The Criterion Collection announced its February slate of new film restorations that will be available as home entertainment packaged media release during the month of February.
Leading the way — and yes, that is always a subjective call — is a new 4K film restoration of director Franco Zeffierelli’s 1968 Best Picture-nominee, Romeo and Juliet, starring then-unknown actors Leonard Whiting and Olivia Hussey (just 15 at the time of the filming).
Both DVD and Blu-ray editions will be available on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14 … which, somehow, seems appropriate.
Bonus features include video sessions with Olivia Hussey (circa 1967) and Leonard Whiting (circa 2016), plus and except from the 2018 documentary titled Franco Zeffirelli: Directing from Life.
Also on the February release slate from Criterion is director Krzysztof Kieślowski’s early-90s film trilogy, Three Colors, which will arrive on Feb. 7 as full selection of home entertainment package media products — 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray (six-disc) Combo Pack, Blu-ray (3 discs) and DVD (4 discs) sets. All three films in the collection Blue (1993), White (1994) and Red (1994) are new 4K film restorations.
Bonus features include selected-scene commentary with Juliette Binoche (Blue), three short films from Kieślowski — The Tram, Seven Women of Different Ages and Talking Heads — a series of video sessions with cast, crew and film critics, behind-the-scenes for White and Red and more.
Also getting a full-spread launch on Feb. 21 is a 4K film restoration of the Director’s Cut of director Richard Linklater’s 1993 film release of Dazed and Confused. Bonus features include commentary by Linklater.
Rounding-out Criterion’s February release calendar — both streeting on Feb. 28 — are the two-film collection titled Two Films by Marguerite Duras, featuring India Song and Baxter, Vera Baxter (double-disc Blu-ray and DVD purchasing options) and director Robert Townsend’s 1983 satirical comedy, Hollywood Shuffle (Blu-ray only).
