My Stepmother IS An Alien On Blu-ray From Arrow Video On Dec. 14

Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has prepared a new 2K film restoration (from the original camera negative) of actor-turned-filmmaker Richard Benjamin’s 1988 “sci-fi” comedy, My Stepmother is an Alien, starring Dan Aykroyd and Kim Basinger, for release on Blu-ray this coming Dec. 14.

It was a long and winding road getting My Stepmother is an Alien into production.   The process began in the early 80s when screenwriter Jerico Stone arrived in Hollywood and began pitching an idea about an alien encounter, but over time it mutated into a comedy about aliens with actresses ranging from Raquel Welch to Bette Midler to Julie Andrews all being ballyhooed as being attached to the film.  

It then went into what they call “turn-around” and the original studio, Paramount, dropped it and 20^th Century-Fox optioned it through Jerry Weintraub’s production company.   Suddenly Joan Rivers is the trades as being a possible candidate.   Ditto for Cybill Shepherd.   It was all just noise.

It wasn’t until Richard Benjamin came onboard as the director that the film finally moved forward with Shelly Long in the lead.   She didn’t last long as the age-old “creative differences” issue bubbled up and suddenly Kim Basinger is the lead actress.  Also, on the acting front, Juliette Lewis made her film debut with My Stepmother is an Alien.

The film became a big deal with a solid budget and a “Presidential” preview in Washington D.C. prior to its opening in December of 1988.  

As to the story itself, at the Haddonkirk Research Laboratory they do the same thing over and over again hoping to hear from the pair of “dwarf” galaxies called the Megellanic Clouds that appear to “orbit” the Milky Way.   Dr. Steven Mills (Dan Akyroyd) has high hopes that someday they will make contact, but the head of the project, Dr. Budlong (Joseph Maher) has his doubts.

On this particular night, it is pouring down rain, and Mills wants to make one last tweak to the array before heading out for “date night” — he has been a widow for the past five years, raising his 13-year-old daughter, Jessie (Alyson Hannigan — as Michelle in the American Pie films, as Lily in the How I Met Your Mother sitcom, plus such films as Dead Man on Campus, Date Movie, etc.).

One thing leads to another and a monster signal is sent dozens of light years away to the planet Cosine N to the 8^th, affecting its gravity … the lab is destroyed and Mills is fired!

What he doesn’t know is that the planet has dispatched a space ship with an alien crew and their database about earth is just a little off.   Their leader, Celeste (Kim Basinger), transforms into a human and seeks out Mills to send up another beam to undo the damage.

Chaos and calamity follow as Celeste, with her “assistant” Bag (voiced by Ann Prentiss), who takes the form of a magical purse, but is actually a one-eyed snake (in more ways than one), try to convince Mills to undo the damage.   Their only point of reference for understanding the culture of the planet is what they’ve learned from television sitcoms.

Bonus features include a newly-prepared commentary from film critic Bryan Reesman and newly-minted featurette titled “Cosmetic Encounters: Directing My Stepmother is An Alien.”

 

 

 

Paramount Home Entertainment Celebrates 50th Anniversary Of Harold And Maude On Dec. 07 With "Paramount Presents" Blu-ray Edition

Is it a black comedy?   Or, perhaps, a tragic love story?   A satire?   A concert film, loaded with classic tunes from Cat Stevens?  

All of the above?   Film fans, critics and arthouse venues have praised it over the years and can see in it so very much, yes, black comedy, satire, love story … and more.

Paramount Home Entertainment announced this past week that the newest addition to its “Paramount Presents” promotional line of Blu-ray products will be none other than a 50^th Anniversary Edition of director Hal Ashby’s Harold and Maude.

A new 4K film restoration from the original camera negative will be released on Dec. 7.

Harold (Bud Cort — Brewster McCloud, M*A*S*H, etc.) is, on the surface, a spoiled rich kid with only two interests.   These are, staging mock suicides for the benefit of his mother (an inspired performance by Vivian Pickles — Sunday Bloody Sunday, Elizabeth R) and attending random funerals.  

We learn the reason for his suicide fetish as the story unfolds, but it is his attendance at the funerals of complete strangers that moves the story forward.   He is so invested in the funeral settings that he purchases a junked hearse, and being rich — with plenty of time on his hands — restores it to pristine condition.   He begins to notice an old woman at many of the same burials and memorial services.

Her name is Maude and she is played by Ruth Gordon, who was nominated for Oscars on five separate occasions, but not all for acting.   During the early 50s, she began writing scripts with her husband, Garson Kanin, and the pair ended with Oscar nominations for A Double Life, Adam’s Rib and Pat and Mike … on the acting side, she was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in 1965 for Inside Daisy Clover and won the Oscar for her performance in Polanski’s Rosemary’s Baby in 1968.

Maude has no way to attend these gatherings unless she “borrows” a car, truck, motorcycle, you name it, whatever is handy.   And so, the pair are finally introduced when she “borrows” Harold’s hearse … they become good friends, go on many adventures and he falls in love.

Meanwhile, his mother — in a running gag — is always setting up Harold with “dates,” young women who have absolutely nothing in common with her son.  

The third act of Harold and Maude is bittersweet as Harold has blissfully ignored all of Maude’s end-of-life banter.  

Bonus features include commentary from filmmakers Larry Karaszewski and Cameron Crowe, plus the newly-prepared featurette titled “Yusuf/Cat Stevens on Harold and Maude.”

 

 

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Tabs Nov. 02 As The Street Date For The 4K Ultra HD Collection Titled Max Max Anthology

He didn’t realize it at the time, but first-time Aussie director George Miller was making an arthouse film.   With co-writer Byron Kennedy they set out to make a micro-budget film with a dystopian rogue biker theme, but ended up with a film franchise and the birth of a major star.   Who would have guessed!

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment announced this past week that a 4K Ultra HD collection titled, The Mad Max Anthology, will be heading home as a four-film/four-disc collection on Nov. 2.

The original Mad Max was released Downunder in 1979 and arrived as aa pick up by American International Pictures, which promptly redubbed the Australian language track into a more understandable American-English version.  

That’s probably some sort of trivia question … how many Aussie films have been dubbed from Aussie-English to American-English!!

Released domestically in 1980, the film was imagined as a biker action flick, but it quickly found a following as an arthouse entry and a repertory mainstay.   Surprise!!

The title character was played by newbie Mel Gibson, who caught the eye of fellow Aussie filmmaker Peter Weir and was given the lead in Gallipoli.

A biker film becomes an arthouse favorite and it spawns a sequel in 1981, which would become one of the greatest sci-fi action films ever made, The Road Warrior.   Mel Gibson was now a star.

The sequel was superior in every way to the original.   What a ride.  What a film.  Great story, great cast … incredible action.   Instant classic.

And then came the great misstep, the next installment in the series, Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome.   Released in 1985, it was a franchise killer.  Besides, Mel Gibson was now a box office star and ready to move on.

Thirty years would pass and filmmaker George Miller would redeem the series with the 2015 film release of Mad Max: Fury Road, with the inspired casting of Charlize Theron, who is teamed with Tom Hardy as the new Max.   A blockbuster.

Mad Max and Mad Max: Fury Road have been previously released on the 4K Ultra HD format as stand-alone product offerings.   This will be the first time that all four films in the series will be together as a 4K Ultra HD collection.

The Road Warrior and Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome will also be released on Nov. 2 as stand-alone 4K Ultra HD editions.

In other release news from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment this past week, the October new-to-Blu-ray film library release calendar was also announced and it has some real jewels in the mix.

Oct. 12 is the street date for the Blu-ray double-feature titled Val Lewton Double Feature, which includes director Mark Robson’s 1943 film release of The Ghost Ship (Lewton producing).   Tom Merriam (Russell Wade) is the new the third officer on the Altair, but before he can even report to the captain he is warned by a dock-side beggar that it is a cursed ship.

Paying no mind to the warning, he reports to Capt. Stone (Richard Dix) and before long realizes that the shipper is quite mad, and thinks nothing of murdering members of his own crew if they displease him.   Will the beggar’s warning come true for Tom?

Teamed with The Ghost Ship is the 1946 Boris Karloff horror film, Bedlam, with Robson once again the director and Lewton the producer.   Set in London during 1761, we are introduced to Lord Mortimer (Billy House), who arrives at the notorious insane asylum with his lover, actress Nell Bowen (Anna Lee), to inquire about the mysterious death of his friend.  

They meet the “warden” of Bedlam, George Sims (Karloff), who is a cruel and sadistic man.   He assures them that it was an accident.    Soon, Nell has a falling out with Lord Moritmer and he hits upon a unique solution to her torments … commit her to Bedlam as being insane and let Sims give her his special “cure!” 

Also making its Blu-ray debut on Oct. 19 is director Karl Freund’s 1935 horror film, Mad Love, starring Peter Lorre, which was his American film debut.

Rounding out the October new-to-Blu-ray selections are director George Cukor’s 1933 film release of Dinner at Eight (a new 4K scan); Children of the Damned (with commentary by screenwriter John Briley); Deborah Kerr and David Niven star in Eye of the Devil, and Kay Francis teams with Lyle Talbot in the 1933 film titled Mary Stevens, M.D. … all four street on Oct. 26.
