Criterion Collection Announces Its December Film Release Calendar • Red Shoes 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack Selection On Dec. 14

The Criterion Collection announced the closing round of new film restorations for 2021 this past week.   The December slate also includes its next 4K Ultra HD release.

This would be the directing team of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger’s 1948 Best Picture nominee, The Red Shoes, which has been available as both DVD and Blu-ray editions from Criterion, but now gets a 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack push on Dec. 14.

Bonus features include the vintage commentary featuring film historian Ian Christie, who is joined by auteur filmmaker Martin Scorsese, actors Marius Goring (as Julian Craster in the film) and Moira Shearer (as Victoria Page), cinematographer Jack Cardiff — Oscar-winner for Black Narcissus in 1947, plus nominated for War and Peace, Sons and Lovers and Fanny) and composer Brian Easdale (won the Oscar for his work here).

Other bonuses include the 2000 documentary titled Profile of The Red Shoes … and more.

Also on the December film restoration calendar from Criterion are director Gordon Parks’ 1969 film adaption of his own semi-biographical novel, The Learning Tree — this is a new 2K film restoration — which will be available as both DVD and Blu-ray product offerings on Dec. 14.

Arriving on Dec. 7, is director Regina King’s arthouse entry, One Night in Miami …, which was nominated for three Oscars, had a film festival run that began at the Venice Film Festival in September of last year and culminated in a one-theatre release in December … followed by a wider move during the first week of January.  Streaming on Amazon Prime followed one week later.   

No box office numbers were officially reported, but best industry estimates are that One Night in Miami … grossed right around $100,000 (on a reported $17 million production budget) … officially, the ARR comes in at 347 days. 

There will be both a Blu-ray selection and a double-disc DVD edition available from Criterion.
