Rewind Collection Status For the Nov. 23 DVD And Blu-ray Rollout Of MVD Entertainment Group's Final Justice

They did it! MVD Entertainment Group announced this past week that the newest addition to their popular “Rewind Collection” promotional banner will be none other than writer/director Greydon Clark’s 1984 action tale, Final Justice, starring Joe Don Baker.

The street date for the Blu-ray debut (there will also be a DVD buying option) has a long-lead of Nov. 23, which gives MVD plenty of time to promote this “cult classic.”

The film gained famed when Mystery Science Theatre 3000 showcased it in one of their early broadcasts (circa 1999) and, as a result, it stuck with genre fans. If not for MST3K, this rare action gem might have languished in obscurity, but in the 20 years since it was unearthed the fame of Joe Don Baker starring as lawman Thomas Jefferson Geronimo, adrift on the island of Malta in search of an escaped Mafia assassin, has only grown and grown.

And now, on Nov. 23 it will be a “Rewind Collection” Blu-ray release from MVD Entertainment Group. Toss that 1984 Avid VHS in the dumpster or if you have one of those gawdawful NuTech (aka: Digital Versatile Disc; aka: DVD, Ltd.) DVDs, toss that too … the Blu-ray is sweet justice to an epic journey from obscurity to cult status.

Greydon Clark, who got his start with prolific “B-movie” filmmaker Al Adamson, by providing the script for his 1969 biker flick, Satan’s Sadists (he also played the part of “Acid”) … learned quickly and in the years that followed he gained genre-fan status with such gems as Black Shampoo, Satan’s Cheerleaders, Without Warning, Joysticks, Skinheads … and more.

The details are a little sketchy, but he got a chance to shoot a film on the island of Malta with Walking Tall’s Joe Don Baker and so they took full advantage of it. This wasn’t their first rodeo together as Baker had co-starred with Stella Stevens and George Kennedy in Greydon Clark’s Wacko in 1982 and then followed that up with Joysticks in 1983.

In the film’s set-up, we find two Mafia assassins, Joe (Venantino Venantini) and Tony (Venantino Venantini) wrapping up an assignment when they get involved in an auto accident and then they bungle an attempt to steal a police car to make their getaway. During the gun battle that ensues, the local sheriff is killed (a cameo by none other than Greydon Clark) and his deputy (Baker) kills Tony and takes the ruthless Joe prisoner.

Normally, that would be the end of the involvement of a border town deputy sheriff, but though some clever scriptwriting, lawman Thomas Jefferson Geronimo is given the task of escorting the killer back to Italy to face justice there. The passenger jet is sabotaged and forced to making an emergency landing in Malta, where, guess what, Geronimo’s prisoner escapes.

The rest of the film is Thomas Jefferson Geronimo’s dogged pursuit of the escapee, which is thwarted at every turn … but he’s relentless and he will get the “final justice.”

Bonus features, and this for fans is where the real action is, includes the newly-prepared feature-length production of The Making of Final Justice (clocking in at 74 minutes), which features filmmaker Greydon Clark, editor Larry Bock and cinematographer Nicholas Josef von Sternberg, plus there is commentary from Tony Piluso, Newt Wallen and Crystal Quin of “Hack the Movies.”

Mill Creek Entertainment Sets Sept. 14 For The DVD Release Of The Ultraman: The Complete Series

Mill Creek Entertainment has been releasing entire live-action Ultraman series from the vast Tsuburaya Productions Co., Ltd library (five-decades worth of programming) since October of 2019. On Sept. 14, they take a break from the live-action feature films and multi-episode live-action collections to introduce one of Tsuburaya’s animated adventures inspired by Ultraman characters.

Titled The Ultraman: The Complete Series, it will be available as six-disc DVD collection and features all 50 episodes from the show’s 1979/80 broadcast season. The series is something of a hybrid in that it is considered a cross between standard animation and traditional Japanese anime.

The series revolves around a series of mysterious events that catch the Earth Defense Force off guard when monsters (Kaiju) suddenly appear out of nowhere. Standing against this onslaught is Chōichirō Hikari (voiced by Kei Tomiyama), who is secretly bonded with Ultraman Joneus … he keeps the secret from other members of the Science Guard, but it becomes more and more difficult, especially after he “dies” fighting the Spirit Parasite.

The entire animated series is present in Japanese with English subtitles.

Also added to the release calendar this past week by Mill Creek Entertainment is another one of their popular Blu-ray double-features.

On Oct. 5, fans of Vince Vaughn will be pleased to see the release of the Vince Vaughn Double Feature Blu-ray, which includes both director Peyton Reed’s 2006 smash comedy, The Break-Up, teaming Vaughn with Jennifer Aniston as well as director Ron Howard’s buddy comedy from 2011, The Dilemma, which features Vince Vaughn, Kevin James, Jennifer Connelly and Winona Ryder.

Vinegar Syndrome Tabs Aug. 31 For The Blu-ray Release Of Forgotten Gialli Volume Two

For years it was the Spaghetti Westerns from Italy and Spain that got the attention of genre-fans and film buffs. But of late, another uniquely Italian group films have bubbled to the forefront of the home entertainment packaged media collector’s world … and that would be Giallo, those thrillers and mysteries with a blood-red edge to them.

The latest news from Vinegar Syndrome will certainly get the attention of giallo fans as Aug. 31 has been designated the street date for the three-film collection on Blu-ray titled Forgotten Gialli, Volume Two.

So without further ado, let’s get to the golden treasures that await fans at the end of August.

There will be a new 2K film restoration from the original 35mm camera negative for director William Rose’s 1974 film release of The Girl in Room 2A, which caught the attention of Joseph Brenner Associates, who picked it up for domestic theatrical distribution during the summer of that year. Vinegar Syndrome has both the English-dubbed theatrical track, as well as the original Italian-language track included here.

The film itself has one-foot in the horror camp (a serial killer murdering women) and the giallo camp, the mystery of why paroled young women are “vanishing” from a halfway house run by the kindly Mrs. Grant (Giovanna Galletti — Kill, Baby... Kill!, The Naked and the Wicked, Rome, Open City).

Which brings us to the latest arrival, Margaret (Daniela Giordano — The 5-Man Army, Your Vice Is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key, Have a Good Funeral, My Friend ... Sartana Will Pay), who did a short jolt in women’s prison for being in possession of marijuana. She soon discovers that Mrs. Grant has a creepy son, Frank (Angelo Infanti), whose “work room” gives off bad vibes, and she meets Jack (John Scanlon), who is trying to find out what happened to his sister, a former “guest” at Mrs. Grant’s halfway house.

The giallo elements are the mystery and Margaret’s detective work … the rest is pure horror. Bonus features included with The Girl in Room 2A are a vintage video session with actress Daniela Giordano and an audio “essay” with film historian Rachael Nisbet.

Next up is a new 2K film restoration (from the 35mm original negative) of director Ferdinando Merighi’s 1972 film, The French Sex Murders, which found its way to the domestic theatrical arena in 1976 as a dubbed release … and yes, Vinegar Syndrome has both the both the Italian and the English-dubbed soundtracks.

There’s an opening twist that sets up what follows. Antoine Gottvalles (Peter Martell) is a jewel thief with a nasty temper, which is broad front and center when he visits his favorite hooker at Madame Collette's brothel and proceeds to beat her to death. He’s quickly convicted of the crime and sentenced to death, but manages an ill-fated getaway that leads to his horrific death in an auto accident.

Soon, Madame Collette (Anita Ekberg) is also murdered, which raises the interest of Inspector Fontaine, played by none other than Robert Sacchi, who made a career of being the spitting image of Humphrey Bogart, including starring in director Robert Day’s The Man with Bogart's Face.

More of Madame Collette’s ladies of the night die bloody deaths and Inspector Fontaine is hard-pressed to bring the killer to justice … but he prevails, despite the brothel being emptied-out of its talent!!

Bonus features here include a vintage commentary option with Kat Ellinger and Samm Dieghan, plus the featurette titled “The Wild, Wild World of Dick Randall.”

Rounding out the Aug. 31 Forgotten Gialli, Volume Two Blu-ray collection from Vinegar Syndrome is the 4K film restoration (35mm negative) of director Tonino Valerii’s 1972 film release of My Dear Killer, starring George Hilton, who is out to investigate a brutal murder … a pure giallo mystery.

Bonus features include the original Italian-language track, plus there is an English-dubbed track as an option, the featurette titled “Innocence Lost” and a vintage video session with George Hilton and filmmaker Tonino Valerii.

All three films in the collection include English subtitles.

Arrow Video Preps 4K Ultra HD Edition Of Dario Argento's Deep Red For Delivery On Oct. 26

Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has a new double-disc 4K Ultra HD edition of Dario Argento’s 1975 (1976 for the domestic market) giallo/horror tale, Deep Red, ready for delivery to genre fans on Oct. 26.

Arrow has gone the extra mile with this package. Not only is the original 127-minute Italian language version getting a new 4K film restoration (from the film’s original camera negative), but the English-dubbed “export” edition (US theatrical release) is also getting the same 4K treatment.

David Hemmings (Blow-Up, Some People, Camelot, Barbarella, etc.) stars as Marcus Daly, a musician, who is a witness to a murder that takes place in a nearby apartment … he is too late to help the victim.

What is interesting in the way that Argento structured the lead up to this pivotal point, is that he has an extended sequence to open the film where the murder victim, Helga Ulmann (Macha Méril — Belle de Jour, Last Stop on the Night Train), is introduced during a symposium on parapsychology. She is a psychic, who suddenly has a very disturbing “vision” and can’t continue.

The first reaction is that you “think” the story is going to be about her and the visions she is having, but she’s hacked to death in the apartment wwith a meat cleaver and the story’s focus shifts to the witness, Marcus.

At Helga’s funeral Marcus meets Professor Giordani (Glauco Mauri), who was chairing the parapsychology event. Later, Marcus describes an odd encounter and the professor is able to connect the dots, which sets Marcus on the path of being an amateur sleuth.

Joining him is the reporter, Gianna Brezzi (Daria Nicolodi — Shock, Inferno, Tenebrae), who snapped a photograph of Marcus at Helga’s apartment and in doing so put a public face (and target) to the witness of the murder. More murders follow, Gianna is attacked and her attacker, the suspected killer, dies a horrible death (hit by a truck) … but there’s a twist. Of course, there’s a twist!!

Bonus features, in addition to having both viewing options, are two commentary tracks on the Italian-language presentation of Deep Red — one is a vintage commentary with Thomas Rostock, an Argent expert, and the second is newly-minted featuring critics Troy Howarth and Nathaniel Thompson.

Also included on the disc featuring the Italian-language presentation of the film are “nearly three hours” worth of newly prepared video sessions with members of the cast and crew.

On the companion disc, featuring the domestic English-dubbed version of the film, are director Michael Mackenzie’s film, Profondo Giallo, and a series of vintage video sessions with Dario Argento, Daria Nicolodi, Claudio Simonetti and Luigi Cozzi.

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment announced this past week that director Stanley Kubrick’s Christmas-season of 1971 film adaptation of Anthony Burgess’ 1962 dystopian novel, A Clockwork Orange, will be released as a 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack edition on Sept. 21.

The film made Malcolm McDowell a star — up until that point he had done some nice “arthouse” films, director Lindsay Anderson’s If …, Joseph Losey’s Figures in a Landscape and Bryan Forbes’ Long Ago, Tomorrow — but his performance as Alex, the leader of his “droogs” band of robbers and rapists took him to the next level.

But it almost didn’t happen. Burgess sold the film rights to his book for a pittance, which became a vehicle for the Rolling Stones Mick Jagger, with Ken Russell set to direct. It didn’t happen … it would have certainly been a very different film.

When the film hit theatres during the Christmas season of 1971 the film critics were mixed and audiences didn’t really discover the film until much later. Now, like many of Kubrick’s films (he did surprisingly few during his almost 50-year career as a filmmaker), A Clockwork Orange is considered one of the great films of the 20^th Century.

Bonus features are included on the accompanying Blu-ray disc and include commentary by Malcolm McDowell and Nick Redman, director Paul Joyce’s 2000 documentary titled Still Tickin: The Return of A Clockwork Orange, and a quartet of vintage featurettes — “Great Bolshy Yarblockos! Making A Clockwork Orange,” “Turning Like Clockwork,” “Malcolm McDowell Looks Back” and “O Lucky Malcolm!”

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment Picks Oct. 12 As The Street Date For The 4K Ultra HD/ Blu-ray Combo Pack Release Of The Guns Of Navarone

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has just added an anniversary celebration to its 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack release calendar with news this past week that director J. Lee Thompson’s 1961 film adaptation of Alistair MacLean’s 1957 World War II thriller, The Guns of Navarone, will be celebrating its 60^th Anniversary on Oct. 12.

This Best Picture nominee (losing out to West Side Story) is getting a new 4K film restoration from the original camera negative.

The release will be a 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack, with the vintage bonus features included on the Blu-ray disc. Counted among these goodies are commentary by J. Lee Thompson, a second commentary option by film historian Stephen J. Rubin and a collection of vintage featurettes.
