eBay sellers of vintage
VHS editions of director Russell Solberg’s 1996 direct-to-video release of Raven,
starring the late Burt Reynolds, are fuming right about now for what MVD
Entertainment Group just did. In one
brilliant move — in celebration of the film career of Burt Reynolds — the
market for these hard to come by copies of Raven has all but vanished!
Why you ask? Well, word arrived this past that MVD has
bestowed Marquee Collection status on this all-action revenge thriller, which
will be released as both DVD and Blu-ray editions on Dec. 11.
Prior to the announcement,
you could snatch-up a VHS edition for a cool fifty bucks (since reduced in
price dramatically following the news) … or you can wait until Dec. 11 and
place your order for a newly-restored Blu-ray edition at less than half that
price (more with discounts at retail).
Wow, that’s a tough choice!!!
Between Burt Reynolds
teaming with Demi Moore in writer/director Andrew Berman’s 1996 film adaptation
of the Carl Hiaasen novel, Strip Tease and his Oscar-nominated
performance as Jack Horner (for Best Supporting Actor) in writer/director Paul
Thomas Anderson’s 1997 theatrical hit, Boogie Nights (with Heather Graham, Mark
Wahlberg, William H. Macy, Don Cheadle and Julianne Moore), Reynolds kept busy
with several projects, including director Russell Solberg’s Raven.
If only Stu Segall, the
producer of the film, had a little bit of patience (his Renegade TV series,
starring Lorenzo Lamas and Branscombe Richmond was in its sixth season on the USA
Network), he could have taken Raven out theatrically, but instead he
did a VHS distribution (just months before the launch of the game-changing DVD
format) and that was that.
Over the years
cult-status for this tale of a freelance mercenary by the name of Jerome
“Raven” Katz (Reynolds) being betrayed on secret mission to Bosnia — and his
revenge that follows — has gained cult status.
MVD Entertainment Group’s “Marquee Collection” line of Blu-ray products
is the perfect fit!
