It is the same old story. On Thursday, July 25, Target said Sept 3,
Best Buy confirmed the same street day of Sept. 3 (both have their own “special
editions”) and Amazon gleefully began accepting orders for a Sept. 3 delivery
of product to their customers as well, but Sony Pictures Home Entertainment was
mum’s the word.
It was until Monday, July 29, just after noon, that
a formal press release was circulated, but with such a competitive marketplace,
these three retailers simply ignore such formalities and try to grab as many
pre-orders as possible.
Sony Pictures Home Entertainment gets blindsided
once again. What can you say? Sept. 3 will be the street date for a
three-SKU helping of director F. Gary Gray’s Men in
Black: International.
The ARR is a quick-to-market 81 days and domestic
box office receipts were $78.8 million (a reported production budget of $100
million — and that’s before P&A costs — means that it will be up to
international theatrical venues and home entertainment to mop up the red ink). With that said, consumers pay little
attention to such things … domestic packaged media activity should be solid.
Planned for release are Combo Pack editions for both
the 4K Ultra HD (with Blu-ray) and Blu-ray (with DVD) formats, plus there will
be a stand-alone DVD edition.
As to bonus goodies, common to all release
configurations will be a gag reel and a whopping eight featurettes — “New
Recruits, Classic Suits,” “Let's Do This! Inside the Action & Stunts,” “Look
Right Here: Gadgets, Weapons, & Rides,” “Expanding the Universe of MIB,” “Frank
& Pawny's Peanut Gallery,” “Les Twins Leave It on the Floor,” “In Case
You've Been Neuralyzed: MIB Recap”and “The MIB Meet the NBA.”
Exclusive to the 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray SKUs are
deleted scenes and two additional featurettes — “Alien-cestry.com” and “Neuralyzer:
Like It Never Even Happened.”
In other release news from Sony Pictures Home
Entertainment, Aug. 20 will be the street date (and Sony confirms that) for
director David Yarovesky’s twisted take on the “Superman-comes-to-Earth” fable,
Brightburn.
The ARR is 88 days and box office revenues were a
bust at just $17.3 million.
The release configuration is the same three-SKU presentation
as Men in Black: International.
Bonus features include commentary from director David
Yarovesky (The Hive),
who is joined by cinematographer Michael Dallatorre and costume designer Autumn
Steed (they both previously worked with Yarovesky on The Hive),
plus there are two featurettes — “Hero-Horror!” and “Nature vs. Nurture” —
and a trio of “vignettes” hosted by actress Elizabeth Banks, producer James
Gunn and director David Yarovesky.
