Mill Creek Entertainment Tabs Oct. 17 For The Blu-ray Release Of Double Danger Teaming Drop Squad With Waist Deep

Mill Creek Entertainment has a priced-to-collect Blu-ray double feature heading home on Oct. 17.

Titled Double Danger, action fans can begin their viewing enjoyment with director David C. Johnson’s 1994 mixed-genre film release of Drop Squad.  Produced by auteur filmmaker Spike Lee, the film is part social message mixed with ever-increasing physical violence.

Certain elements of the black community have had it.  The exploitation, the lack of respect, the crime, broken families, the drugs … it’s a long list that points squarely at blacks preying on blacks and they have had enough.   A breaking point.

Rocky (played by Vondie Curtis-Hall — Die Hard 2, The Mambo Kings, Falling Down, Sugar Hill, etc.) and some of his like-minded friends have formed the D.R.O.P. Squad, which is an acronym for Deprogramming and Restoration of Pride, and their first target is Bruford Jamison, Jr. (Eriq La Salle — best known as Peter Benson in the ER TV series — three-time Emmy nominee), who is a high-powered advertising executive.   He has his “finger on the pulse” of the black community — he’s the head of the “Minority Development Division” — and that means exploitation!

One look at Jamison’s campaign for “Mumblin’ Jack” malt liquor and you can understand the fury and contempt that the D.R.O.P. Squad has for him.  The solution, they kidnap him and set about “deprogramming” his exploitation of “his people.”

The bulk of the film is the ever-increasing tempo of intimidation and violence against the hapless Jamison, even to the point where fellow D.R.O.P Squad member, Garvey (Ving Rhames — Pulp Fiction was released the same year as Drop Squad), begins to question if their tactics are as bad as what they are fighting against.

Teamed with this ahead-of-its-time film is director Vondie Curtis-Hall’s 2006 film, Waist Deep, starring Tyrese Gibson as a former gang-banger (did some time) who is trying to go straight, but when his son is kidnapped, it’s back to the streets and anything, everything — no matter the consequences — is in play to save his son.
