Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, announced a newly-minted Blu-ray edition of Chan-wook Park’s 2000 suspense-thriller, JSA: Joint Security Area. The street date is Jan. 19.
Why is ROK Army Sergeant Lee Soo-hyeok (Byung-hun Lee — A Bittersweet Life, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, I Saw the Devil, etc.) crossing the DMZ from the North Korean side. All hell is about to break loose between North and South Korea over his “visit” to a North Korean border facility … two North Korean soldiers are dead!!
To defuse the situation, “neutral” investigators are brought in, headed by Korean-born, Swiss Army Major Sophie Jean (Lee Young-ae — Lady Vengeance). Nothing is as it seems, including, as events unfold, the “neutral” nature of the investigator. There are conflicting stories … different versions of what took place.
Through a series of flashbacks we slowly move towards the truth of what happened that evening … an evening on the DMZ that almost triggered a war.
Bonus goodies include commentary from writer and film critic Simon Ward, a newly-prepared video session with Asian cinema expert Jasper Sharp and two vintage featurettes — “The JSA Story” and The Making of Joint Security Area.’
JSA: Joint Security Area is presented in Korean with optional English subtitles.
