Blu-ray And DVD Formats In 2022 Are On A Pace To Smash All Annual SKU-Count Records Based End Of August (8 Months) Release Patterns

You turn on the news and the local weather report comes on … the time the sun rises and sets, the tides, the wind direction, the temperature range are all predicted.  Oh sure, a degree off here or there, a little more or less rain than expected, but it’s pretty-much ball park, day in and day out.

The same, believe it or not, holds true for the home entertainment packaged media marketplace.   For example, from 2006 thought 2021 — a period of 16 years — the average number of DVDs released at the 35-week mark (end of August … 8 months of 12 months) as a percentage of the entire year total has averaged out to 65.84 percent.   Eight of Twelve comes out to 66.7 percent … maybe a few more titles at Christmas and a few less during summer, but that’s damn close and pretty consistent.   Year-in and year-out.

Sure, it bounces around from a low side of 61.26 percent to a high side of 69.97 percent, but when you average out the past 16 years you get 65.84 percent.

This year — 2022 — if that percentage holds, we will see a mind-blowing count of 19,545 new DVD releases.   Last year was a new record of 16,090, eclipsing the 2006 mark of 15,234.

2006 was the high-water mark as the Blu-ray format was launched and the DVD counts began drifting lower as the Blu-ray format expanded its consumer reach.

By 2016, there were just 10,888 new DVD releases recorded.   So how on earth did we get to a new forecast record of 19,545 for this year?

It is a combination of events.   The rise of DVD on demand (MOD) has been the driving force in terms of SKU counts.  The “flip” took place in 2017, when, for the first time MOD DVD releases surpassed replicated DVD manufactured releases.   That trend is not slowing down.

That accounts for the “software” that is driving the SKU-counts, but it goes deeper than just the ease of manufacturing the product.  The studios, which own the vast film libraries from the beginning of the sound era to the present day, have lost their focus on this very valuable asset.   Numerous online entrepreneurs have essentially declared all theatrical releases from the 1930s, 40s, 50s and 60s as now being in the public domain … and no one is challenging that.

Another major driver is sports.   Virtually every high school sporting event is videotaped now.   Baseball, football, soccer, volleyball … you name it, and it is likely that there is tape of the game.   With the rise of DVD MOD, it was only a matter of time before these events would become an organized money-maker.   The numbers for each event are certainly small, but there are so many of them … it adds up.

There are major distributors in this area, which drive seasonal SKU-counts, but there are also local broadband networks that have discovered a market for what they have produced/telecast on their local access channels.  They take DVD MOD orders for the games (sure, you can watch it on YouTube or Vimeo, but if you want a hard copy, just hit the local website’s online store).   Think about it, there are no production costs … kids take the field (the court, the rink, etc.) and play out a random event where no two games will be the same.   Parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins … there’s your market.

Once these “micro” broadcasters discovered that money could be made from local sports, why not local concerts, the Fourth of July parade, local high school graduations … hey, what about selling copies (DVD on-demand) of last night’s city council meeting?   Again, no production costs … it’s just there on video.

While the “Hollywood” studios have all but given up on the DVD format (just 268 DVD product offerings for the first eight months of 2022 … that’s a 2.08 percent market share; a blip), those that have found money-making uses for the format have expanded exponentially to fill that void.

Add in your old standbys of Religion and Special Interest and you can certainly see how the SKU-counts have taken off since the bottom was reached in 2016.

And what of Blu-ray?   Once established, the predictive nature of full year versus eight-months followed the same pattern as DVD, with a little more tilt towards the last four months of the year.   Instead of a “normal” distribution of 66.7 percent (eight months of twelve), Blu-ray runs a little cold at 63.31 percent.

Based on the first eight months of release activity, the Blu-ray format will also have a mind-blowing banner release year.   At the eight-month mark there have been 3,556 new releases, which equates-out to a projected year-end total of 5,617.

That’s a 20.32 percent jump over last year’s record of 4,668, which in turn was a whopping 43.90 percent rise over the 2020 final count of 3,244 new Blu-ray SKUs.

What is driving this explosive growth?  In a word, streaming (and not in a good way).

Multiple online entrepreneurs are being served-up pristine hi-def masters of both series and feature film programming from such platforms as Netflix, Amazon Prime, The Peacock, Disney +, Paramount +, HBO Max and others … and then they are grinding them out on Blu-ray in record numbers.

It has become clear that studio staffing is simply not geared to handle the volume of new Blu-ray releases being pilfered from their various streaming services.   You reach out to them and alert them, but all you get are crickets.  The entire new-to-Blu-ray release list for each week is published in this report (and online as well) … it is public, for all to see, again crickets.

Piracy is a huge source of the sharp rise in Blu-ray product offerings, but it is not the only source.   The same sports and community-based entities that have driven SKU counts for the DVD format have tumbled to the fact that Blu-ray MOD is just as easy to replicate on demand, and it gives them greater bandwidth.

Some of these sources are charging a premium for a Blu-ray versus a DVD item (we will sell you whatever you wish), some not, some have switched completely to Blu-ray (again, greater bandwidth).   The rapid increase in SKU counts reflects this ... and certainly more will join the party.

Last year, 2021, Blu-ray MOD releases finally overtook replicated Blu-ray for the first time … so far this year Blu-ray MOD releases are outpacing traditional replicated Blu-ray SKUs by nearly two-to-one.

The studios, for the first time, have seen their share count for new Blu-ray product offerings drop below ten percent (8.13 percent through for the first eight months of 2022).   It has fallen to independents like Arrow Video, Synapse Films, Severin Films, MVD Entertainment Group, Mill Creek Entertainment, The Film Detective, Kino Lorber, Shout! Factory and, of course, The Criterion Collection (among others) to pick up the slack for Blu-ray film library product offerings, which use to be a mainstay for the studios.   Streaming is their focus now.

In summary, 2022 is on pace to smash all previous new title release records.   And, there is nothing to indicate that this rapid rise in home entertainment package media releases will be slowing down anytime soon.   20,000 new DVD releases for 2022 is not out of reach … to put that into some context, it took from 1997 to late 2002 (five-and-a-half years) to generate a matching total of 20,000 DVD titles in release (we are going to see that in just 12 months this year)!

On the Blu-ray side of the ledger, 5,617 are projected based on trends through the first eight months.   It also took five-and-a-half years to get to the same total for the Blu-ray format … whew, what a ride.

Writer/Director Fred Olen Ray's Piranha Women Available On Blu-ray And DVD On Dec. 13 From Full Moon Features

Full Moon Features, with sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has a December debut — both on Blu-ray and DVD — of writer/director Fred Olen Ray’s latest horror/sci-fi entry … and it has nothing to do with Christmas or the Christmas season.

None of that Black Christmas, Silent Night, Deadly Night, Krampus or Gremlins sort of season-greetings horror-themed entertainment, but rather a more “traditional” mad-scientist tale, Piranha Women!!  The perfect stocking-stuffer and available in time for Christmas-season viewing fun on Dec. 13.

Piranha Women, like Tarantula, or Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, or The Corpse Vanishes (it is a long, long list of mad scientist film treats), starts off with the best of intentions (solve hunger, discover this, fix that, etc.) as Dr. Mark Sinclair (Shary Nassimi — L.A. Nights, Private Number, Sniper: Special Ops), of the prestigious Institute of Morphological Medicine, is working hard on a cure for cancer.   His plan, combine the DNA of piranha with human DNA … what could possibly go wrong with that?

Plenty.  Of course, plenty as we soon discover when detectives Shayne (Richard Gabai — The Curse of the Komodo, Thirteen Erotic Ghosts, Dinosaur Island, etc.) and Rogers (Michael Gaglio — a running gag as “The Bartender” in such films as The Amityville Harvest, The Amityville Moon, Amityville Uprising and most recently as “The Bartender” in Attack of the 50 Foot CamGirl) start working a series of mysterious murders.   Random men — no seeming connection — are being found ripped to shreds.

Meanwhile, back at the lab, dying cancer patient Lexi (Sof Puchley), with the reluctant encouragement of her boyfriend, Richard (Bobby Rice), makes her way to the Institute of Morphological Medicine and is convinced by Dr. Sinclair to “take the cure.”   What does she have to lose?   She’s dying!

The little jab of magic serum works like a charm.   Lexi came in with a grey, sickly look to her, but the next morning she awakes radiant, but with one little, minor — not even worth mentioning — side effect to her miracle cure.  She’s become seductive, sexy … a man magnet.

But that’s not the only thing, she’s developed piranha teeth, piranha breasts (don’t ask) and a ravenous appetite for flesh.   Her newly developed seductive powers are the bait and men are drawn to her like honey attracts flies.

Sinclair is well-aware of the side effects and has set up a little “group home” where other cancer patients that he has cured spend their days in bikinis … it’s like a little “school” of piranha women (Carrie Overgaard, Keep Chambers, Cody Renee Cameron) who are out there seducing and munching-away on their very willing victims.    Richard gets suspicious and doesn’t buy Sinclair’s story that this is for Lexi’s own good … and sets out to find her!!

Dec. 13, Piranha Women from Full Moon Features on both Blu-ray and DVD to discover if Richard finds Lexi (what happens with that) and if our hard-at-work detectives ever solve the case!

Mill Creek Entertainment Preps The Blu-ray And DVD Debut Of Writer/Director Justin Lee's The Most Dangerous Game For Delivery On Nov. 08

Mill Creek Entertainment announced this past week that writer/director Justin Lee’s latest film adaptation of Richard Connell’s 1924 short story, The Most Dangerous Game, will be heading home as both Blu-ray and DVD product offerings on Nov. 8.

Connell’s short story was originally adapted for the screen in 1932, starring Fay Wray and Joel McCrea … this version from Lee is every bit as suspenseful as Lee’s adaption has added some nice tweaks to the original story.

In the days following World War II, big-game hunter Marcus Rainsford (played by Judd Nelson) hits upon the therapeutic idea of having his combat-weary sniper son, Sanger (Chris 'C.T.' Tamburello — Habitual), go with him on a trip to Alaska to hunt Grizzly Bears.   Sanger, who is having flashback of his days in the field, reluctantly goes along with the plan.

During their journey north on an inner-island steamer there is a “tragic accident” and the steamer mysteriously explodes … Marcus, Sanger and their fellow hunter, Rex Alan (Randy Charach) manage to make it ashore.  Soon, they hear gunshots and realize that people are around, they will be saved and it will be just a matter of time before they can find their way back to civilization.

Being experienced in the woods, it doesn’t take the trio long to find the source of the activity, which turns out to be Baron Von Wolf (Casper Van Dien) and his crazed-looking “assistant,” Ivan (Keven Porter).   At first, Baron Von Wolf seems like a nice enough chap, the owner of the island they are on, who offers them shelter, food and even suggests that they go on with their original hunting plans.

Things, however, take a dramatic turn when Von Wolf reveals that his island is actually a private reserve where he hunts humans, he even shares a few of his skull-trophies.   Before Marcus, Sanger and Rex can come to terms with what their host has just told them, Von Wolf murders Sanger’s father and the ever-obedient Ivan disposes of Rex.

Sanger, now a prisoner, is told by his not-so-gracious host that he will be given some survival gear, a hunting knife (even tigers have teeth) and a three-hour head start … and then the hunt will be on.   Oh, yes, one more thing, you will have two cupcake companions with you, Mary (Elissa Dowling — Girl on the Third Floor, The Electric Man, Axeman at Cutters Creek) and her brother Quin (Edward Finlay — 11^th Hour Cleaning, Final Kill, Hellblazers) … do with them as you will.

The hunt is on.  Who will survive … will Von Wolf have a trio of new skulls for his collection?    And what of the mysterious Benjamin Colt (played by Tom Berenger)?  Sanger encounters him during his evasion of the hunters … he claims that he has remained hidden from Von Wolf, but is he all that he seems to be?

For these answers and more, Mill Creek Entertainment’s The Most Dangerous Game on either Blu-ray or DVD on Nov. 8.

Wild Eye Releasing Looks To Nov. 22 For The Blu-ray And DVD Debut Of Writer/Director Kurtis Spieler's The Dead Girl in Apartment 03

Wild Eye Releasing, with sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has locked into Nov. 22 for the Blu-ray and DVD rollout of writer/director Kurtis Spieler’s mixed-genre thriller, The Dead Girl in Apartment 03.

Part horror tale, part mystery, part suspense-thriller, we get introduced to Laura (Laura Dooling — Loons) as she is distracted by something.   Not knowing quite what it is, she dumps her ear-buds and goes to investigate … maybe it was a package delivered, something, but not what she would have ever expected, her roommate, Elizabeth (played by two different actors during the course of the film — Jasmine Peck and Jennie Osterman) dead!!   From all appearances, she appears to have died from fright!!

The detectives arrive to investigate, with the lead investigator, Detective Richards (played by Adrienne King — best known to genre fans as Alice in Friday the 13^th and Friday the 13^th Part 2) rattling the already shook-up Laura with a series of questions about her relationship with her dead roommate.

Her partner, Detective Miller (Frank Wihbey — The Sadist), actually seems to be more interested in Laura … later, alone Richards cautions him to back the truck up.

In any case, the pair arrive at the conclusion that Laura likely had nothing to do with it and that her roommate may have actually died of some sort of seizure much earlier than when Laura first found her.   Nothing to see here … move along, move along.

For Laura, this is only the beginning of the creep-out.   A dead roommate is creepy enough (even when the body is long gone to the morgue), but there is something more going on in the apartment; in Elizabeth’s room!

Laura, asking for help from her former boyfriend, Christian (Bryan Manley Davis) proves to be frustrating … and then suddenly Elizabeth’s lover, Derrick (Michael Schantz), arrives and he’s about as spooky as they come.   What’s up with him?

It falls upon Laura to solve the mystery of what her roommate was up to.  The deeper she digs, the more she discovers that what was going on with Elizabeth was pretty dark.   Meanwhile, as the audience, you have come to the conclusion that Laura needs to stop digging, pack up her stuff and get the hell out of there before all of those sinister manifestations become the real deal!!

As to bonus features, the DVD edition is a movie-only presentation.   The Blu-ray SKU comes with commentary, a behind-the-scenes featurette and Spieler’s 2011 short film titled No Remorse for Bloodshed.

Paramount Home Entertainment Tabs Oct. 11 For The Blu-ray Release Of Paranormal Activity: The Ultimate Chills Collection

Paramount Home Entertainment is dialing up the Halloween-season horror meter to eleven with the October release news this past week.

Not only is the Paranormal Activity: The Ultimate Chills Collection heading home on Blu-ray on Oct. 11, but the following week, Oct. 18, both DVD and Blu-ray editions of director William Brent Bell’s Orphan: First Kill will be available for genre fans to savor.

Writer/director Oren Peli’s Paranormal Activity was shot on a micro budget back in 2007 and went the film festival route, got picked up by Paramount, a new ending was shot, it was “spiffed-up” a bit (technically) and for well under a million dollars it went out theatrically in late September of 2009 and pulled in $108 million in ticket sales.   A film franchise was born!!

Included in this nine-disc Blu-ray set from Paramount are theatrical and unrated viewing options for Paranormal Activity, Paranormal Activity 2 (October of 2010; $84.7 million), Paranormal Activity 3 (October of 2011; $104 million), Paranormal Activity 4 (October of 2012; $53.9 million), Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones (January of 2014; $32.5 million) and Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension (October of 2015; $18.2 million).

Plus, there is Blu-ray debut of the 2021 direct-to-streaming release of director William Eubank’s Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin (included here are 20-minutes worth of deleted scenes and an alternate ending) … and documentary filmmaker Joe Bandelli’s feature-length documentary titled Unknown Dimension: The Story of Paranormal Activity.

If that isn’t enough to give you goosebumps, then wait a week and experience the horror of director William Brent Bell’s Orphan: First Kill, a prequel to the summer of 2009 chiller, Orphan.

The ARR is 60 days and box office receipts currently stand at $5.4 million.

David Leitch's Bullet Train Arrives On Oct. 18 Courtesy Of Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment announced this past week that Oct. 18 will be the street for a three-SKU helping of David Leitch’s hit film adaptation of Japanese novelist Kôtarô Isaka’s 2010 high-speed thriller, Bullet Train.

Starring Brad Pitt as “Ladybug,” a professional hitman on an otherwise routine assignment, who suddenly discovers that things are very, very complicated (and deadly) on the bullet train from Tokyo to Kyoto … surviving to the end of the line could take some luck (oops, Ladybug, as it turns out is a on a bad luck streak).

The ARR is 74 days and domestic theatrical ticket sales were a solid $96.4 million.

Planned for distribution to the home entertainment packaged media marketplace are Combo Pack editions for the 4K Ultra HD (with Blu-ray) and Blu-ray (with DVD) formats, plus a stand-alone DVD version will also be available.

As to bonus features, common to all three release SKUs are a pair of featurettes — “Mission Accomplished: Making of Bullet Train” and “Trained Professionals: The Cast.”   Exclusive to the Combo Pack buying options are commentary from director David Leitch (Atomic Blonde, Deadpool 2), who is joined by scriptwriter Zak Olkewicz and producer Kelly McCormick, outtakes, a blooper reel and the featurette titled “All Aboard the Pain Train: Stunts.”
