Cauldron Films Circles Nov. 22 On The Blu-ray Release Calendar For The Debut Of Director Eloy de la Iglesia’s Mixed-Genre Classic Murder In A Blue World Starring Sue Lyon

Cauldron Films, with sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has scored a major genre find with the news this past week that Eloy de la Iglesia’s 1973 (domestic 1975 theatrical release) sci-fi/serial killer gem, Murder in a Blue World.  

The street for this gorgeous Blu-ray edition will Nov. 22.  

This is a new 2K film restoration of the Spanish producer’s cut (35mm camera negative) and the film can be enjoyed with either the original Spanish-language audio track, with English subtitles, or the 1975 English-dubbed theatrical release audio track (with also features optional English subtitles).

As near as we can document, Televista released a DVD version (sources report it was a straight knock-off of the UK VHS release) back in 2009.  If that’s in your film library, it can be retired on Nov. 22.

Following in the footsteps of Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange, we have three inter-connected storylines that take place in a “future” metro area (very pastel and hip in nature).   The first features a lovely nurse by the name of Ana Vernia (played by Sue Lyon — as Lolita in Kubrick’s Lolita … and such films as Tony Rome, Four Rode Out, Evel Knievel, Crash!, The Astral Factor), who, we shall soon learn is a seductive serial killer.

The second storyline introduces us to Dr. Victor Sender (Jean Sorel — Belle de Jour, A Lizard in a Woman's Skin, The Day of the Jackal), who is a mad scientist operating under the cloak of authority … and assisted by Ana.   They have something of a “relationship,” but it’s more “professional” than amorous.

In any case, Dr. Sender is in charge of rehabilitating criminals … he experiments on the likes of Malcolm McDowell’s Alex character from A Clockwork Orange, only in a more extreme fashion.   He is indeed a mad scientist and he has human lab rats to indulge his fetishes — he will cure them, or else!!

And finally, the third leg of this sci-fi/thriller comes in the form of gang-banger “David” (just David), played by Christopher Mitchum (Chisum, Rio Lobo and Big Jake, and then off to Europe), who leads a group of thugs who like to smash up cars and do home-invasion “mischief.”  

David, during one of his “nights out,” discovers Ana’s little secret.   She picks up men, seduces them and then kills them.   And that discovery brings the three storylines together … who will be the cat and who will be the mouse in this futuristic “utopia!”

Bonus goodies include commentary from film historian Kat Ellinger (Editor-in-Chief at Diabolique Magazine), a newly-edited “vintage” video session with Chris Mitchum, the featurette titled “Dubbing in a Blue World” and an extensive stills gallery.

 

 

 

Mill Creek Entertainment Sets Nov. 08 For The DVD Debut Of Director Marco Deufemia’s Outdoor Thriller Love in Wolf Creek

Mill Creek Entertainment announced this past week that director Marco Deufemia’s outdoor thriller, Love in Wolf Creek, will be making its DVD debut on Nov. 8.

This Dove Family-approved film takes us to Wolf Creek and introduces us to Samantha Gavin (Nola Martin — A Christmas Exchange, Secret Santa), an angel, who runs the Wolf Creek Wildlife Sanctuary, but sadly, she is in need of funding to keep things going.   Her sister, Sunny (Madeline Leon), captures a ton of hits for the videos she takes of Samantha doing amazing things for the critters in her care … but as Samantha tells her, hits don’t pay the bills.  

So, Sunny goes in search of an angel on her own in the form of animal activist Oliva Baker (Paris Jefferson — as Athena in the Xena: Warrior Princess television series).  But getting Samantha together with Oliva simply may not happen as a whole series of things come into play.

The catalyst is the sudden presence of a wolf, the first to return to Wolf Creek in years.   But there is a predator (played by Nicolas Grimes) after the wolf, simply for the pleasure of the kill; a trophy hunter.  This puts Samantha on a collision course with a skilled killer ... who might just be willing to cross forbidden lines to get his trophy.

Meanwhile, in a meet-cute moment — which does not go well at all — Samantha is introduced to Mariana Spencer’s grandson, Austin (Tim Rozon — best known as Mutt Schitt from the Schitt's Creek television series).   

Mariana (played by Mary Long — Christmas at Maple Creek, 12 Dates of Christmas and as the voice for Daichi in the Beyblade series) runs the local hardware/general store (which will factor into the drama when the hunter comes calling) and she thinks that an introduction of Austin to the available Samantha is a terrific idea.

There you have it, a mismatched couple in the form of an animal do-gooder, Samantha, and the new-in-town Austin, who suddenly find themselves in an unfair fight with a trophy hunter … and they are, to put it quite brutally, in the way!  There might be more victims than just the wolf on this life-and-death hunt!!

 

 

 

 

Twilight Time Looks To Nov. 08 For The Blu-ray Launch Of Italian Filmmaker Domenico Paolella's Classic Nunsploitation Gem • The Nun And The Devil

Twilight Time, with sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has a newly-minted Blu-ray edition of Italian filmmaker Domenico Paolella's 1973 nunsploitation classic, The Nun and the Devil, lined up for a domestic launch on Nov. 8.

This is a 2K film restoration from the original 35mm camera negative.

A power struggle at a 16^th Century Italian monastery develops when the Mother Superior dies.   Three scheming nuns desire (desire, oh that’s a bad word) to take her place and go well-beyond proper conduct fitting their station to achieve the laurels of the lily pad in this proverbial pond.

Sister Lavinia (Maria Cumani Quasimodo — Vampire in Venice, Turn the Other Cheek) is the presumed heir-apparent, but both Sister Giulia (Anne Heywood — The Fox, Midas Run, The Brain) and Sister Carmela (Claudia Gravy — Marquis de Sade's Justine, Byleth: The Demon of Incest) also have their eye on the power position.

Of course, this is a nunsploitation entry, which means that there is very little in the way of dedication to the calling of the church as lesbian affairs, sex on the sly, corruption and murder are all mixed together in Paolella's The Nun and the Devil. 

Who wins out?   It might come as a bit of a shocker, but you’ll have to wait until Twilight Time’s Blu-ray debut on Nov. 08 to discover the answer to that question.

Bonus delights include commentary with film critic Kim Newman, who is joined by Italian Cinema expert Barry Forshaw (“Italian Cinema: Arthouse to Exploitation”) and a quartet of featurettes —— “Judging Luc,” “The Devil and Martine,” “Paolella Connection” and “Horny Devils: Nunsploitation Explained.”

 

 

 

Liberation Hall Selects Nov. 18 For The DVD Concert Release Of Great Women Singers: Sarah Vaughan

Liberation Hall, with sales and distribution expertise provided by MVD Entertainment Group, will be delivering a DVD edition of the Sarah Vaughan’s 1985 Stamford Center for the Arts concert home on Friday, Nov. 18.

This will be the second installment in the company’s newly-launched “Great Women Singers” line of DVD products.  

Titled simply, Great Women Singers: Sarah Vaughan, this is the first time that this classic concert, featuring an eleven-song set (a little more if you count the mid-concert “Gershwin Medley” (“But for Me,” “Our Love is Here to Stay” “Embraceable You” and Someone to Watch Over Me”) as four (but who’s counting, it’s four-time Grammy Awards-winner Sarah Vaughan!!

Backed by George Dafney on the piano, bassman Andrew Simpkins and Harold Jones on drums, Sarah Vaughan delivers “Be My Love,” “Just Friends,” “Poor Butterfly”, On a Clear Day You Can See Forever” and “To Say Goodbye” … the “Gershwin Medley” … and then tops the evening off with “East of the Sun,” “Here’s That Rainy Day,” “There will Never be Another You,” “Misty” and “Send in the Clowns.”

 

 

 

 

The Offer (Nov. 29) And Secret Headquarters (Dec. 20) Are On Their Way Home From Paramount Home Entertainment

From the studio that gave the world The Godfather, comes the event mini-series The Offer, which details Albert S. Ruddy’s experiences in getting the film from concept to reality … for his efforts, he earned the Oscar for Best Picture.

Paramount Home Entertainment announced this past week that this Leslie Greif and Michael Tolkin production will be available as DVD and Blu-ray product offerings on Nov. 29.

Miles Teller (Whiplash, The Spectacular Now) plays producer Albert S. Ruddy, with Matthew Goode as studio head, Robert Evans, Dan Fogler as director Francis Ford Coppola and Giovanni Ribisi as Mafia Don Joe Colombo.   Others in the massive cast of real-life characters include Meredith Garretson as movie star Ali MacGraw (the wife of Evans at the time) and Anthony Ippolito as Al Pacino.

Bonus features include the featurettes titled “Parallels: Art Imitates Art” and “The Offer: Sending a Message,” plus the four-part presentation of “No One Can Refuse: Making the Offer.”

In yet another streaming casualty, writer/director Henry Joost’s (with co-direction by Ariel Schulman) super-hero comedy, Secret Headquarters, starring Owen Wilson, was pulled from its early-August theatrical run and moved directly to Paramount+ for its debut.

Both DVD and Blu-ray editions will be heading home on Dec. 20.

Bonus features, which are exclusive to the Blu-ray SKU, include deleted and extended scenes, a gag reel, and four featurettes — “BFFLs,” “The Secret Headquarters,” “Panic! At the Moon Dance” and “Who is the Guard?”

 

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Moves Director Jessica M. Thompson’s The Invitation Quickly Into The Oct. 25 Release Slot To Take Advantage Of The Halloween Season

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has tabbed Oct. 25 — just in time for the Halloween viewing season — as the street date for director Jessica M. Thompson’s vampire-themed horror tale, The Invitation, starring Nathalie Emmanuel (Army of Thieves, F9: The Fast Saga, Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials) as the guest to her own, gulp, wedding!!

Planned for release are Blu-ray and DVD editions.  The ARR is right at 60 days and box office receipts passed the $25 million mark this past weekend.

Bonus features common to both home entertainment packaged media release SKUs are a trio of behind-the-scenes featurettes — “Lifting the Veil: Story,” “The Wedding Party: Cast” and “Till Death Do Us Part: Design.”   Exclusive to the Blu-ray purchasing option are deleted scenes, extended scenes, an alternate ending, outtakes and a blooper reel.

Continuing in the “bride-to-be” theme, but in a very different sense, is news from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment this past week that director P. J. Hogan’s My Best Friend’s Wedding, starring Julia Roberts, Dermot Mulroney, Cameron Diaz and Rupert Everett, will be celebrating its 25^th Anniversary on Dec. 13 with a 4K Ultra HD launch.

Bonus features include an alternated ending and twenty minutes worth of deleted scenes.   There are also four vintage featurettes — “On the Set: My Best Friend’s Wedding,” “My Best Friend’s Wedding Album,” “Wedding Do’s & Don’ts” and “Unveiled: My Best Friend’s Wedding” — and the “Say a Little Prayer for You” sing-along.
