You’ve likely seen director Michael Wadleigh’s
Oscar-winning 1970 film, Woodstock, and
perhaps even filmmaker Ang Lee’s 2009 Cannes Film Festival Palme d'Or nominated
dramatic retelling of the Woodstock concert based on Elliot Tiber’s book, Taking
Woodstock.
Word arrived this past week from Cinema Libre that
documentary filmmaker Mick Richards’ Creating
Woodstock, an insightful examination of that
landmark gathering at Max Yasgur's farm in August of 1969, will be making its
DVD debut on July 30.
Creating Woodstock
takes a look at the history of the event and how it all came together. It is a 50th Anniversary celebration
of Woodstock and filmmaker Mick Richards has gathered interviews with the four
unlikely concert promoters — John Roberts, Joel Rosenman, Artie Kornfeld and
Michael Lang — who were the founders of Woodstock Ventures.
He then added video sessions with the production
talent that includes John Morris, Bill Belmont, Mel Lawrence and Chip Monck and
these insights and remembrances from the creative and technical individuals involved
with the four-day event were combined with sessions featuring some of the
performers, including Richie Havens, Arlo Guthrie and Leslie West.
To put the icing on cake, filmmaker Mick Richards
has assembled archival footage and recently unearthed photographs to form this
documentary “love letter” to an event that defined a generation. Creating Woodstock on
DVD on July 30 … perfectly timed to celebrate The Woodstock Music and Art Fair,
or simply “Woodstock,” at 50!!
