MVD Entertainment Group Bestows "Rewind Collection" Status On Filmmaker Michael Cooney's Jack Frost And Jack Frost 2 For Release As DVD And Blu-ray Product Offerings On Dec. 14

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas!!

It was “season’s greetings” from MVD Entertainment Group this past week as they announced not one, but two new “Rewind Collection” Blu-ray releases that have a certain “seasonal” theme to them.

Writer/director Michael Cooney’s Jack Frost has snow, the setting is the Christmas-season in Colorado and there is a snowman by the name of Jack Frost (played by Scott MacDonald — Star Trek: Enterprise), who just happens to be a serial killer … but not to worry, he is on his way to death row!!

This 2K scan from the original 35mm vault materials, checks off all the boxes as a Christmas-season release, it’s just not in the same vein as say, It’s a Wonderful Life, or Home Alone, or Miracle on 34th Street, but more in the cinematic pew of Black Christmas, Santa Claws and Silent Night, Bloody Night.

The street date for this Blu-ray “Rewind Collection” edition of Jack Frost will be on Dec. 14, which makes it a Christmas-season release by definition.   Perfect.   Holiday cheer and good tidings … and a bloody good time for genre fans.

Right off the bat, Jack Frost, a serial killer, is captured by Sheriff Sam Tiler (Christopher Allport — To Live and Die in L.A., Dead & Buried) and convicted of killing over thirty people and, as we pick up the action, he is being transported to death row.   But, as “luck” would have it, he’s killed in a crash with a tanker containing chemicals that reduce poor Jack to a pile of goo, which is quickly absorbed by the snow.   The cost of executing him has been taken care of by a freak accident.

Not so fast.   Jack Frost mutates into a snowman — back from the dead — and goes on a gleeful rampage of murder, including the rape of a young woman, who is played by future-American Pie star, Shannon Elizabeth (you don’t ask too many questions about how a snowman is capable of such a thing) … this creature appears to be unstoppable, until a very “unique” solution is hit upon!!

Jack Frost is one of those over-the-top horror films that is both fun and gruesome at the same time.

Bonus features include an introduction by filmmaker Michael Cooney, commentary by Cooney and a second, newly-prepared, commentary option featuring “Hack the Movies” Tony Piluso, Newt Wallen and Christal Quin.

There is also a new video session with MacDonald and two vintage video sessions with actor Scott MacDonald and Dean Lent, the director of photography.

So, what is the second “Rewind Collection” Blu-ray heading home from MVD Entertainment Group on Dec. 14?   Of course, it is the sequel to Jack Frost, writer/director Michael Cooney’s Jack Frost 2: Revenge of the Mutant Killer Snowman!!

He’s back and deadlier than ever!   And, he can’t be melted.   Oh my!!

Bonus features for this snowman terror delight include commentary from filmmaker Michael Cooney and the “Hack the Movies” gang are back with a commentary of their own.  There are also video sessions and behind-the-scenes featurette.

Also, DVD editions of Jack Frost and Jack Frost 2: Revenge of the Mutant Killer Snowman will also be available on Dec. 14 from MVD Entertainment Group.
