Blue Underground, with sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has a new 4K film restoration (from the 35mm camera negative) of director Bill Lustig’s 1997 highly-underrated horror gem, Uncle Sam, ready for delivery as a 4K Ultra HD product offering on June 21.

This one was always a mystery.   First, you’ve got Bill Lustig directing, who scored with Maniac, the Maniac Cop series and Vigilante.   Next, the screenplay is by legendary filmmaker Larry Cohen, who achieved genre cult status — an genuine auteur — with the likes of It’s Alive (a trilogy), Q, The Stuff, plus his blaxploitation entries, Black Caesar and Hell Up in Harlem.   That’s a winning combination!!

And then look at the cast!!   Isaac Hayes, Timothy Bottoms, Bo Hopkins, William Smith, Robert Forster and the wonderful P.J. Soles (Carrie, Halloween, Rock 'n' Roll High School).   Plus, there is veteran stunt man David 'Shark' Fralick as the title character.

Excellent filmmakers, great cast, always a mystery why this horror classic didn’t get a theatrical break.   One of those great mysteries of life.

The 4K Ultra HD edition of Uncle Sam from Blue Underground comes loaded with bonus goodies.

We begin with two commentary options, one featuring Bill Lustig, the late Larry Cohen and producer George G. Braunstein, while the second teams Lustig with Isaac Hayes.   There are also deleted scenes, a gag reel, an extensive still and poster gallery and stunt coordinator Spiro Razatos provides commentary on the various fire stunts in the film.
