Sony Pictures Home Entertainment announced this past week that the 35th Anniversary of writer/director Jim Henson’s Labyrinth, starring David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly, will be celebrated on Aug. 17 with the debut of a 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack edition.
Bonus goodies include newly unearth screen tests for the role of Sarah, which included Molly Ringwald (Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club were under her belt that this time … she ended up doing Pretty in Pink), Trini Alvarado (who had done well in Rich Kids and Mrs. Soffel), Tracey Gold, Claudia Wells (as Jennifer in Back to the Future), Jill Schoelen, Maddie Corman and Danielle von Zerneck among those who tested for the part. There are also roughly 25 minutes-worth of deleted scenes with commentary from Brian Henson.
There are also vintage materials included with this mid-August home entertainment celebration These include commentary by conceptual designer Brian Froud, a Labyrinth anniversary Q&A session, a pair of featurettes — “The Henson Legacy” and “Remembering the Goblin King” — and a trio of documentaries — documentary filmmaker Des Saunders’ Inside the Labyrinth, plus the 2011 documentaries titled Journey Through the Labyrinth: Kingdom of Characters and Journey Through the Labyrinth: The Quest for Goblin City.
