Icarus Films Selects Sept. 06 For The Domestic DVD Debut Of Writer/Director Mohamed Diab's Amira

Nothing like a little controversary to set people off!   That’s what Egyptian filmmaker Mohamed Diab accomplished with his film, Amira, which will be available on DVD in the domestic marketplace on Sept. 06 through the joint efforts of France’s premiere film production and distribution company, Distrib Films, and Icarus Films.

Before we get to the nuts and bolts of the film’s content, and why it has stirred such passions, let’s first look at its distribution history.  

Writer/director Mohamed Diab is probably best known to domestic audiences for his lead direction on the Marvel mini-series, Moon Knight, a supernatural tale involving Egyptian mythology.   While that is a nice calling card, it is his film festival wins as both a writer and director that has garnered him international attention (Cairo 678, Clash, etc.).

With this in mind, Amira opened at the Venice Film Festival in September of last year and proceeded to work the film festival circuit through May of this year.   Along the way, it captured a number of directing, acting and film awards, and was even placed in the running for Best Foreign Language Oscar consideration.

Then the controversary started, critics and web sites were flooded with countless negative trolls and their comments.   Oscar consideration was withdrawn as result of the negative “backlash” against the film.

The story centers around the title character, Amira (Tara Abboud in her film debut), who is the daughter of a Palestinian “terrorist” by the name of Nuwar (Ali Suliman — 200 Meters, The Last Friday, The Attack), who is serving a life sentence in Israel’s Megiddo Prison.   It seems that he froze his sperm and had it smuggled out … Amira is something of a miracle baby.

Amira is bright, has a talent for photography and idolizes her father.   And then her world is turned upside down.   A real gut-punch, when her mother, Warda (Saba Mubarak — Daughters of Abdul-Rahman), who wants to get pregnant again and discovers that Nuwar is, and always has been, infertile. 

To compound the problem, Warda is now considered “unfaithful” and put under something of a house-arrest while the family decides what her fate will be.   But as for Amria, she’s been cut adrift with so many unanswered questions … her “identity” has been shattered!   Where is the empathy for her?

Icarus Films will be providing the opportunity to see writer/director Mohamed Diab’s Amira on DVD this coming Sept. 6.   Place it on your calendar, the film works as both a personal drama and a statement on the politics of the ongoing Palestinian/Israeli conflict.   Amira is presented in Arabic (with Hebrew) and with English subtitles.

 

 

 

MVD Entertainment Group Bestows Blu-Ray "Rewind Collection" Status On Director David Nutter's Disturbing Behavior On Oct. 11

MVD Entertainment Group announced this past week that the newest inductee into the “Rewind Collection” library of Blu-ray releases will be director David Nutter’s cult horror tale, Disturbing Behavior.    The release date will be Oct. 11.

Nothing like being the new kid in town.  Trying to fit in, avoid the bad element and stay out the line of fire of the social cliques … you know, “the mean girls,” “the jocks” and “the stoners.”   High school is hell!

Steve Clark (James Marsden — X-Men, Zoolander, The Notebook, Straw Dogs … as Teddy Flood in the Westworld series) is the new kid to Cradle Bay, who quickly befriends the “outcasts,” a group of social misfits, who include Rachel (Katie Holmes — Teaching Mrs. Tingle, Pieces of April, Batman Begins), Gavin (Nick Stahl — The Thin Red Line, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, Burning Palms) and “U.V.” (Chad Donella — Final Destination, Hate Crime).   Perhaps a bad choice … we shall see.

Meanwhile, since Steve is dealing with the loss of his brother (a suicide), the in-school psychologist, Dr. Caldicott (Bruce Greenwood — Wild Orchid, Passenger 57, Double Jeopardy, Thirteen Days, Capote, Star Trek), is sympathetic to his needs and current state of mind and suggests that he might consider joining the “Blue Ribbons,” a school social club that helps others by setting good examples.  

There is your set-up, new kid, outcasts and well-meaning do-gooders who have the support of school officials, sounds like a pretty nice place, what could possibly go wrong?

The answer, of course, is plenty!   Gavin keeps telling Steve that the Blue Ribbons are evil, programmed to be Stepford-like robots — like the “Pod People” in director Don Siegel’s 1956 sci-fi chiller, Invasion of the Body Snatchers.  A series of events confirms this, including Gavin’s abduction and conversion into a Blue Ribbon.

The race is on, can U.V., Rachel and Steve avoid the same fate as Gavin … or is it hopeless!

Bonus goodies include commentary from director David Nutter (Trancers 4: Jack of Swords, Trancers 5: Sudden Deth … Emmy-winner for both Game of Thrones and Band of Brothers), deleted scenes and alternate ending (with commentary by Nutter).

 

 

 

Writer/Director Derek Hammer's Woman In The Chair Arrives On Blu-ray On Aug. 30 From Bayview Entertainment

In the winter of 2019, writer/director Derek Hammer began production on his “J-Horror” film in Japan.   His script for the film had won “Best Horror Screenplay” at the L.A. Horror and Crime Film Fest in April of 2019.

Backers were found for the funding of his film.   Hammer then spent the fall of 2019 in Japan scouting locations, pre-production planning and a cast was recruited.  The Covid-panic had not yet hit and Hammer was able to wrap filming before Japan went into lock-down. 

Titled Woman in the Chair, the buzz was quickly out there that an American filmmaker had delivered a tasty “J-Horror” film, but now the pandemic was full on, festivals shutdown, theatres did so as well and that was it for Hammer’s film.   Two years and nothing.

In January, genre fans and several web sites, began reporting that it was back in the hunt.   And then word arrived this past week that Bayview Entertainment will be debuting Woman in the Chair on Blu-ray this coming Aug. 30.   The wait, the long road to distribution, is finally over!

Maurice (Hagen Van Holland) is an American living in Japan, who enjoys “discovering” the out-of-the-way Japanese villages, well away from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo.   On one of these explorations, he finds an old abandon house and observes a woman just sitting motionless in a chair.  Thinking she might be dead Maurice notices that she never moves; a vision of a woman ethereal in nature.

For hours he observes her, films her and then becomes convince that she is in fact a ghost stuck in time and in this particular place.   So, what does Maurice do?  

This is a traditional J-Horror film and you can bet that Maurice’s plan to fashion a viewing area for tourists to see his ghostly discovery, while having merits as a sound financial investment, can only lead to some rather nasty consequences.   Ask yourself the question, “what can possibly go wrong?”

The jolts and paranormal abound on Aug. 30 with the Blu-ray debut of the Woman in the Chair … from Bayview Entertainment.

 

 

 

 

Cleopatra Entertainment Selects Oct. 11 For The DVD And Blu-ray Release Of Director Brandon Slagle's Survival Thriller Frost

Cleopatra Entertainment, with sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has snagged director Brandon Slagle’s edge-of-your-seat thriller, Frost, for domestic DVD and Blu-ray distribution on Oct. 11.

Every now and then you get — as an audience member — a chance to talk to the screen.   “Do that!”  “No, no, don’t do that!”  “I can’t believe she isn’t trying that.”  Remember director Adam Green’s Frozen back in 2010 with the three college students stuck in the ski lift, alone, stranded, cold … death awaits unless they can figure out how to get out of their life-and-death predicament.   Frost is that kind of movie.

The only way it works is if you are invested in the character.   If you don’t care, it’s a 15-minute movie and you are on to something else.  

Frost works because of the incredible performance of Devanny Pinn as Abby.  She carries the film, she’s the one in peril and without her acting chops the film falls apart.  

Indeed, we know Devanny Pinn as a Scream Queen, with numerous performances that have pleased genre fans … Crossbreed, Death Hotel, The Devil’s Nightmare, to name just a few, and as Susan Atkins in Slagle’s 2014 film release of House of Manson.

Here, she plays against type.   She has arrived at her father’s place (played by Vernon Wells — The Road Warrior), who lives up in the mountains, to patch things up.  She’s pregnant and he’s about to be a grandfather.   It’s a good ice-breaker, he’s excited and suggests that they spend the afternoon fishing and relaxing at a nearby lake (filmed on location in the San Bernandino mountains) … and so off they go.

That’s the set-up, pregnant daughter, rugged, loner father on a quick drive up to a remote lake.   Everything goes south, otherwise you would have a Hallmark movie, as they go careening down the side of the mountain.   Abby is pinned in the wreckage and dear old dad knows that this is now life or death.   At this point you are already talking to the screen … “do this … do that,” you know the drill.  

Weather is coming in and her father knows that the only chance is for him to hike out and find help, sorry Abby, you are on your own, hurt, pinned in the wreckage of the car, exposed to the elements, and, oops, was that a contraction?

Frost is a survival film at its very best.   We won’t give anything more away.  Just know that Devanny Pinn (who was also the producer) makes you care, and therefore you are infested in the outcome.

The Blu-ray edition includes a CD of the soundtrack … Oct. 11 from Cleopatra Entertainment.

 

 

 

 

The Criterion Collection Tabs Oct. 04 For A 4K Ultra HD Edition Of Director George A. Romero's Night Of The Living Dead

The Criterion Collection made a stunning October announcement for the next 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack addition to its home entertainment packaged media library this past week.   Drum roll please … the film restoration will be none other than director George A. Romero’s 1968 horror masterpiece, Night of the Living Dead.

Streeting on Oct. 4, the 4K restoration features two companion Blu-ray discs packed with bonus goodies.

Filmed on a limited budget just outside of Pittsburgh (Evans City, Pennsylvania to be more precise), Night of the Living Dead was panned by the critics of the day as been too violent, too horrific, too disgusting, even “sadistic” … excuse me, those are all positives for a film that arguably gave audiences of the day their money’s worth in terms of frights, jolts and the heebie-jeebies.   Like a rollercoaster ride, let’s do that again!!

Bonus goodies include Night of Anubis, the “work-print” edition of the film, two vintage commentary options, archival video sessions with actors Duane Jones and Judith Ridley and filmmaker George A. Romero, an additional video session with sound engineer Gary Streiner and producer Russell Streiner.

There are also two untitled featurettes — one with filmmakers Frank Darabont, Guillermo del Toro, and Robert Rodriguez and the other with co-writer John A. Russo  

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Announces 4K Ultra HD Edition Of Writer/Director Tom Holland's Fright Night To Be Available On Oct. 04

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has the perfect Halloween promotional season release lined-up for its debut as a 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack presentation on Oct. 4.   This new 4K candidate is writer/director Tom Holland’s 1988 horror treat, Fright Night.

When you have a vampire (played by Chris Saradon) living (is “living” the proper word?) next door, and no one believes you … you have to take desperate measures.   That’s exactly what teen Charley Brewster (William Ragsdale) does when he turns to late-night TV host, Peter Vincent (Roddy McDowall), to save himself and his girlfriend (Amanda Bearse) from this neighborly neck-biter.

Great fun … with cool extras.   Two commentary options, one with filmmaker Tom Holland and actors Chris Sarandon and Jonathan Stark (moderated by Tim Sullivan) and the second featuring Holland, actors William Ragsdale and Stephen Geoffreys and F/X whiz Randall Cook (moderation by Jeremy Smith).
