As a reminder that a Best Picture Oscar used to mean something, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has targeted June 7 as the street for two legendary giants of the silver screen that will be available for film aficionados as 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack editions.
Both films, Lawrence of Arabia and The Bridge on the River Kwai, feature 4K film restorations from their respective original camera negatives.
The first of these, in order of release year, is David Lean’s 1957 Best Picture-winner, The Bridge on the River Kwai, which also won Oscars for Best Actor (Sir Alec Guinness), Best Director, Best Writing, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing and Best Music Scoring.
Bonus features include “Crossing the Bridge: Picture-in-Picture Graphics Track,” the “Making of The Bridge on the River Kwai” featurette, plus vintage video materials that include William Holden and Alec Guinness on The Steve Allen Show and more.
Director David Lean’s 1962 epic, Lawrence of Arabia, won Best Picture in 1962, plus David Lean collected his second Best Director Oscar (he was nominated for seven different films), Freddie Young won Best Cinematography (he would also win for Ryan’s Daughter and Doctor Zhivago), Anne V. Coates won Best Editing (she was nominated on four addition occasions, including The Elephant Man and In the Line of Fire) and John Cox won for Best Sound (he was also nominated for The Guns of Navarone and Becket).
This is a double-disc 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack, featuring two different viewing options for the film.
Bonus features include deleted scenes, archival video sessions and an impressive compilation of featurettes.
