VCI Entertainment, working with the Mary Pickford Foundation, has the latest 4K film restoration of the iconic silent film star, Mary Pickford ready for delivery as a Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack on July 11.
This would be director William Desmond Taylor’s 1918 film release of Johanna Enlists, teaming Pickford with Monte Blue, Emory Johnson and Douglas MacLean.
Poor, poor Johanna Renssaller (Pickford), she is an attractive young woman living on a remote farm and her luck with finding a suitable husband is already at strike two — the hired hand and the railroad man didn’t quite work out. She appears to be doomed to live out her life as a lonely spinster working from before dawn until after dark … indeed, poor, poor Johanna.
But World War I — the war to end all wars — needs men at the front in Europe, so train new recruits they must. And guess where the troops are going to be trained!
Heaven on earth, all those handsome men and only Johanna to be admired for weeks on end. Who will it be? Private Vibbard (Monte Blue — one of his early films … he would end up with nearly 300 film credits spanning nearly 50 years as an actor), the young Lt. Frank Le Roy (Emory Johnson) or the dashing Captain Archie van Renssaller (Douglas MacLean)? So many choices and so little time!!
