Sony Pictures Home Entertainment had a
stunner-of-an-announcement this past week.
Not one or two new 4K Ultra HD selections, but a six-strong collection
is being launched on June 16 under the promotional banner of Columbia
Classics 4K Ultra HD Collection, Volume 1.
This works out to a 17 disc Combo Pack presentation
— eight 4K Ultra HD discs with eight Blu-ray discs for the six feature films,
plus a bonus Blu-ray disc with extra features.
All new, first time as 4K Ultra HD product offerings
… so what are the six films from the Columbia Pictures library that are getting
the special treatment?
How about we start with the 1962 Best Picture
winner, director David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia! This four-disc presentation (two 4K Ultra
HD/two Blu-ray Combo Pack) includes a new “Unused” International Prologue and a
ton of previously released bonus features (on Blu-ray), including two
documentaries, In Love with the Desert and Making of
Lawrence of Arabia.
The other Best Picture winner getting the
double/double disc treatment is director Richard Attenborough’s 1982 biopic
starring Ben Kingsley, Gandhi.
The other four films — again, all being released for
the first time on the 4K Ultra HD format — are A League
of Their Own, Mr. Smith
Goes to Washington, Jerry
Maguire and Dr.
Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb.
