Baseball.
When you think baseball and the movies, you of course think of Field of
Dreams, The Natural and A League
of Their Own. Throw in The Bad
News Bears, Bull Durham and Major
League as well … and one more, just to make a
marathon of it, director Frank Sebastiano’s Beer
League.
The critics — geeze, what do they know — called it “crude.” They savaged it with words like “lewd,”
“raunchy” and full of “potty humor,” but that’s the point (those are actually selling
points) … it’s Beer League! Of course all of those things are true … and
a whole lot more!
Two more words describe Beer
League come the 14th of May, “Marquee
Collection.” That’s what MVD
Entertainment Group has bestowed on DVD and Blu-ray editions of this tale about
a born loser, Artie DeVanzo (played by comedian Artie Lange — The
Bachelor, Boat Trip, Old School),
who lives with his mom, drinks way too much beer and plays softball for Ed’s
Bar and Swill.
It’s the perfect life for Artie, beer and softball …
all he needs to make it complete is a girlfriend. But when the first game of the season ends
in a brawl with the team members from Manganelli Fitness, the league imposes a
death penalty. Ed’s Bar and Swill must
win the league championship or be tossed out for good … that means beating Manganelli
Fitness, the defending champs.
Beer League
celebrates baseball clichés and that is why it belongs in the Pantheon of
baseball movies. They have a senior
citizen (Seymour Cassel), who pitches for them, whose nickname is “Dirt” (as in
“older than”), practice has never been important, but getting kicked out of the
league means they have to give it at least a try.
And when down ten to nothing in the bottom
of the ninth — with two out — in the final game of the season, it still isn’t
over!! And, DeVanzo becomes the hero in
the end and gets the girl (Cara Buono).
This is a baseball movie for fans of the game that
comes with the highs, the lows (sadly, the death of Dirt) and, of course, the
beer! Enjoy!!
Bonus features include commentary from director
Frank Sebastiano and Artie Lange, a behind-the-scenes feature, Artie on the Best Damn Sports Show and The Jimmy Kimmel Show and more.
