Paramount Home Media Tabs July 30 For The DVD Debut Of Butterbean’s Café

Nickelodeon will be teaming up with Paramount Home Media on July 30 for the DVD debut of Butterbean’s Café.

This new CGI series premiered on Nick Jr. last November and features Butterbean, her little sister Cricket, and Butterbean’s magical fairy friends, Dazzle, Poppy and Jasper, who team up with Butterbean at her new cafe in Puddlebrook to serve up healthy snacks and treats.   They have help too, which comes in the form of celebrity chefs (their voices that is), who stop in to teach Butterbean and her friends cool recipes and cooking tips.

It’s not all cup cakes and roses as the jealous Ms. Marmalady is always trying to gum up the works.   But through teamwork and steadfast friendship Butterbean and her pals manage to overcome all obstacles thrown their way.

Arrow Video Restores Director Kathryn Bigelow's The Loveless For Blu-ray Release On July 9

Fatalistic, raw, neo-noir in style, future Oscar winner Kathryn Bigelow’s 1982 directing debut, The Loveless — co-directed and co-written with future film producer Monty Montgomery — is getting a new 2K film restoration from the original camera negative.  Montgomery (film producer for Wild at Heart, Portrait of a Lady) and Doyle Smith, the director of photography, will be supervising the restoration. 

Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution guidance provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has tabbed July 9 as the street date for the Blu-ray release.

We are first introduced to Vance (Willem Dafoe in his first starring role), an “outlaw” biker heading south to the Daytona “races,” who stops to aid a woman in distress … fixes her flat tire (good guy), but is not happy with her cash offering, so he robs her (bad guy).   Biker, impulsive … with these broad cinematic brush strokes Bigelow establishes Dafoe’s character (Dafoe runs with the rest).

Our anti-hero soon ends up at a roadside diner in Georgia where he strikes up a conversation with Augusta (Elizabeth Gans) and we learn that he’s part of a larger group of bikers — a “gang,” if you will — and he’s a bit miffed that they haven’t arrived (gonna miss those “races” in Daytona).    

Eventually other members of Vance’s contingent roll into town, one of them has problems with his bike, so that will have to be repaired.   This additional delay gives Vance time to hook up with the free-wheeling Telena (Marin Kanter — Endangered Species, Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains), who has a violent backstory.   She’s attracted to the outlaw Vance, but has a brutal father by the name of Tarver (J. Don Ferguson — Norma Rae, Our Winning Season, The Long Riders, etc.), who beat her badly at one time, leaving her with a scar on her face … the sports car she tools around town in was given to her by her father out of guilt for what he at done (this testy relationship will come back into play as the storyline proceeds … with tragic results).

Bikers, small town, sexually-charged and the locals resentful of their presence.   It’s a volatile combination that will eventually reach a head one evening at the local roadhouse (strip club).   

Bonus features for The Loveless include commentary from filmmaker Monty Montgomery, who is joined by documentary filmmaker Elijah Drenner, a trio of newly-prepared featurettes — “No Man’s Friend Today: Making The Loveless,” “U.S. 17: Shooting The Loveless” and “Chrome and Hot Leather: The Look of The Loveless” — plus an audio session with musician Eddy Dixon (who wrote and performed “Relentless” from the film).

Indican Pictures' The Trouble With Terkel On DVD On June 11

On June 11 look for Indican Pictures’ DVD release of the animated adventure from hell, The Trouble with Terkel.

The film, which is a cross between an arthouse entry and a very inappropriate (and proudly so) Middle School bullying tale (think: South Park meets Beavis and Butt-Head), has been playing various theatrical venues for over two full years.

The film itself began as a team-venture with Danish filmmakers Thorbjorn Christoffersen and Stefan Fjeldmark, but for the domestic market, producer/director Randolph Kret (Gang Land, Gunfight at Yuma, etc.) picked it up, recruited English actors and took the entire affair of Terkel up a notch (or two … or five … or six).

The result is a sordid (in a good way) animated tale about Terkel (voiced by Mike Olsen), a seemingly ordinary kid in school, whose life spirals completely out of control because (get ready, it is a long, long list). First, there’s a strange new teacher by the name of Justin (Toby Stephens), and then there is Terkel’s uncle (voiced by Chad Ridgely), who is a mean drunk and those two kids at school who make him their bullying target.    

Add in Fat Doris (voiced by Vanessa Gomez) — who kills herself — his parents are clueless (meaning disconnected — his mom must smoke ten packs a day), his best friend, Jason (voiced by Eve Mauro), who has a secret relationship with Doris (don’t ask) and on top of all of this someone is sending him death threats!

Whew, that’s quite a load on Terkel’s plate!   Will he join Doris in the great beyond or will the truth be revealed … June 11 on DVD, this will be your chance to find out if you haven’t been fortunate enough to discover The Trouble with Terkel at a local screening!

Cleopatra Entertainment Targets Aug. 27 For The DVD Debut Of Writer/Director Amanda Kramer’s Ladyworld

Cleopatra Entertainment, with sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has selected Aug. 27 as the DVD debut date for writer/director Amanda Kramer’s intense thriller, Ladyworld.

Be good, be kind, be lady-like … until the end of the world arrives!  And then you are on your own!!

Eden (Atheena Frizzell — Never Going Back, Hellion) is having a birthday party, her parents have left her the keys to the apartment … have fun with your seven party guests.   It’s a birthday party for teenage girls — no boys — so what could possibly go wrong?   

Ladyworld quickly mutates from this apparent teenage slumber party into a shocking statement on phobias — sexual and otherwise — societal pressures and how quickly the mores of civilized behavior can breakdown.   

The party goers, including Piper (Annalise Basso — Slender Man, Ouija: Origin of Evil, Captain Fantastic) and Olivia (Ariela Barer), find themselves caught up in an apparent earthquake (the film simply begins in the black with a deafening roar) and they do the normal thing following such an event and begin to sort things out ... “you OK?” … “did any thing fall on you?” … Wow, what was that?”

Once they realize that they are actually trapped in the apartment and that help might not be on the way — and that supplies are surprisingly sparse — things begin to go south.   They form into two “tribes” headed by the aforementioned Piper and Olivia and make their first attempts at asserting control.  Hysteria rises as the young women fear that an unknown “man” is lurking within their apartment prison. 

In filmmaker Amanda Kramer’s Ladyworld, the things that make young women “lady-like” are quickly stripped away and that eerie line from Rudyard Kipling’s famous 1919 poem, “The Female of the Species,” comes to bear ... “For the female of the species is more deadly than the male.”

4K Ultra HD Edition Of Stanley Kubrick's The Shining Will Be Released By Warner Bros. Home Entertainment On Oct. 1

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is out early — extra early — with news this past week that Stanley Kubrick’s landmark 1980 horror classic, The Shining, will be getting a new 4K scan from the original 35mm camera negative and will be available for film buffs and genre fans to enjoy on Oct. 1 as a 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Comb Pack presentation.   

This will be the original 146-minute version — trimmed versions have clocked in at 142 and 144 respectively.

All of the bonus goodies are archived from previous editions and include commentary from Steadicam inventor Garrett Brown and Stanley Kubrick biographer John Baxter, three featurettes — “Video from the Overlook: Crafting The Shining,” “The Visions of Stanley Kubrick” and “Wendy Carlos, Composer” — and Vivian Kubrick’s short documentary titled The Making of The Shining.

The Criterion Collection Announces Its August Of 2019 DVD And Blu-ray Release Calendar

The Criterion Collection has revealed its August line-up of new film restorations destined for release as both DVD and Blu-ray product offerings during the month.

Leading the summer group of film selections is director Douglas Sirk’s 1954 film adaptation of the Lloyd C. Douglas novel, Magnificent Obsession, which had previously been made by director John M. Stahl in 1935 (which is included here as a bonus feature).   The street date for both the double-disc DVD and Blu-ray editions will be Aug. 20.

This is Jane Wyman’s picture.   Despite trade rumors at the time reporting that both Olivia De Havilland and Joan Crawford were being considered for the starring role of Helen Phillips, Sirk put those “rumors” to rest by stating in no uncertain terms that it was indeed Jane Wyman who approached him with the idea of remaking the film.   It was a savvy move on her part as she was nominated for Best Actress for her performance.   

Other rumors included Jeff Chandler being considered for the role of playboy Bob Merrick, but Rock Hudson was the ultimate choice.   

Indeed, so successful was the combination of Rock Hudson, Jane Wyman and filmmaker Douglas Sirk with this film, that they reunited the following year for All That Heaven Allows.  

As to bonus goodies, as mentioned, the original 1935 film version of Magnificent Obsession, starring Irene Dunne and Robert Taylor, is included here, plus there is a vintage commentary track featuring film scholar Thomas Doherty.  Documentary filmmaker Eckhart Schmidt’s 1991 German-language documentary titled From UFA to Hollywood: Douglas Sirk Remembers is also included here.

Also on the August release calendar from Criterion are Blu-ray and DVD editions of director Jane Campion’s 1990 bio pic about the life of writer Janet Frame (played by Kerry Fox), An Angel at My Table.   The street date will be Aug. 6.

Bonus features include commentary from filmmaker Jane Campion, who is joined by the director of photography, Stuart Dryburgh, and the film’s star, Kerry Fox, plus there are six deleted scenes, a vintage audio interview with Janet Frame (circa 1983) and vintage making-of documentary.

Rounding out the August release calendar from the Criterion Collection are Inland Sea (Aug. 13), Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice (Aug. 27) and The Koker Trilogy, featuring Where Is the Friend’s House?, And Life Goes On and Through the Olive Trees (also Aug. 27).
