Century-Fox Home Entertainment had to think it through and the decision that
they’ve arrived at makes all the sense in the world. Here’s the problem: What do you do with two
smash animated theatrical hits — Epic and The Croods? You can’t cannibalize sales by jamming them
on top of each other and you can’t release both of them prior to Labor Day (dog
days of summer … that sort of thing).
Epic got an Aug. 20 date, so The Croods will get a
three-SKU launch on Oct. 1 (Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack with and without a 3D
version and a stand-alone DVD). A
leisurely ARR of 193 days is the result (box office was a stellar $186.4
million). Perfect!
