The Film Detective Tabs Dec. 14 For The Sherlock Holmes Vault Collection On Blu-ray And DVD

The Film Detective has assembled a beautiful collection of classic Sherlock Holmes movies — and more, much more — for release on Dec. 14 as both four-disc Blu-ray and DVD sets.

Titled The Sherlock Holmes Vault Collection, we kick off the proceedings with writer/director Leslie S. Hiscott’s The Fatal Hour, the 1931 film adaptation of two short stories from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.   These short stories (ultimately there were 56 written) were combined for the first sound feature-length film, which was released theatrically one year after Conan Doyle’s death.

The two in question were his 1893 short story “The Adventures of the Final Problem,” which was significant on two counts — it introduced Moriarty and Holmes dies — and the short story published ten years later, “The Adventure of the Empty House,” which brought Holmes back to life (public pressure to keep the series going).

In The Fatal Hour, Sherlock Holmes is played by Arthur Wontner (his sound film debut … he would reprise the role of Holmes on four additional occasions during the 1930s), Watson was portrayed by Aussie character actor Ian Fleming (not to be confused with the creator of the 007/James Bond adventures) and the role of Moriarty went to Norman McKinnel.

This newly-restored presentation of The Fatal Hour comes with a commentary option provided by author Jennifer Churchill (“Movies are Magic”), the first segment (of three) of the featurette titled “The Adventures of Sam Sherman,” a radio recreation and silent short films, Baffled (1900) and both cut and uncut versions of the 1918 silent short film, A Black Sherlock Holmes.

The next film in this magnificent collection is writer/director Leslie S. Hiscott’s 1935 film, The Triumph of Sherlock Holmes, which was an adaption of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s 1915 novel, “The Valley of Fear.”

Once again Arthur Wontner and Ian Fleming are Holmes and Watson, however Lyn Harding (Goodbye, Mr. Chips, The Constant Nymph, Fire Over England) takes over the role of Moriarty.

Bonus features include commentary with film scholar Jason A. Ney, part two of “The Adventures of Sam Sherman” featurette, the 1912 silent short film, The Copper Beeches and the 1954 Brit TV episode, The Web: Blind Man’s Bluff.

Next in the series is Silver Blaze, which was also known as Murder at the Baskervilles.   Wontner, Fleming and Ney are all back as Holmes, Watson and Moriarty respectively, however direction was taken over by Thomas Bentley.

The film was released in England in 1937, but there was little interest in bucking heads with 20^th Century-Fox and their big budget Sherlock Holmes productions of The Hound of the Baskervilles and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, starring Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce.    However, when Fox decided not to proceed with the series, and before going over to Universal, Astor Pictures jumped at the opportunity to distribute Silver Blaze in the United States in 1941, however they retitled it Murder at the Baskervilles to take advantage of the publicity generated by Fox.

Bonus features include commentary featuring Phoef Sutton and Jordan Legan, the final segment of “The Adventures of Sam Sherman” the Felix-the-Cat cartoon, Sure Luck Holmes and the 1913 silent short film, Cousins of Sherlocko.

The fourth film in this collection is director Edwin L. Marin’s 1933 film release of A Study in Scarlet, starring Reginal Owen as Sherlock Holmes and Warburton Gamble as Watson.

Bonus features here include commentary with Peter Atkins and David Breckman, the Mutt & Jeff cartoon, Slick Sleuths, and the documentary titled Elementary Cinema.

It was Labor Day weekend in 1971, the end of summer and the beginning of the long haul to Christmas.   It was a traditional dead zone for the theatre business.   School was back in, Friday night football for the teens, the new television season was beginning and so it was a struggle to find audiences ... box office results would go into a down-cycle after the summer rush.

But on this particular Labor Day weekend a nothing sexploitation film would open in theatres and set off a fire storm of interest.   It was filmed in the Philippines on a micro budget, but everything clicked … it was a blessing for theatre owners and the first of a series of women-in-prison films that would end up creating its own cult sub-genre.

Of course, we are talking about director Jack Hill’s Big Doll House, starring a new arrival by the name of Pam Greer.   She had a small part in Beyond the Valley of the Dolls and that was it.   Now she suddenly found herself, not in Hollywood, but making a movie in Manila … clearly, this is a career-ender.

It was anything but that and now a newly minted, digitally-remastered DVD edition will be heading home from MVD Entertainment Group on Dec. 7 … the perfect “stocking-stuffer!!”

Also in the cast are Judy Brown (Slaughter’s Big Rip-Off, Willie Dynamite, Psychic Killer) and Pat Woodell, who had played Bobbie Jo Bradley in the Petticoat Junction sitcom series, but was now reduced to playing a prisoner in a sexploitation film in the Philippines (she stuck around the Philippines to co-star with John Ashley in The Twilight People, returned to the United States and landed the lead in Class of ’74, was Heather in director Arthur Marks’ 1973 hit, The Roommates … and then retired from the movie business).

Others in the cast include Roberta Collins, another actress just starring out and now in the Philippines doing a certain-to-be career-ending sexploitation film.   Instead, it launched her career, she too would stick around for Women in Cages, join fellow cast-member Pat Woodell in The Roommates, then came Caged Heat, the cult-status role of Matilda the Hun in Paul Bartel’s 1975 classic, Death Race 2000, Eaten Alive would follow and she shinned as Lana in Hardbodies.

There are two others of note, the died-too-young Kathryn Loder (Foxy Brown) as the sadistic Lucian, the warden, and this odd-looking fellow by the name of Harry, who sells “supplies” to the prisoners … it was none other than genre-fan favorite, the late Sig Haig!!

The film is exactly what it seems to be.   A women-in-prison sexploitation thriller, loaded with violence, kinky sex and more kinky sex.   But it works like a charm and created career-making opportunities for this “all-star” cast.   A classic!

The American Genre Film Archive (AGFA) Tabs Dec. 28 For The Blu-ray Release Of Blood-A-Rama Triple Frightmare

The American Genre Film Archive (AGFA) has a triple-feature Blu-ray collection lined for delivery just in time for a New Year’s celebration that will have genre-fans looking forward to Dec. 28 in anticipation.

The Blood-A-Rama Triple Frightmare features new 2K film restorations, in association with Something Weird, that are from the only known surviving 35mm prints.   Rare and wonderful, indeed.

Certainly best-known among the collection is writer/director Leonard Kirtman’s 1971horror gem, Carnival of Blood, which was shot on location at Coney Island and featured among its cast a new arrival by the name of John Harris, who played Gimpy (it was actually Burt Young in his film debut … he would be nominated for Best Supporting Actor in 1976 for Rocky).

A bitchy woman (Linda Kurtz) has her head cut off on a house of horrors carnival ride and soon a sleezy hooker (Eve Packer) is gutted under the fame Coney Island pier.  Next comes a rather large blonde bimbo (Gloria Spivak) who meets a gruesome death in a nearby dark alley.   The one thing they all have in common, they got teddy bears at the dark booth … could there be a connection?

Next on this triple-bill is director Charles Nizet’s 1974 bizarre horror tale, Help Me … I’m Possessed, which was also known as Nightmare at Blood Castle.

This is one of those late-night guilty pleasures.   You have a monster on the loose killing people, it seems to be living in a cave.  There is also a “rest home,” the Blackwood Sanitarium, which has a dungeon, where Dr. Blackwood (Bill Greer) carries out experiments.   He is assisted by a hunchback named Carl (Pierre Agostino), who is handy with a hatchet.   The dungeon also has a guillotine, which handy for chopping people’s heads off.   Sexy nurse too (Blackie Hunt).

With so much going on it is hard not to fall in love with this micro-budget gem!!

Rounding out the Blood-A-Rama Triple Frightmare is director Joy N. Houck Jr.’s 1973 horror/mystery, Night of the Strangler.

Filmed in New Orleans, this is an American-made giallo murder mystery with creepy killings and it is near impossible to figure out who is doing the murders and why.   A twist reveals all!!

The Criterion Collection Announces It February Of 2022 Film Restoration Calendar

The Criterion Collection announced its February slate of new film restorations this past week that will be making their way to the home entertainment packaged media marketplace as DVD and Blu-ray product offerings during the course of the month.

Arriving on Feb. 1 is a new 2K digital restoration of director Douglas Sirk’s 1956 film adaptation of Robert Wilder’s 1946 novel, Written on the Wind, which was “inspired” by actual events that took place in 1932.

The film stars Rock Hudson and Robert Stack as Texas oil playboys, Mitch Wayne and Kyle Hadley, Lauren Bacall as Kyle’s wife Lucy (a strange courtship if there ever was one) and Dorothy Malone (who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress) as Kyle’s sister, Marylee.

The film opens with a “bang” … an event takes place that will come full circle.   We learn that both Kyle and Marylee are weak, privileged and prone to drinking.   Marylee has always wanted the level-headed Mitch, but he will not succumb to her endless advances.   In turn, Mitch falls for Lucy, but respects her decision to marry Kyle, whom she appears to reform.   Pure soap, and wonderfully done!!

Bonus features include the 2008 documentary titled Acting for Douglas Sirk and a newly-prepared video session with film scholar Patricia White.

Shifting to Feb. 15, we find a new 4K film restoration (The Museum of Modern Art along with Serge Bromberg’s Lobster Films) of director Leo McCarey’s 1939 shipboard romance, Love Affair, starring Irene Dunne and Charles Boyer.

Nominated for Best Picture, Best Original Script and acting nominations for Irene Dunne (Best Actress) and Maria Ouspenskaya (Best Supporting Actress), Love Affair almost didn’t get made.

Tensions were high in Europe in 1938 and the French government wanted to keep the American public on its side, so it was a no-no for a Frenchman to be having an illicit love-affair with an American woman.   The entire first script had to be junked and instead of a French-based romance, the action was moved to a ship-board romance.

The problem that both France, and later the Production Code, had with the film was that both Irene Dunne’s character and Charles Boyer’s character were already engaged to be married to other people.   With all of these problems, it somehow all worked out … so much so that the film was remade in 1957 as An Affair to Remember with Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr.

Bonus features include two silent short films from director Leo McCarey, Looking for Sally (1925) and Mighty Like a Moose (1926), two separate radio adaptations of the film and newly-prepared video sessions.

Rounding out the February release calendar from the Criterion Collection are the Coen Brothers’ Miller’s Crossing (Blu-ray only on Feb. 8) and director Ann Hui’s 1982 film, Boat People (Feb. 22).

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment Gives Up On Director Ridley Scott's The Last Duel With A Rush To Market On Dec. 14

It would seem, and we are just guessing, but if you are Walt Disney Studios the point of buying 20^th Century-Fox for a hefty chunk of change had nothing to do with any films that were in the production pipeline.   Release them, be done with them … and do it as quickly as possible.

The latest Fox production to get the bum’s rush would be auteur filmmaker Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel, a 14^th Century period piece that took a nosedive at the box office.   You spend a reported $100 million in producing a film with the likes of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck in the cast and then generate just $10 million in box office revenues it is hard to see anything but red ink.

In any case, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment is sending this little doggie home in lickety-split fashion on Dec. 14, which yields a zoom-zoom ARR of just 60 days.

Planned for release are stand-alone DVD and Blu-ray selections, plus a 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack edition.

Bonus features are limited to the featurette titled “The Making of The Last Duel.”
