The Invisible Man: The Complete Series On DVD From The Film Chest On Nov. 16

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey

The Film Chest has selected Nov. 16 as the street date for the classic British television series based on H.G. Wells’ 1897 novel, The Invisible Man.

Producer Ralph Smart, who had produced some action series for British television featuring historian characters — William Tell (with Conrad Phillips as William Tell) and The Buccaneers (starring Robert Shaw) — hit upon the idea of using the H.G. Wells story as the backbone for an espionage series, which turned Wells’ mad villain, Dr. Jack Griffin, into a Cold War spy in service to England.

Dr. Peter Brady (Tim Turner — The Dam Busters, A Night to Remember) is busy working for the government on research related to light refraction and the possibility of rendering objects invisible.   Things go wrong and suddenly Brady finds himself invisible … the powers that be are having none of him being on the loose with such a secret and lock him up!!

It wouldn’t have been much of a series with an invisible man locked in a cell until he grew old and died.  Instead, Brady convinces the government that he’d be the perfect “undercover” agent … and thus began a series of 26 assignments (episodes).

The Film Chest has all 26 of these “spy thriller” episodes heading to DVD as a three-disc set on Nov. 16.   So successful was Smart with this series, that he turned around and produced both Danger Man (aka: Secret Agent) and Secret Agent with Patrick McGoohan.
