Mill Creek Entertainment will be joining forces with Mutiny Pictures on July 6 for the DVD debut of director Brendan Kyle Cochrane’s Equal Standard.
The film opens with a seemingly tranquil introduction to husband Chris Jones (Tobias Truvillion — The Marcus Garvey Story, Person of Interest. Hitch … as Vincent Jones on One Life to Live) and his wife, Jackie (Syleena Johnson — Couples Therapy, Touched), who are black and both members of the NYPD — he’s a detective, she a precinct sergeant. It is a the calm before the storm.
As if taken from today’s headlines, it’s blue-on-blue violence as Chris, while off-duty late one evening with his buddy, is confronted by two white detectives. The city is already on edge from a police shooting and this encounter quickly spirals out of control as Chris defends himself — as he is trained to do. When the dust settles, detective McKenzie (Rob Minutoli) is dead and Chris is wounded.
Things just got really ugly at Internal Affairs. Not only are they investigating the police shooting of a black suspect (which has issues of its own), but now they’ve got this “friendly fire” incident to look into. The city is on edge, the “special interest” groups are pushing their agendas and it doesn’t help matters that McKenzie’s family are also NYPD … and they want blood.
Filmmaker Brenda Kyle Cochrane doesn’t take the easy route with an A-to-B-to-C storyline about NYPD police issues, but rather blends in the other aspects of such an encounter. Stories like this are not just black-and-white, but shades of gray. The various players, from street gangs to politician; from the police to special interest groups … family, friends. It gets complicated. Violence, betrayal, corruption those are all the element Cochrane’s Equal Standard … on DVD this coming July 6 from Mill Creek Entertainment.
