Arrow Video, with domestic sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, has set July 27 as the street date for a new 4K Ultra HD edition of writer/director Dario Argento’s giallo/horror tale, The Cat O’ Nine Tails, starring Karl Malden, James Franciscus and Catherine Spaak.
This is a new 4K film restoration from the film’s original camera negative.
The Bird with the Crystal Plumage and The Cat O’ Nine Tails have become iconic giallo movies that took the uniquely Italian murder mystery genre into the realm of horror … and in doing so brought “Euro Horror” to the United States.
While it is a certainty that any good genre fan has both of these films in their collections — as either previously released DVD or Blu-ray editions — July 27 might be the time to consider an upgrade to the 4K Ultra HD format.
So, what’s included here? First off, both the original Italian language track (with English subtitles) and the U.S. theatrical English-language track are included.
Next, there is commentary from film critics Alan Jones (“Dario Argento: the Man, the Myths, the Magic”) and Kim Newman and a quartet of featurettes — “Nine Lives,” “The Writer O’ Many Tales,” “Child Star” and “Giallo in Turin” — and an extensive collection of promotional material from the film, including trailers, reprinted lobby cards and an illustrated collector’s booklet.
