Bayview Entertainment Tabs Oct. 26 As The DVD Debut Date For Writer/Director Ben Dixon's Old Habits Die Hard

Bayview Entertainment has a Halloween-season viewing treat lined up for release on DVD this coming Oct. 26.   This is writer/director Ben Dixon’s Old Habits Die Hard.

Allison Hollis (Stacey Dixon — Shudder, Death Breed) is a gifted graphic artist who wants to make something of her life.   She’s been hard at work with the illustration of a graphic novel and she figures she might have a ticket out if she can get her work published.   Failing that, perhaps her skill-set might land her employment as a graphic designer … either way, she wants out.

It seems that her family, hard-workers one and all, are serial killers.   They are not on the run, they are not moving around hunting for their next victim.  Nope, they run a nice family business and are also part of the local law enforcement … the victims come to them, one way or another.

Jonah (Kane Hodder — Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood, Pumpkinhead II: Blood Wings) and Mama Hollis (Tricia Cast) run the Hollis Mortuary, upstanding pillars of the community.   That’s when they are not grave-robbing or drumming up business … a little extra on the side.    Sheriff Jimmy (Roger Hewlett) contributes when the opportunities arise.   Yup, it’s a regular serial-killing enterprise.

Did we mention that Allison’s inspiration for her “comic book” is what she has seen over the years … a regular horror tale, graphic, bloody and very, very creative!!   Do you think that might be a problem?

Dark Force Entertainment's New 2K Film Restoration Of Peter Perry's The Young Cycle Girls Arrives On Blu-ray On Nov. 23

Dark Force Entertainment, with sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has a new 2K film restoration — from the original camera negative, with scene-by-scene color restoration — of Peter Perry and John Arnoldy’s 1977, 1978 and 1979 film release of The Young Cycle Girls (aka: Cycle Vixens).   It will be making its Blu-ray debut on Nov. 23.

As an indie film (Peter Perry Pictures), the number of 35mm prints were limited, which accounted for the film’s sporadic release pattern and the two different titles.   We do know that Peter Perry did his best to exploit the film, getting it on the cover of Boxoffice Magazine on two separate occasions.   He also ran ads that took a page out of William Castle’s promotional book, “No one admitted during the last five minutes of this show!” (there was actually a reason for that).

It’s spring vacation and sisters Sheila (Daphne Lawrence) and Sherry (Deborah Marcus) team up with their friend Priss (Loraine Ferris) to ditch the chill of Colorado for sunny Southern California.   They don’t have your typical mode of transportation, a van or a convertible, but rather these young ladies are schooled in riding hogs, motorcycles.  

So off they go, they have a series of “adventures” on their way to the beach, which we won’t give away here, since one of these encounters “foreshadows” the ending (last five minutes).  The Young Cycle Girls was a drive-in favorite and sparked reviews from both ends of the critical spectrum … from trash and exploitative to insightful.

 

 

 

Paramount Home Entertainment's It's A Wonderful Life: 75th Anniversary Edition Arrives On Nov. 16

Paramount Home Entertainment has tabbed Nov. 16 as the street date for a double-disc Blu-ray edition of director Frank Capra’s It’s a Wonderful Life: 75^th Anniversary Edition.

The backstory to Philip Van Doren Stern's 1943 Christmas card story insert is every bit as entertaining as the film itself.   Cary Grant talked RKO into buying the film rights, but before it would go into production, RKO made a quick profit on the purchase by selling the screen rights to filmmaker Frank Capra’s start-up production company, Liberty Films.

It then became a vehicle for returning veteran James Stewart, who had risen from a Private to the rank of Colonel during the war.   He hadn’t done a film in four years and was actually thinking of retiring when Frank Capra approached him.   With Stewart on board, the search began for “Mary,” with Jean Arthur being the leading candidate, but a scheduling conflict prevented her from taking the role … others considered included Ann Dvorak, Olivia de Havilland and Martha Scott.   But after strong performance in They Were Expendable and The Picture of Dorian Gray, Donna Reed got the part.

The film was nominated Best Picture (losing out to The Best Years of Our Lives), James Stewart was nominated Best Actor (his third of five nominations … winning for The Philadelphia Story) and Frank Capra was nominated Best Director (his sixth and final Best Director nomination … winning three times during his career for It Happened One Night, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town and You Can’t Take it with You … only John Ford had more, with four).

Bonus features include both the original black and white presentation, plus the colorized version … and numerous vintage featurettes from previous DVD and Blu-ray editions.  

In other release news from Paramount Home Entertainment, the next “Paramount Presents” Blu-ray selection will be director Cameron Crowe’s Vanilla Sky: 20^th Anniversary Edition, which also streets on Nov. 16.

This is a new 4K film restoration supervised by the filmmaker himself.  

Bonus features include commentary from writer/director Cameron Crowe and composer Nancy Wilson (who was Crowe’s wife at the time), an alternate ending (with commentary by Crowe), a gag reel, deleted scenes, the newly prepared featurette titled “Filmmaker Focus: Cameron Crowe on Vanilla Sky” and several vintage featurettes.

 

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment Picks Nov. 02 For The Releases Of 18-disc Blu-ray Collection Of Sex In The City: The Complete Series

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment was busy this week with new Blu-ray product offerings plucked from the studio’s extensive film and television library.   

The first of these is the Nov. 2 Blu-ray launch of Sex and the City: The Complete Series, which includes, as a bonus, both of the theatrical releases — director Michael Patrick King’s 2008 film release of Sex and the City (which generated blockbuster numbers) and King’s 2010 follow-up, Sex and the City 2 (which also scored some nice summer box office action).

Sex and the City: The Complete Series will be an 18-disc collection showcasing all six-seasons of this Emmy-winning series (a total of 96 episodes). 

This boxed set comes loaded with extras, include an alternate ending to the series finale, deleted scenes, episode commentary with Michael Patrick King and vintage featurettes.

In other release news from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment this past week, there will be five new Blu-ray debuts selected from the studio’s film library that will be heading home during the month of September.

Arriving on Sept. 14 is director Michael Curtiz’s Christmas-of-1940 film release of Santa Fe Trail, teaming Errol Flynn with Olivia de Havilland, the seventh time that the two had appeared together.   Often labeled as a “Western,” Santa Fe Trail is actually a pre-Civil War look at the life and times of radical abolitionist John Brown (played by Raymond Massey), with a focus on events that took place in Kansas and ending with the raid on the Harper’s Ferry Armory in Virginia during October of 1859 (one of those trivia things … Harper’s Ferry became Harpers Ferry in 1891 and moved from Virginia to the newly-created state of West Virginia in June of 1863).

The battle itself featured the likes of Jeb Stuart (Errol Flynn) and George Armstrong Custer (Ronald Reagan) taking on John Brown’s forces … shortly after the siege the two would be on opposite sides in the Civil War.

The following week, Sept. 21, there are three new Blu-ray selections heading home.  These are: director Anthony Mann’s 1953 Western, The Naked Spur, starring James Stewart, Janet Leigh and Robert Ryan; Straight Time, featuring Dustin Hoffman, Gary Busey and Theresa Russell, and the 1949 thriller, The Window, directed by Ted Tetzlaff and starring child actor Bobby Driscoll (The Song of the South) as Tommy, a nine-year-old spinner of tall tales, who witnesses a murder … and no one believes him, except the killer!!

Closing out the month on Sept. 28 is the Blu-ray debut of director Sam Wood’s 1935 comedy, A Night at the Opera, starring the Marx Brothers.

Bonus features include commentary by film critic Leonard Maltin, the documentary titled Remarks on Marx, a pair of featurettes — “How to Sleep” and “Los Angeles: Wonder City of the West” — and more.

 

Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment Rushes Ryan Reynolds' Free Guy To Market In Just 60 Days With An Oct. 12 Street Date

Well, that was quick.  

You take last year’s summer-season $100 million-plus budgeted theatrical release, no, no wait, last year’s Christmas-season $100 million-plus budgeted theatrical release, which was delayed from last summer, and then pulled from the Christmas replacement time slot because of the Wuhan virus and all of the insanity that flowed from it … and then it finally got a mid-August theatrical launch this year.   The film in question pulls in $80 million in its first two weeks, what do you do if you are Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment? 

Before we answer that, we should point out that we are talking about director Shawn Levy’s Free Guy, starring Ryan Reynolds and Jodie Corner, which was originally targeted for the summer of 2020, but moved to Christmas when theatres shutdown.   Free Guy was then moved out of that slot when it became obvious that it would not see the numbers expected.    

Finally, it gets a summer of 2021 release and shines.  So, to answer the question, what does Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment do with the film?   Option A, let it run into the fall, perhaps pulling in $150 million or more in ticket sales and then release it to the home entertainment packaged media market place in the November/December timeframe.   Or, Option B, set a theatrical-to-home window of just 60 days and dump it?

Tick tock.  Tick tock.   Time is up.   Option B, of course.

Free Guy will be heading home on Oct. 12 as a three-SKU product offering.  There will be stand-alone DVD and Blu-ray selections, plus a 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack edition.   That date yields, as mentioned, an ARR of just 60-days.   From an exhibitor’s POV, that short of a window for a major theatrical release is a slap in the face.

This is the same studio that got the wrath of Scarlett Johansson — in the form of a multi-million-dollar lawsuit — over their handling of Black Widow.   Yes, you guessed it, the same studio that ignores the piracy of Cruella, Jungle Cruise, Black Widow and more.  It is no longer about the theatrical marketplace (and its health) or home entertainment, but rather the new god of Disney+ … chaos reigns.

Bonus features include deleted and extended scenes, a gag reel and a quartet of featurettes — “Dude vs. Guy,” “Creating Molotovgirl,” “It’s Taika’s World” and Welcome to Free City.”
