Mill Creek Entertainment looks to Aug. 17 as the street date for a Blu-ray edition of director Bryan Spicer’s Christmas of 1997 comedy, For Richer or Poorer, starring Tim Allen and Kirstie Alley as the bickering Sextons, New York City real estate developers who have been set-up by their accountant for fraud and are now on the run.
Indeed, if it were not for the handy work of their accountant, Bob (Wayne Knight), who has been gleefully filing false tax returns and pilfering the estate of Brad and Caroline Sexton, they would be heading to the divorce court. The Sextons are miserable and want to call it quits, but when the IRS comes knocking — and looking for five million in unpaid taxes — they suddenly find themselves with other plans.
Through a series of often hilarious events, Brad and Caroline end up hiding out in Amish country, passing themselves off as the distant cousins of Samuel Yoder (Jay O. Sanders) and his wife, Levinia (Megan Cavanagh). Meanwhile, agents from IRS continue their manhunt.
For Richer or Poorer works so well because of the comedic timing of both Allen and Alley, who get to play as wealthy and snooty in an environment where those attributes don’t quite fit in. In a nice twist, their time away from New York City ends paying huge dividends!!
