Every now and then a film jumps up and scores theatrically well beyond expectations. Such is the case with director Elizabeth Banks’ Cocaine Bear, a wacky tale about a black bear way back in the winter of 1985 who happened upon an abandoned load of cocaine (some 75 pounds, give or take) … and ate it all!!
The story went viral during the film’s production and a baked-in audience was eager to see it theatrically, so instead of a direct to streaming move, it was release theatrically and exceeded all expectations. The domestic box office haul was an astonishing $63.8 million.
Universal Pictures Home Entertainment announced this past week that Cocaine Bear will be arriving home as both DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack product offerings on Apr. 18. Yes, you read that right, Apr. 18.
For the record, the ARR works out to just 53 days. That’s way too quick … and the digital window has already generated numerous DVD and Blu-ray “helper” editions.
Bonus features include commentary from actor-turned-filmmaker Elizabeth Banks (Pitch Perfect 2, Charlie’s Angels), who is joined by co-producer Max Handelman (Surrogates, Pitch Perfect, Pitch Perfect 2, Pitch Perfect 3). Additional bonus nuggets include an alternate ending, deleted and extended scenes, a gag reel and a trio of featurettes — “All Roads Lead to Cokey: The Making of Cocaine Bear,” UnBEARable Bloodbath: Dissecting the Kills” and “Doing Lines.”
