Sony Pictures Home Entertainment announced this past
week that director Rob Reiner’s 1986 film adaptation of the Stephen King short
story, Stand by Me,
will be getting a new 4K scan from the original camera negative for release on
Aug. 27 as a 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack edition.
The timing of the release coincides perfectly with
the arrival of King’s It Chapter Two in
theatres nationwide on Sept. 6.
Bonus features include never-before-seen deleted and
alternate scenes, “Picture-in-Picture” commentary with filmmaker Rob Reiner and
actors Wil Wheaton and Corey Feldman, an additional vintage commentary option
with Reiner and director Michael Gillis’ 2000 short documentary titled, Walking
the Tracks: The Summer of Stand By Me.
It is interesting to look back down the corridor of
time to see how films have stood the test of time (or not). The 1986 crop of Best Picture nominees
included Platoon (the
winner), A Room With a View, Children of a Lesser God,
Hannah and Her Sisters and The
Mission.
Of the five, only Platoon has really
“stood the test of time” … totally ignored by the members of the Academy of
Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for Best Picture consideration, and now acclaimed
as cinematic gems, are Reiner’s Thanksgiving-season theatrical rollout of Stand by
Me and director James Cameron’s summer of 1986
sci-fi masterpiece, Aliens. Go figure.
