Writer/director Johnny Remo absolutely nails it with his crossover tale, God’s Country Song, starring Justin Gaston … part family film (a faith-based entry to be sure) and part heartfelt drama about failing, failing again, standing up and doing the right thing.
Mill Creek Entertainment will be teaming up with Pure Flix on Sept. 19 to guide God’s Country Song to the DVD marketplace. Be sure to circle that date on your calendar … you will not be disappointed.
Life is complicated, made all the more so by a deeply flawed Noah Bryan (Justin Gaston, real life recording artist and actor — Santa Bootcamp, Until We Meet Again, Night Into Day, etc.), who has a history of drinking, playing around and to make it a perfect trifecta, he has also managed to alienate himself from his family, especially his father (John Laughlin).
Noah does have two things going for himself. He’s one hell of a singer, with a bright future, and a manager, Larry Walker (Christopher Michael — perhaps best known as Sgt. Michaels in the 7th Heaven TV series), who believes in him and tells him straight-up that the only one that can blow it is Noah Bryan.
About now you are thinking, Pure Flix, “faith-based,” country music … why would anyone outside of this circle want to check God’s Country Song out? Filmmaker Johnny Remo (Saved by Grace, Like a Country Song, Cutback) gets that and really puts in the effort to make this film a genuine crossover with more than a couple twists and turns.
The hard work for Noah finally pays off — all those one-night stands; one town, one venue to the next — with an offer to open on a road tour for country music sensation Colt Young (played by Coffey Anderson), a long-time friend of Walker.
We are going to hold back on the big spoiler(s), because that’s where the heart and soul of this indie film really registers. We will tell you this much, Noah does what Noah does best, he screws up and blows up his career-making opportunity. You expect that … that’s foreshadowed.
What you don’t expect comes in the form of a young boy (played by JJ Miller), a kind and loving young woman, Leeann (Justene Alpert — The Matchmaker’s Playbook … as Marissa in the Bosch television series), who is not exactly Noah’s type, and a wholly unexpected path back to family … of note, Noah’s mother is played by Mariel Hemingway.
If you want a feel-good movie — even if country music, “faith-based” and films in the Pure Flix realm (yes, God’s Country Song is Dove Family-approved) are not your cup of tea, then this might be the one this summer that will change your mind!!
Be sure to check out God’s Country Song on Sept. 19 on DVD from Mill Creek Entertainment.
