First time on Blu-ray, that was the news from Warner
Bros. Home Entertainment this past week.
Aug. 11 is the street date for novelist Pete Dexter,
who had written both the book and the screenplay for director Stephen
Gyllenhaal’s 1991 mini-series, Paris Trout (Dexter
was nominated for an Emmy), and writer/director Nora Ephron (who was nominated
for three Oscars for her writing skills — Sleepless
in Seattle, When Harry Met Sally and Silkwood) collaboration
for the 1996 hit film Michael,
starring John Travolta as the anything-but-holy archangel Michael.
Part comedy, part moral tale … and blessed with Nora
Ephron’s witty way with romance, Michael
proved to be a monster theatrical hit during Christmas-season of 1996 when it
arrived in theatres nationwide. This was
post-Pulp Fiction for
Travolta, who got a fresh start with the release of Tarantino’s film in the
fall of 1994 … Get Shorty, Broken Arrow, Phenomenon and Michael all
proved that he was back in a big way!
Travolta eats up the screen with his slovenly angel
performance, while the seemingly unlikely pairing of William Hurt and Andie MacDowell
provide the romantic sparks. Jean
Stapleton, Bob Hoskins and Teri Garr co-star.
