Rapper’s 1941 drama, Shining Victory, teaming James Stephenson with Geraldine Fitzgerald.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyThe following week, Apr. 17, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is back with director Bryan Foy’s “first all talking picture,” Lights of New York (released during the summer of 1928 and filmed on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank — The Jazz Singer, released on Oct. 6, 1927 was roughly 75 percent silent, but it did mark the beginning of the sound era — and director Lloyd Bacon’s 1931 musical comedy, Manhattan Parade (also filmed in Burbank).

Also on Apr. 17 are director Lloyd Bacon’s 1930 romantic drama, A Notorious Affair, starring Billie Dove, Kay Francis and future Sherlock Holmes icon, Basil Rathbone and the pre-code MGM film, The Ship From Shanghai (filmed in Culver City on the MGM lot), starring Conrad Nagel and Kay Johnson.

Finishing off the month on Apr. 24 are the 1929 “talkie,” Condemned (with Ronald Colman and Ann Harding), The Devil to Pay (1930, again with Ronald Colman and co-starring Loretta Young and Myrna Loy) and the 1937 romantic comedy, Woman Chases Man, teaming Miriam Hopkins with Joel McCrea.

The Criterion Collection Prepares A 4K Restoration Of Filmmaker John Waters' Female Trouble For A June 26 DVD And Blu-ray Release

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
The Criterion Collection announced its June slate of DVD and Blu-ray film restorations this past week and without question, the number one selection for the month is cult filmmaker John Waters’ Female Trouble.

You ask why?   Back in the early 1970s I was VP of Great Western Theatres, a Southern California operation that at its peak had something like 30 screens … it was fun, great fun.

It was during this time that we obtained an option on the Las Palmas Theatre in Hollywood and had all sorts of sugar cane and lollipop visions of it becoming the West Coast arthouse of arthouses … it was a gay porn venue when we took it over, so we cleaned it up and readied it for the grand reopening and we had the very good fortune of landing the Hollywood premiere of John Waters newest film for the occasion, Female Trouble!

That’s the reason why The Criterion Collection’s June 26 Blu-ray and DVD release of Female Trouble is the lead film selection for the month … it carries with it fond memories and a night in Hollywood like none other.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
The Cycle Sluts at the West Coast premiere of Female Trouble
We had Las Palmas Avenue closed for the evening from Selma Avenue to Hollywood Blvd., we had one of those giant Kleig lights out front, we had Divine arrive in a limo and we had an honor escort for the film’s star to make her grand entrance … the Cycle Sluts!   It was amazing, the film was amazing, Divine was amazing, but the whole idea of making the Las Palmas Theatre an arthouse just didn’t work out.

As to the June 26 DVD and Blu-ray release of Female Trouble, The Criterion Collection has a new 4K restoration of the uncut 97-minute version of the film, which comes with bonus goodies that include a vintage commentary track by filmmaker John Waters and a 1975 interview session with Waters, Divine, Mink Stole and David Lochary.

Other bonus delights include a newly prepared video session with John Waters (one of the funniest men on the planet) and author/critic Michael Musto (“Downtown,” “Manhattan on the Rocks” and “Fork on the Left, Knife in the Back”), on-set footage, deleted scenes and alternate takes.

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Getting a new 2K restoration on June 26 is director Ingmar Bergman’s 1960 Best Foreign Language Oscar-winner, The Virgin Spring … DVD and Blu-ray editions will be available.

Bonus features include a vintage (circa 2005) commentary option with Ingmar Bergman and film scholar Birgitta Steene (author of “Ingmar Bergman: A Reference Guide”), filmmaker Ang Lee’s 2005 introduction to the film and newly found video sessions (also 2005) featuring actors Gunnel Lindblom and Birgitta Pettersson.

Rounding out the June selections from The Criterion Collection are Manila in the Claws of Light (June 12, 1975 … directed by Lino Brocka, presented in Tagalog), El Sur (June 19, 1983 … directed by Victor Erice, presented in Spanish) and Michael Moore’s 2002 film, Bowling for Columbine (June 19).

Mill Creek Entertainment Selects May 1 For The Release Of The DVD Collection Titled The William Castle Western Collection: The Fastest Guns of the West

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyIf you say William Castle, you immediately think of horror films.  But before he became a producer and showman extraordinaire with such horror classics as House on Haunted Hill, The Tingler, 13 Ghosts and Strait-Jacket, he learned the craft of movie-making at Columbia Pictures under the guidance of Harry Cohn and “Jungle Sam” Katzman.

Between 1943 and 1956 he directed 40 films … and not a single one of them was a horror film.  He did four films in The Whistler series (with Richard Dix), a trio of the Crime Doctor (Warner Baxter) movies and some gangster/crime films — Johnny Stool Pigeon (1949 with Howard Duff, Dan Duryea, Shelley Winters and newcomer Tony Curtis) and Undertow (also 1949 with Scott Brady, Johnny Hart, John Russell and another newcomer Roc Hudson … soon to be Rock Hudson).

He also did Westerns, really good Westerns, during this period and Mill Creek Entertainment let it be known this past week that on May 1 they will be releasing as a double-disc DVD set The William Castle Western Collection: The Fastest Guns of the West … collectors, film buffs and Western fans are already salivating at the thought of picking up this beauty at the bargain price of just $19.98 (and that’s before discounts at retail).

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Included in the mix is one of his first films at Columbia Pictures, the 1943 Western, Klondike Kate, starring Ann Savage and Tom Neal, who would make screen history together in 1945 with the film noir classic, Detour.

He then became very active in the genre during 1953 through 1955, delivering Conquest of Cochise (1953, in Technicolor with John Hodiak, Robert Stack and Joy Page), Masterson of Kansas (1954, in Technicolor with George Montgomery as Bat Masterson, James Griffith as Doc Holliday and Bruce Cowling as Wyatt Earp … with Nancy Gates and Jay Silverheels) and Jesse James vs The Daltons (1954, in Technicolor with Brett King as the “son” of Jesse James, Barbara Lawrence as woman he saves from the hangman and James Griffith, William Phipps, John Cliff and William Tannen as the Daltons … and Rory Mallinson as Bob Ford, the man who shot Jesse James).

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyKlondike Kate, Conquest of Cochise, Masterson of Kansas and Jesse James vs The Daltons make up half of the collection … you could quit right there and call this a “keeper,” but Mill Creek Entertainment has four more in The William Castle Western Collection: The Fastest Guns of the West set on May 1 to thrill fans.

These are: Battle of Rogue River (1954, in Technicolor and starring George Montgomery, Richard Denning and Martha Hyer) and The Gun That Won the West (1955, in Technicolor) starring Dennis Morgan as Jim Bridger with Paula Raymond and Richard Denning).

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph TribbeyRounding out the collection, which are not really Westerns (in the truest sense) are Duel On The Mississippi (1956, in Technicolor … the action takes place in 1820, starring Lex Baxter, Warren Stevens and Patricia Medina as Lili Scarlet) and Uranium Boom (1956, black and white with Dennis Morgan, William Talman and Patricia Medina).

WOW, just WOW, that’s all you can say about these William Castle films that Mill Creek Entertainment has assembled for the May 1 DVD debut of The William Castle Western Collection: The Fastest Guns of the West.

Also announced this past week is the May 1 DVD release of director Lee Philips’ 1986 biopic, Barnum, starring four-time Oscar nominee Burt Lancaster (with a win for Elmer Gantry) as the legendary showman Phineas Taylor “P.T.” Barnum (of note, 20th Century-Fox Home Entertainment’s The Greatest Showman arrives in the home entertainment marketplace on Apr. 10).
