20th Century-Fox Home Entertainment Goes DVD-Only For Director Sean McNamara's The Miracle Season On July 31

Director Sean McNamara’s inspirational tale of the Iowa City’s West High School girl’s volleyball team overcoming their grief after the tragic death of their team leader, Caroline “Line” Found (played by Danika Yarosh), plays out in the film release of The Miracle Season.

20^th Century-Fox Home Entertainment announced this past week that a DVD-only edition will be retailer-ready on July 31.   That date yields an ARR of 116 days and ticket sales for this not-a-dry-eye-in-the-house story were a little light at $10.2 million.

McNamara previously teamed with Helen Hunt in the 2011 film release of Soul Surfer — another based on actual events story.   Here she plays the coach of the team, with Erin Moiarty (Captain Fantastic) as Caroline’s best friend and dispirited teammate and William Hurt as the girl’s heartbroken father.   

You’ve seen the story before … girl dies, team falls apart (losing heart), gets crushed, but then finds the will to go on, etc., etc.    The Miracle Season delivers the emotional punch that one would expect from such a story, with Hunt, Hurt and Moiarty all “serving” up terrific performances.

Bonus features are limited to the featurette titled “Star Player.”

Lionsgate Home Entertainment Tabs July 31 For The Release Of DVD And Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack Editions Of Director Rob Greenburg's Overboard

When the “Hollywood” studios run out of ideas they simply remake something.  Back in 1987, writer Leslie Dixon (Mrs. Doubtfire) and director Garry Marshall delivered Overboard (with Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell).   

It was conjured up this year by director Rob Greenburg, with the Hawn/Russell roles reversed in presentation of Overboard … Eugenio Derbez is rich, suffering from amnesia and overboard, while Anna Faris is the hired help who does the old switcheroo.   

Lionsgate Home Entertainment announced this past week that DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack editions will be ready for summertime viewing enjoyment on July 31.    

The ARR is a swift-to-market 88 days and multiplex activity generated $47.6 million in ticket sales during May and June.

Bonus features include commentary from writer/director Rob Greenberg (three Emmys for his work on the Frasier comedy series), who is joined by producer/writer Bob Fisher (We’re the Millers, Wedding Crashers) and producer Benjamin Odell, plus three featurettes — “Culture Clash,” “Captains of the Ship: Bob & Rob” and “Chemistry is Comedy.”

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment's Avengers: Infinity War Heads Home On Aug. 14

If you thought the political landscape these days was dominated by leaks about this and that — and that such things were exclusive to politics — you would be only be half right.   

The home entertainment business, when it comes to news about blockbuster theatrical releases making the transition from their local multiplex venues to the home entertainment marketplace, can be just as sieve-like. 

Directors Anthony and Joe Russo’s Avengers: Infinity War will arrive on DVD, Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD on Aug. 14, but Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment has yet to make that official.   No matter, orders are being taken, including for those “exclusive” special editions over at Target and Best Buy.

You would think that one of the most expensive films to be made in the history of cinema would get some special attention, especially one coming from the Disney/Marvel universe.   There should be actors, filmmakers, studios brass, press and cocktails, with an appropriate studio backdrop to top off a big, showy formal announcement, but it’s not happening.

Sure, you can point fingers here and there, but Disney did get blindsided by Comcast last week and had to scramble to sweeten its offer for Fox, so that likely sucked all of the air out of the room.  And retailers — being what they are — are more than eager to get the jump on Amazon.com these days so that they can log “their fair share” of the business.   The result is, sadly, business as usual and ballyhoo be damned!

For the record, the ARR comes in at 109 days and ticket sales currently stand at an eye-popping $655.1 million.

VCI Entertainment Targets Sept.11 For The Double-Disc DVD Release Of The Four-Film Boris Karloff Collection

VCI Entertainment announced this past week that a double-disc DVD collection of four rare Boris Karloff films will be released on Sept. 11.

Titled the Boris Karloff Collection, the chills begin with director Jack Hill’s Dance of Death (aka House of Evil), which is based on a blend Edgar Allan Poe’s The Fall of the House of Usher and his short poem, “Dance of Death.” 

The other rarities are Torture Zone (aka Fear Chamber), Cult of the Dead (aka: Isle of the Snake People) and Alien Terror.

Mill Creek Entertainment Announces First Wave Of Post-Labor Day Priced-To-Collect Blu-ray Product Offerings For Delivery On Sept. 11

Mill Creek Entertainment announced its first wave of post-Labor Day priced-to-collect Blu-ray product offerings this past week.   The target date for delivery is Sept. 11.

Leading “the pack” is writer/director Joe Camp’s 2004 film release of a Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack edition of Benji: Off the Leash!

This time out the story is something of a film within a film as the producers of the Benji movies hit the road to look for a new canine to star to be in the next installment in the series.  

This conceit introduces us to Colby (Nick Whitaker — Joseph Smith: Prophet of the Restoration, High School Musical), whose mother lives with a none-too-reputable dog breeder named Hatchett (Chris Kendrick).  He mistreats and neglects his kennel dogs, including his prized breeding dog, Daisy.

Colby is so upset by the treatment of Daisy that he hides her and cares for her after her latest litter of pups are born.   When Hatchett discovers the deceit, he goes ballistic and demands that the kid bring Daisy and her puppies back to the kennel, but he holds back the runt of the litter and cares for her … she will, through a series of adventures, become the new Benji!

To add a little levity to the proceedings — and to allow time for the puppy to grow up (three separate dogs were used during the “growing up” process) — Joe Camp introduces us to “Lizard Tongue,” a stray dog that defies capture.   Two local animal control workers, Livingston (Randall Newsome) and Sheldon (Dane Stevens) are constantly thwarted in their attempts to corral the mutt!   

Bonus features include commentary from writer/director Joe Camp, who is joined by film editor Dava Whisenant, composer Anthony Di Lorenzo and producer Margaret Loesch.   The is a behind-the-scenes featurette and the trip down memory lane presentation titled “Benji Movie Memories,” which delivers scenes from five different Benji movies starring three different dogs as Benji.

Also getting a green light on Sept. 11 is the massive 16-disc Blu-ray collection of Denis Leary and Peter Tolan’s New York City firefighters TV drama, Rescue Me.  All seven seasons — 93 episodes — of the post-9/11 story about Tommy Gavin (Denis Leary) of FDNY Ladder Company 62 (62 Truck) are included here.   Gavin, who still grieves over the loss of 59 fellow firefighters who were at the Twin Towers on Sept. 11, is the lead … his personal life and the daily routine with fellow members of 62 Truck are often as combustible as the fires they fight.

Rounding out the first wave of September Blu-ray new arrivals is the Sept. 11 release of the 12-disc collection of Community: The Complete Series.   Of note, Mill Creek Entertainment is also offering a 12-disc DVD collection on the same date.

Jeff McHale stars a disgraced lawyer — a little detail about lying about his college education — who ends up at a local community college taking various classes to get the credits necessary to complete his degree.   That sets up the comedy hijinks as he is attracted to a self-styled “activist” played Gillian Jacobs and forms a “study group” to be around her.   Of course the “study group” is just a ruse, but soon more members join and it eventually becomes a multi-semester collection of misfits and eccentrics.

MVD Entertainment Group's Latest Marquee Collection Blu-ray Release Is Writer/Director Albert Pyun's Blast! On Aug. 28

And just like there are now three “Marquee Collection” Blu-ray releases in the pipeline from MVD Entertainment Group!   

Two weeks ago the Dwayne Johnson remake of Walking Tall was the launch title for this new promotion banner, which MVD describes as films too new to be “cult,” but just old enough to be “catalog,” — a companion class, if you will, to the company’s popular “Rewind Collection.” 

Last week director Joan Chen’s 2000 film releases of Autumn in New York, starring Richard Gere and Winona Ryder, was next “Marquee Collection” Blu-ray to be announced for delivery on Aug. 28.

This week it is Blast! on Blu-ray, the all-action thriller from writer/director Albert Pyun.   The street will also be Aug. 28.

Jack Bryant (Linden Ashby) is in the wrong place at the wrong time.   It’s been like that for a number of years for this former Olympic hopeful, who let booze and injuries bring him down to the low-level world of being a building janitor.   

He’d actually prefer being back at home watching the Women’s Olympic Swim Team on TV, but when the international terrorist known as Omodo (Andrew Divoff) and crew take the team hostage (at the Atlanta Summer Olympics) he finds that he has an exclusive front row seat to the terror.   Only a cell phone to an outside expert in tactics (Rutger Hauer), his wits and his long forgotten martial arts skills stand between torture and death for the hostages!!
