Severin FIlms Tabs Oct. 26 For The 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack Debut Of Director Paul Morrissey's Blood For Dracula

Severin Films, with sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has a Halloween-season treat lined up for delivery on Oct. 26 … just in time for tricks, treats and hi-def chills and thrills.

So, what is this genre-fan treasure?   Severin Films has plans for a new 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack edition of writer/director Paul Morrissey’s 1974 over-the-top vampire thriller, Blood for Dracula, starring Udo Kier as Count Dracula.

You know that it is not going to be a traditional vampire film when Dracula’s annoying “assistant,” Anton (Arno Jürging, who played Otto in Morrissey’s Flesh for Frankenstein the previous year), says that Romania has become too much of a problem and they have to pack up and head to Italy (a plot device, since they were shooting the entire film in Italy).   Besides, there are more virgins there … and that’s exactly what Dracula needs, the blood of a virgin.

Once in Italy, Dracula sets upon seducing each member of Marchese Di Fiore’s family (played by none other than Vittorio De Sica), but soon discovers that his sumptuous daughters, Rubinia (Stefania Casini — 1900, Suspiria) and Saphiria (Dominique Darel), are not the virgins that their mother, Marchesa (Maxime McKendry), claims them to be.   Poor Dracula, as he “tastes” each one of the lovely ladies in turn, it sickens him.

This is a major disappointment for Marchesa, who is eager to marry off one or the other to the count.  No problem, certainly her 14-year-old daughter, Perla (played by Silvia Dionisio, who was actually 23 at the time of the filming), would be the virgin that Count Dracula needs!!  

The family servant, Mario (Joe Dallesandro — Flesh for Frankenstein, Black Moon, The Limey, Cry Baby), is wise to what Dracula is up to and decides to take matters into his own hands to make sure that Perla is no longer a virgin … and therefore no longer a source of blood for the count.

Blood for Dracula is a wild and often excessive; explicit entry into the vampire cinematic world … with an ending that is to be savored as Mario and Dracula fight to the death for the honor of the lovely Perla.   It is a great finish!!

Bonus features include a whopping ten featurettes — “Trans-Human Flesh and Blood,” “Rubinia’s Homecoming,” “Blood for Udo,” “Conversation with a Vampire,” “Bloodthirsty,” “Black Cherry,” “The Blood of These Whores,” “Sad, Romantic Dracula” and “The Roman Connection.”

As an added bonus, there is a CD of the soundtrack include in the Combo Pack.

 

 

 

 

Ronin Flix Picks Nov. 23 For The Blu-ray Release Of The Happy Hooker Goes Hollywood

Ronin Flix, with sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has selected Nov. 23 as the street date for a Blu-ray edition of writer/director Alan Roberts’ 1980 comedy romp, The Happy Hooker Goes Hollywood.

A movie within a movie begins with the head of Warkoff Bros. Studios, W. B.” Warkoff (played by comedy legend Phil Silvers), getting a brainstorm one day and demanding that his son-in-law, Joseph Rottman (Richard Deacon — The Gnome-Mobile, Lady in Cement … as Mel Cooley on The Dick Van Dyke Show), who is the studio’s president, contact Xaviera Hollander, the high-priced call girl who wrote the New York Times best seller, “The Happy Hooker,” and make a deal for the movie rights.

Hollander (played by Martine Beswick — as Bond Girl “Zora” in From Russia with Love, and as Paula in Thunderball, plus such films as Dr. Jekyll & Sister Hyde, From a Whisper to a Scream, Prehistoric Women, etc.) is keen on the idea and agrees to fly out to Hollywood.

That’s when the fun begins.   Xaviera is a pro (in more ways than one) and she is a quick study as well.   She is seduced, but quickly sees the duplicity of the sexual and “power” advances … and arrives at the conclusion that she can play this “Hollywood” game better than the home court players.   If a movie is to be made, she’s the one who is going to make it!!

She gets help from an unlikely source, learns the craft and delivers the goods.  And, in true Hollywood fashion, a cliffhanger has Xaviera hinting at writing another book based on her new “Hollywood” experiences … and another film could follow!

The Happy Hooker Goes Hollywood is great fun … a blend of inside Hollywood deal-making combined with all the best elements of the sexploitation genre, who could ask for more!!

Bonus goodies include a newly-produced video session with actors Martine Beswick and Chris Lemmon.

 

 

 

 

 

Paramount Home Entertainment Readies 4K Ultra HD Edition Of Director Martin Scorsese's The Wolf Of Wall Street For Delivery On Dec. 14

Paramount Home Entertainment has selected Dec. 14 as the street date for a new 4K Ultra HD edition of director Martin Scorsese’s 2013 film adaptation of the Jordan Belfort tell-all novel, The Wolf of Wall Street.

Scorsese’s film was nominated Best Picture and Scorsese scored his seventh Best Director nomination (number eight would follow with The Irishman … his only win out of eight tries is for The Departed) and both Leonardo DiCaprio as Belfort and Jonah Hill would be nominated for acting Oscars.

Bonus nuggets include a trio of production featurettes — “The Wolf Pack,” “Running Wild” and “The Wolf of Wall Street Round Table.”

 

Universal Pictures Home Entertainment Tabs Oct. 19 As The Street Date For M. Night Shyamalan's Old

Auteur filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan’s latest mind-bender, Old, his film adaptation of the Sandcastle graphic novel by Pierre Oscar Levy and Frederik Peeters, will be heading home courtesy of Universal Pictures Home Entertainment as a three-SKU product offering on Oct. 19.

The ARR comes in at 88 days and domestic box office receipts currently stand at $47.7 million.

Set for release is a stand-alone DVD edition, plus Combo Packs for both the 4K Ultra HD (with Blu-ray) and Blu-ray (with DVD) formats.

A beautiful vacation resort, complete with a secluded beach, would be considered a paradise, except in the hands of M. Night Shyamalan.  Here it is a nightmare landscape, structured as a tropical “haunted house” thriller (without the house of course, just a beach), complete with a victim pool and some truly bizarre happenings.   

One by one they die, but not at the hands of an unseen stalker or some crazed serial killer.   There is no escape.   The who and the what of it will not be revealed here, but the result is Shyamalan at his best … Old is a pure horror delight!

Bonus features include deleted scenes and a quartet of featurettes — “Shyamalan Family Business,” “All the Beach is a Stage,” “Nightmares in Paradise” and “A Family in the Moment.”

 

Criterion Collection Announces Its December Film Release Calendar • Red Shoes 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack Selection On Dec. 14

The Criterion Collection announced the closing round of new film restorations for 2021 this past week.   The December slate also includes its next 4K Ultra HD release.

This would be the directing team of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s 1948 Best Picture nominee, The Red Shoes, which has been available as both DVD and Blu-ray editions from Criterion, but now gets a 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack push on Dec. 14.

Bonus features include the vintage commentary featuring film historian Ian Christie, who is joined by auteur filmmaker Martin Scorsese, actors Marius Goring (as Julian Craster in the film) and Moira Shearer (as Victoria Page), cinematographer Jack Cardiff — Oscar-winner for Black Narcissus in 1947, plus nominated for War and Peace, Sons and Lovers and Fanny) and composer Brian Easdale (won the Oscar for his work here).

Other bonuses include the 2000 documentary titled Profile of The Red Shoes … and more.

Also on the December film restoration calendar from Criterion are director Gordon Parks’ 1969 film adaption of his own semi-biographical novel, The Learning Tree — this is a new 2K film restoration — which will be available as both DVD and Blu-ray product offerings on Dec. 14.  

Arriving on Dec. 7, is director Regina King’s arthouse entry, One Night in Miami …, which was nominated for three Oscars, had a film festival run that began at the Venice Film Festival in September of last year and culminated in a one-theatre release in December … followed by a wider move during the first week of January.  Streaming on Amazon Prime followed one week later.   

No box office numbers were officially reported, but best industry estimates are that One Night in Miami … grossed right around $100,000 (on a reported $17 million production budget) … officially, the ARR comes in at 347 days. 

There will be both a Blu-ray selection and a double-disc DVD edition available from Criterion.

 

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Sets Street Dates For Escape Room: Tournament Of Champions (Oct. 05) And Don't Breathe 2 (Oct. 26)

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment made not one, but two announcements this past week relating to new theatrical releases making their transition to the home entertainment packaged media marketplace.

In street date order, we begin the release festivities with director Adam Robitel‘s Escape Room: Tournament of Champions, his follow-up to the 2016 release of Escape Room.   The street date will be Oct. 5 for both DVD and Blu-ray editions.

Escape Room: Tournament of Champions arrives with an ARR of 81 days and the current box office tally stands at $25.2 million.

SKU configuration will be both stand-alone DVD and Blu-ray selections.

Six new “rats-in-a-deadly-maze” participants realize that they have been selected for the latest “test” because each of them had survived previous gauntlets set up by the sinister Minos Corporation.   Included in the mix are Zoey (Taylor Russell) and Ben (Logan Miller) who survived the original Escape Room … can they do so again?   Catch the action on Oct. 5 to find out!!

Bonus features, which are limited to the Blu-ray SKU, include an “extended cut” of the film (an additional twenty-five minutes worth of action) and a trio of featurettes — “Go Inside the Minos Escape Rooms,” “Meet the Players” and “Director Adam Robitel on Raising the Stakes.”

The other new theatrical release from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment arriving in October is writer/director Rodo Sayagues’ Don't Breathe 2, which will be available on Oct. 26 as a three-SKU selection of home entertainment packaged media products.

The ARR is a swift-to-market 74 days (timed to hit the Halloween promotional period) and box office receipts currently stand at $30.3 mullion.

As to SKU configuration, there will be a 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack and stand-alone DVD and Blu-ray editions.

Exclusive to the 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray SKUs are commentary by filmmaker Rodo Sayagues, a never-before-seen alternate ending and three featurettes — “Friends & Filmmakers,” “Bad Man (Slang is Back)” and “Designing Deception.”
