Last week we reported that VCI Entertainment had
selected May 28 for the release of the 2K film restoration of director Ray
Taylor’s 1935 Universal Pictures serial, The
Roaring West, starring Western screen legend
Buck Jones.
If that was welcome news for fans of the venerable
theatrical serial format, then things just got a whole better with the
announcement this week that Buck Jones will be riding the range as disgraced
sheriff “Red” Davidson in director Lew Landers’ 1934 15-chapter Universal
Pictures serial, The Red Rider, on May
28.
This new 2K restoration (from the original 35mm fine
grain film masters) features the Western screen icon Buck Jones as the sheriff
of Sun Dog, who lets his pal, “Silent” Slate (Grant Withers), escape his jail —
and the hangman’s noose — and then resigns in disgrace so that he can go after
the real killers. 15 chapters of narrow
escapes and cliffhanging thrills follow, with the villain revealed in the
serial’s edge-of-your-seat wrap-up.
Fans have long complained that bootlegged copies of
poor quality have been the only viewing option for this top-notch Universal
Serial … that all changes on May 28!!!
