Disney Goes With A Post-Labor Day Home Entertainment Release Window For The Little Mermaid With A Sept. 19 Street Date

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has selected Sept. 19 as the street date for director Rob Marshall’s live-action version of The Little Mermaid, starring Halle Bailey as Ariel and Melissa McCarthy as Ursula.

The ARR works out to 116 days (the period from theatrical opening to the subsequent arrival in the home entertainment package media arena) and domestic box office results currently stand at $283.8 million.

Planned for release are Combo Pack editions for both the 4K Ultra HD (with Blu-ray) and Blu-ray (with DVD) formats, plus a stand-alone DVD edition.

A digital window opens up on July 25, which seems counter-productive when it comes to packaged media product offerings.   Of note, several “helper” sources have been taking “pre-orders” for a July 18 delivery … they were off in their estimates by a week and will quickly make adjustments.

Even with that, they will have a window of nearly two months to move Blu-ray copies (and possibly “4K” editions) to an unsuspecting public before legitimate retail outlets have a crack at selling copies of The Little Mermaid.

As to bonus features, there is a “sing-a-long” viewing option, a blooper reel, a five-part making-of documentary titled “Hotter Under the Water” (segments include: “A Tale of the Bottomless Blue,” “I Know Something’s Starting Right Now,” “Down Where It’s Wetter,” “Explore that Shore Up Above” and “Do What the Music Say”) and a pair of featurettes — “The Scuttlebutt on Sidekicks” and “Passing the Dinglehopper.”

There is also the “Song Breakdowns” feature, showing how four musical numbers were produced — “Wild Uncharted Waters,” “Under the Sea,” “Kiss the Girl” and “Poor Unfortunate Souls.”
