Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution
support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has a new 2K film restoration
(from the original 35mm interpositive) of writer/director Andrew Lane’s 1986
globe-trotting adventure, Jake Speed, set
for Blu-ray on Dec. 3.
When fiction becomes reality you get “pulp fiction”
hero Jake Speed suddenly coming to life in the form of, well … Jake Speed
(played by Wayne Crawford — Barracuda, Valley Girl, Diary of a
Hitman, etc.).
He’s sort of a bargain basement version of Indian Jones.
Jake comes to the aid of Margaret Winston (Karen
Kopins — Once Bitten, Troop Beverly Hills) in
a seedy San Pedro bar one evening and agrees to help her rescue her sister, Maureen
(Becca C. Ashley), from white slavers who kidnapped her in Paris and have taken
her to Africa (filmed on location in Zimbabwe).
So off they go, Jake Speed, his sidekick, Desmond (Dennis Christopher – Chariots
of Fire, Breaking Away) and Margaret to rescue
the damsel in distress.
No sooner do they get a line on her whereabouts,
when they are captured, certain death awaits, but Jake learns that the
mastermind behind the operation is none other than his long-time nemesis, Sid
(played with reckless abandon by none other than John Hurt) ... they escape and
the game is afoot!!
To make things worse, they have wandered into the
middle of a civil war!!! Can they
overcome Sid (really, Sid?) and his minions, rescue Maureen and escape before
the chaos of the civil war in progress overtakes them all? Jake Speed, it
literally is a “page-turn!”
Bonus goodies are a pair of new featurettes “Paperback
Wishes, Cinematic Dreams” and “The Hard Way Reads Better.”
