Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has created a quick-window for director Florian Zeller’s Best Picture nominee, The Father, which was adapted by Zeller from his own stage play. Announced this past week it will be available on May 18 as both DVD and Blu-ray product offerings.
The Father was another one of those goofy Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences nominees for 2020, in that it did not open theatrically until February of this year. For the record, the ARR for that May 18 street date works out to 81 days.
Despite being nominated for Best Picture and both Anthony Hopkins winning the Best Actor Oscar and Florian Zeller winning the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, the film itself has only generated $1.7 million in ticket sales. That’s absolutely criminal for a Best Picture nominee. It will be the Sony Pictures Home Entertainment DVD and Blu-ray releases that will finally introduce the film to a wider audience.
Bonus features include deleted scenes and a pair of featurettes — “Homecoming: Making The Father” and “Perception Check: Portrait of The Father.”
