Full Moon Features, with sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has a December debut — both on Blu-ray and DVD — of writer/director Fred Olen Ray’s latest horror/sci-fi entry … and it has nothing to do with Christmas or the Christmas season.
None of that Black Christmas, Silent Night, Deadly Night, Krampus or Gremlins sort of season-greetings horror-themed entertainment, but rather a more “traditional” mad-scientist tale, Piranha Women!! The perfect stocking-stuffer and available in time for Christmas-season viewing fun on Dec. 13.
Piranha Women, like Tarantula, or Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, or The Corpse Vanishes (it is a long, long list of mad scientist film treats), starts off with the best of intentions (solve hunger, discover this, fix that, etc.) as Dr. Mark Sinclair (Shary Nassimi — L.A. Nights, Private Number, Sniper: Special Ops), of the prestigious Institute of Morphological Medicine, is working hard on a cure for cancer. His plan, combine the DNA of piranha with human DNA … what could possibly go wrong with that?
Plenty. Of course, plenty as we soon discover when detectives Shayne (Richard Gabai — The Curse of the Komodo, Thirteen Erotic Ghosts, Dinosaur Island, etc.) and Rogers (Michael Gaglio — a running gag as “The Bartender” in such films as The Amityville Harvest, The Amityville Moon, Amityville Uprising and most recently as “The Bartender” in Attack of the 50 Foot CamGirl) start working a series of mysterious murders. Random men — no seeming connection — are being found ripped to shreds.
Meanwhile, back at the lab, dying cancer patient Lexi (Sof Puchley), with the reluctant encouragement of her boyfriend, Richard (Bobby Rice), makes her way to the Institute of Morphological Medicine and is convinced by Dr. Sinclair to “take the cure.” What does she have to lose? She’s dying!
The little jab of magic serum works like a charm. Lexi came in with a grey, sickly look to her, but the next morning she awakes radiant, but with one little, minor — not even worth mentioning — side effect to her miracle cure. She’s become seductive, sexy … a man magnet.
But that’s not the only thing, she’s developed piranha teeth, piranha breasts (don’t ask) and a ravenous appetite for flesh. Her newly developed seductive powers are the bait and men are drawn to her like honey attracts flies.
Sinclair is well-aware of the side effects and has set up a little “group home” where other cancer patients that he has cured spend their days in bikinis … it’s like a little “school” of piranha women (Carrie Overgaard, Keep Chambers, Cody Renee Cameron) who are out there seducing and munching-away on their very willing victims. Richard gets suspicious and doesn’t buy Sinclair’s story that this is for Lexi’s own good … and sets out to find her!!
Dec. 13, Piranha Women from Full Moon Features on both Blu-ray and DVD to discover if Richard finds Lexi (what happens with that) and if our hard-at-work detectives ever solve the case!
