Arrow Video Prepares The Blu-ray Collection Titled Cold War Creatures: Four Films From Sam Katzman For Release On Sept. 14

Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has just announced a stunning four-film Blu-ray collection showcasing the films of producer Sam Katzman.

Titled Cold War Creatures: Four Films from Sam Katzman, genre fans will be counting the days until this limited-edition collection arrives on Blu-ray this coming Sept. 14.

Before we get into the films that make up this really-cool collection, a few words have to be said about Sam Katzman.   The word prolific doesn’t do him justice.   In a career that spanned from 1933 to 1972, Sam Katzman is credited with producing 239 motions pictures and serials, including the original Superman, Atom Man vs. Superman and Batman and Robin serials, and numerous theatrical releases using a “stable” of directors that allowed him to have multiple films in production at the same time.

We begin in the summer of 1955 with director Edward L. Cahn’s surprise horror hit, Creature with the Atom Brain.  It might have started out as a gangster revenge film, but the script from German novelist-turned-screenwriter, Curt Siodmak (he fled Nazi Germany and delivered such 1930s and 40s screenplays as The Wolf Man, I Walked with a Zombie, The Beast with Five Fingers … and more) mutated into a terrific terror flick.

The film touches all of the right bases, with veteran horror and sci-fi actor Richard Denning in the starring role as a police “doctor/detective” investigator by the name of Dr. Chet Walker, who is assigned the strange case of an unstoppable monster who is murdering gangsters, plus the local district attorney.   The problem that Walker is confronted with is that the fingerprints at the crime scenes (plural) match those of a dead man … there is also radiation present. 

It gets even more sinister as the success of the killings spawn those running the experiment to steal more dead bodies from the morgue … an army is being built!!

Bonus goodies include commentary by critic Russell Dyball, a vintage condensed 8mm presentation of the film (very popular at the time) and the feature-length documentary titled Sam Katzman: Before and Beyond the Cold War Creatures.

Next in the collection is the summer of 1956 horror flick from director Fred F. Sears, The Werewolf, which was filmed on location at Big Bear Lake and stars Don Megowan (The Great Locomotive Chase, The Creation of the Humanoids) as the sheriff of the mountain hamlet of Mountaincrest.  

In the opening sequence an attempted mugging ends in with the would-be thief having his throat ripped-open by a strange creature.   When the deputy sheriff (Harry Lauter) follows the trail of the killer into the woods he too is attacked, but comes away with just some “claw” marks on his shoulder.  

It turns out that a man by the name of Chris Marsh (Kim Charny — Suddenly, The Guns of Fort Petticoat) was involved in an auto accident, was cared for by a couple of doctors — who turned into mad scientist for a moment — who injected him with an experimental serum, which now turns him into a werewolf whenever threatened.

Bonus features include commentary by critic Kat Ellinger and the newly-prepared featurette titled “Atomic Terror: Genre in Transformation.”  

From March of 1957 comes director Edward L. Cahn’s Zombies of Mora-Tau, a horror tale about cursed diamonds that cause the dead to rise, who simply want their treasure returned.   Autumn Russell, Gregg Palmer, Majorie Eaton and the fifty-foot woman herself, Allison Hayes star. 

As to bonus features here, critic Kat Ellinger returns for commentary and there is the newly-prepared featurette titled “Atomic Terror: Genre in Transformation.”

Rounding out the selections from Arrow Video’s Sept. 14 Cold War Creatures: Four Films from Sam Katzman Blu-ray collection is director Fred F. Sears’s summer of 1957 creature-feature film, The Giant Claw.

Test pilot Mitch MacAfee (Jeff Morrow — This Island Earth, Kronos) is a military base in the Arctic working on the installation of a new radar defense system when he spots an Unidentified Flying Object — UFO — which causes an alert and jets are sent aloft to investigate.   One of the jets is lost and MacAfee is blamed for the false alarm … but soon a commercial airliner reports another UFO and then goes missing.  It’s a mystery.

With his lovely tech assistant in hand, Sally Caldwell (Mara Corday — Tarantula, The Black Scorpion), they head back to New York, but quickly run into the UFO again and are forced down in Canada.   They soon discover that the UFO is not what it seems, but a giant ET from another galaxy … not just any galaxy, but an anti-matter galaxy!   If it is not stopped, the planet is doomed!!

Bonus features include a newly-prepared commentary with critics Emma Westwood and Cerise Howard, an 8mm version of the film and the new featurette titled “Family Endangered.”

 

 

 

Bayview Entertainment Selects Sept. 14 For The DVD Debut Date Of What Could Be The Sleeper Romantic Comedy Of The • Max And Me

Bayview Entertainment announced this past week that writer/director Claire Bryétt Andrew’s romantic comedy, Max and Me, will be making its DVD debut on Sept. 14.

Let’s get this out there right up front, Max and Me could easily be the home entertainment sleeper comedy of the year.   Done on a micro-budget, the film is about as sweet and lovely — and funny and sad — as they come.  

You could also say, that a new star has arrived, and that would be Lily Bleu Andrew in her feature film debut — she had a small role as Lori in the Teen Wolf television series — and has been writing and producing her own short films.  She is also the sister of the director.  

We begin with Geordie (Matthew Erick White — Until Then, Murder in the Vineyard), the new high school kid in town.   He is shy, reserved and tends to keep to himself, but one day he spots the girl next door and falls in love.   He literally has to talk himself into going over to introduce himself, which is very, very tough for him.

Knock, knock, a woman answers the door and Geordie comes up with the lamest introduction possible.   He explains that he is new in town and wondered if there was anyone living there that might be of his age.   He’s shocked to learn that yes, the woman had a daughter, but she’s now dead!!

Geordie retreats back home, confused and bewildered.   Knock, knock, again the girl he had seen through the window answers the door this time.   Her name is Max, she had Cystic Fibrosis and lost the battle a year ago, but she had an unfinished “bucket list” and was wondering if he would help her complete it.   He’s in love, in love with ghost, and he’s all in … even if people around him think he is losing his mind.

Sept. 14, one of the sweetest love stories in recent memory and certainly one of the best home entertainment releases of the year.   Mark it down, Max and Me.

Also heading home on Sept. 14 from Bayview Entertainment, and from a very different spot on the genre spectrum, is director Martin Munthe’s sci-fi thriller, Stinger.

There’s a problem, the USS Newark, a nuclear submarine, has gone missing.  It seems that there was a “mad scientist” experiment being carried out on the sub and it got out of hand and the entire crew was killed.

Marines, with Dr. Carly Ryan (Michelle Meadows), are sent to find out what took place on the sub.  Along with them is Ellie Winter (Daniella Kimber), whose purpose is something of a mystery, until we discover what is running loose on the sub and why the very fertile Ellie Winter is part of the search and rescue crew.

Stinger is a wild, claustrophobic romp, with director Martin Munthe using the alluring Daniella Kimber in ways that no sci-fi film has seen a woman of such beauty being used before.   And that alone (sorry, no details) is reason enough to circle Sept. 14 on your viewing calendar … Stinger on DVD!!

 

 

 

 

 

 

Breaking ... Paramount Home Entertainment Has Selected July 27 As The Street Date For Writer/Director/Producer John Krasinski's A Quiet Place Part II

With a very short solicitation window, Paramount Home Entertainment has tabbed July 27 as the street date for writer/director/producer John Krasinski’s A Quiet Place: Part II.

The ARR is a very-quick-to-market 60 days and box office receipts currently stand at a stellar $150.7 million.

Planned for release are Combo Pack editions for the 4K Ultra HD (with Blu-ray) and Blu-ray (with DVD) formats, plus a stand-alone DVD SKU.

Bonus goodies include the “Director’s Diary: Filming with John Krasinski,” plus four featurettes — “Pulling Back the Curtain,” “Regan’s Journey,” “Surviving the Marina” and “Detectable Disturbance: Visual Effects and Sound Design.”

 

 

 

Paramount Home Entertainment Tabs Sept 07 For 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack Launch Of Star Trek: The Original 4-Movie Collection

Paramount Home Entertainment will be releasing the first theatrical films in the Star Trek series as a 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack presentation titled Star Trek: The Original 4-Movie Collection on Sept. 7.

Included in the collection are director Robert Wise’s 1979 Christmas-season launch of the future film franchise, Star Trek: The Motion Picture, starring the original series cast members, William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, George Takei, Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nicoles, Grace Lee Whitney and Majel Barrett, with newcomers Persis Khambatta, Stephen Collins and Mark Lenard (who would have the distinction of being cast as a Romulan in the “Balance of Terror” episode of the original Star Trek television series, as Sarek, a Vulcan, in “Journey to Babel,” and in Star Trek: The Motion Picture he plays a Klingon … quite a combination).

Bonus features include commentary, deleted scenes and a collection vintage featurettes.

Next in the series was director Nicholas Meyer’s summer of 1982 release of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, starring Kirk and company, plus Kirstie Alley as Saavik, Bibi Besch (Meteor, The Beast Within) as the mother of Kirk’s son, David, (played by Merritt Butrick) and Ricardo Montalban reprises his iconic role, Khan, from the television series (“Space Seed” episode) and secures his place in the Star Trek universe of great villains.

There is a vintage commentary (with Nicholas Meyer), plus numerous vintage featurettes.

The third arrival in the Star Trek film franchise series came in 1984 with Leonard Nimoy as the director of Star Trek III: The Search for Spock.  

There are two vintage commentary options included here.  The first features Leonard Nimoy, who is joined by writer/producer Harve Bennett, director of photography Charles Correll and Robin Curtis, who took over the role of Saavik.  The second teams Star Trek: The Next Generation producer Ronald D. Moore with Star Trek: Voyager episode writer Michael Taylor … plus there are vintage featurettes.

And finishing up this 4K Ultra HD collection is director Leonard Nimoy’s 1986 release of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.   No Enterprise, instead a captured Klingon Bird of Prey — renamed “The Bounty” — and a time trip to save the planet.  

Catherine Hicks (Child’s Play, Fever Pitch, Peggy Sue Got Married) is the focus here as Dr. Gillian Taylor, a marine biologist with whales that Kirk and Spock need to take back to the future.

Bonus features include commentary from William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy, plus vintage featurettes.

Also announced this past week from Paramount Home Entertainment is a 20-disc Blu-ray SteelBook collection of Star Trek: The Original Series, which will also be available on Sept. 7.

 

 

 

Director Michael Chaves' The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It Arrives On Aug. 24 From Warner Bros. Home Entertainment

If you are keeping track, this would be number eight in the series.   First there was director James Wan’s The Conjuring, which arrived in theatres during the summer of 2013.

This was followed by Annabelle (2014), The Conjuring 2 (2016), Annabelle: Creation (2017), The Nun (2018), The Curse of La Llorona (2019), Annabelle Comes Home (also 2019), and with the release announcement this past week from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment, fans of the series can look to Aug. 24 as the street date for a three-SKU helping of director Michael Chaves’ The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It.

The ARR comes in at 81 days and box office receipts currently stand at $62.5 million.

Planned for release are a 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack edition, plus stand-alone Blu-ray and DVD SKUs.

Bonus features common to all three editions of The Conjuring 3: The Devil Made Me Do It is the featurette titled “By Reason of Demonic Possession.”  Exclusive to the 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray product offerings are two additional featurettes — “The Occultist,” “Exorcism of Fear” — and a video comic presentation titled “DC Horror Presents The Conjuring: The Lover #1.”

 

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Looks To Aug. 03 For The Release Of Blu-ray And DVD Editions Of Billy Crystal's Here Today

Covid-Cinema continues to have its own set of casualty statistics.   Films that should do well theatrically, but struggle.  

Such is this case with Billy Crystal’s Here Today — he co-wrote, directed and stars in — which opened theatrically in 1,200 theatres in early May (before “restrictions” were fully lifted in California) and only managed to pull in $2.8 million in box office revenues.

It is over, it’s done, there is nothing that can be done about what happened.   This delightful comedy, co-starring Tiffany Haddish, should have done better.  You just move on, and that’s exactly what Sony Pictures Home Entertainment did this past week with an Aug. 3 date for both DVD and Blu-ray editions.

For the record, the ARR comes in at 88 days.

Bonus features include commentary with Billy Crystal, Tiffany Haddish and co-writer Alan Zweibel (long-time Billy Crystal collaborator … multiple Emmy-wins for his writing) and video sessions with members of the cast and crew.
