Cinema Libre Tabs Apr. 10 For The DVD Debut Of Documentary Filmmaker Leslie Zemekis’ Mabel, Mabel Tiger Trainer

Cinema Libre announced this past week that documentary filmmaker Leslie Zemekis’ Mabel, Mabel Tiger Trainer will be available on DVD this coming Apr. 10.

Mabel Stark was the first and ultimately the most famous female “big cat” trainer (act) in the history of big top circus acts.  She was a star for the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, traveled the world and Mabel Stark easily rivaled her male counterparts, including Clyde Beatty, in both her courage and skill.

Her early history in the circus is a little sketchy, much of that being the embellishments and legend-building created by Stark herself … after all, she was a “show woman” and knew how to sell the persona.   Zemekis has assembled a fascinating look at this “show woman” from another era ... one that is both riveting and terrifying.

She worked in the “steel arena,” the big cage with the big cats, with only a whip, a chair and a gun loaded with blanks to protect her!!!   She was the best, but even she lost the battle with the big cats and on several occasions was nearly killed — in 1916 during a rehearsal at the National Orange Show in San Bernardino, California a lion nearly ripped her arm off and in 1928 in Bangor, Maine she was nearly ripped to pieces by two tigers, who had — negligently — not been fed prior to her working with them (378 stitches were required to piece her back together).

She was married three, maybe four, possibly five times — there’s that great line from the film, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, “When the legend becomes fact, print the legend.”   Mabel Stark is a legend … according to her own writings, her one great love was her husband (third), Arthur Rooney, a circus performer like herself, who was a cross dresser and died in 1927 under “mysterious circumstances.”   Big cat trainer, circus performer, legend … Mabel Stark, it’s all here in Leslie Zemekis’ marvelous film.

Bonus features included with the DVD release of Mabel, Mabel Tiger Trainer are a trio of featurettes — “Behind the Scenes,” “Remembering Jungleland” and “Training Tigers.”

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's Deep Blue Sea 2 Surfaces On DVD And Blu-ray On Apr. 17

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will be diving deep for thrills and chills on Apr. 17 with the home entertainment debut of director Darin Scott’s Deep Blue Sea 2, the long-overdue sequel to the 1999 killer shark blockbuster, Deep Blue Sea.

Planned for release are both DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack editions.

You would have thought that after the misguided shark-intelligence experimentations of the first film went totally off the rails that such tinkering would have been put on-hold forever.    But when the duplicitous Carl Durant (Michael Beach — Insidious: Chapter 2, Assassins Tale, Patriots Day, etc.), a pharmaceutical zillionaire, recruits a top-notch team to study the potential benefits of shark “antibodies” as a potential for new cures it is, of course, not what it seems … here we go again!!!   

Joining the research team at Durant’s behest is Dr. Misty Calhoun (Danielle Savre — Boogeyman 2, Wild About Harry), a world-renown shark conservationist, which means that his state-of-the-art research station must be on the up-and-up (said the spider to the fly) for her to be a consultant.   For any genre fan worth his or her “salt,” we know that the rest of the research crew are certainly nothing more than a  “pool” of potential victims, or should we say “chum” for Durant’s little friends … expect a shark feast even more deadlier than the first go’round!

Bonus gems include deleted scenes, a gag reel and two production featurettes — “Returning to the Deep: The Making of Deep Blue Sea 2” and “Deep Blue Sea 2: Death by Shark.”

The Home Entertainmnet Launch Of Three Billboard Outside Ebbing, Missouri By 20th Century-Fox Home Entertainment Will Be On Feb. 27

Last week, 20^th Century-Fox Home Entertainment assigned Mar. 13 as the home entertainment launch date for the studio’s Best Animated Feature Oscar-nominee, Ferdinand.   It is almost a certainty that Coco will win the gold in this category, so they gave Disney plenty of room to bathe in the glow of their Feb. 27 home entertainment push for Coco.   No surprise there.

This week 20^th Century-Fox Home Entertainment turned to the Best Picture category for release news, where we pointed out last week with the write-up on the details about the Ferdinand home entertainment push, that the studio would essentially be competing with itself in this category.   Pick one, The Shape of Water or Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri … unless the members of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences go completely off the rails, one of these two films will be the Oscar-winner for Best Picture.  

Judging from the Feb. 27 street date assignment for writer/director Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, the studio is putting their money behind The Shape of Water as the likely winner.

They figure that The Shape of Water will win on Mar. 4, bask in the glow of the win theatrically (a nice little two week bump) and then get a home entertainment release date … indeed, 20^th Century-Fox Home Entertainment could make a Mar. 13 or Mar. 20 street date announcement as early as next week.

Both the Producers Guild and the Directors Guild have bestowed Best Picture laurels on The Shape of Water, which are far more important (from an insiders POV) than the Golden Globe’s selection of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri as Best Picture.

Either way, Fox wins!!!

As to the Feb. 27 release date for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, it will be a three-SKU product offering — DVD, Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack and 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack editions will be available.

The ARR is 109 days and domestic box office receipts currently stand at $41.8 million (that number will continue to grow over the next few weeks).

As to bonus delights associated with the home entertainment launch of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, there is Martin McDonagh’s 2004 short film, Six Shooter (which won the Oscar for Best Short Film, Live Action) and a production featurette titled “Crucify ‘Em: The Making of Three Billboards.”

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment Tabs Apr. 10 For The Home Entertainment Launch Of Molly's Game

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment looks to the 10^th of April as the street date for director Aaron Sorkin’s biopic, Molly’s Game, based on the tell-all by Molly Bloom, “Molly's Game: The True Story of the 26-Year-Old Woman Behind the Most Exclusive, High-Stakes Underground Poker Game in the World” (now, that’s a mouthful).

The ARR works out to 106 days and domestic box office receipts currently stand at $25.9 million.

Jessica Chastain stars as Molly Bloom, an aspiring Olympic skier who has a career-ending injury and makes the unlikely transition into the world (over a number of years) of managing high-stakes poker games.   She’s good at it, the players like the games she runs … but eventually all good things must come to an end!!!

The only bonus nugget is a production featurette titled “Building an Empire.” 

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment To Release Director Luca Guadagnino’s Call Me by Your Name On DVD And Blu-ray On Mar. 13

With a quartet of Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, it came as no surprise this week that Sony Pictures Home Entertainment would be moving director Luca Guadagnino’s film adaptation of the 2007 André Aciman novel, Call Me by Your Name, to the home entertainment marketplace before the spotlight of the Oscar moment fades on Mar. 13.

With just $11.3 million in box office receipts, it is a smart move on Sony Pictures part to get as much exposure as possible for the DVD and Blu-ray launch while the getting is good.    Despite Best Picture, Best Actor (Timothée Chalamet), Best Adapted Screenplay (James Ivory) and Best Song (“The Mystery of Love”) nominations, Call Me by Your Name will be an also-ran following the Oscar telecast of Mar. 4 … the deck is simply stacked against the film.

For the record, the ARR works out to 109 days.

Bonus features include commentary with actors Timothée Chalamet (Lady Bird, Hostiles, etc.) and Michael Stuhlbarg (The Post, The Shape of Water, etc. … and as Rothstein in Boardwalk Empire), the Sufjan Stevens’ music video, “The Mystery of Love,” and a pair of production featurettes — “Snapshots of Italy: The Making of Call Me by Your Name” and “In Conversation With Armie Hammer, Timothée Chalamet, Michael Stuhlbarg & Luca Guadagnino.”
