Ralph Tribbey, DVD & Blu-ray Release Report

Mill Creek Entertainment is on to something here!!   First, in mid-January there were the two four-disc DVD collections titled Through the Decades: 1960s Film Collection and Through the Decades: 1970s Film Collection.

On Apr. 12, Mill Creek was back with two more four-disc movie collections, Through the Decades: 1980s Film Collection and Through the Decades: 1990s Film Collection.

Each of these wonderful movie assemblies containing 10, 11 or 12 films … ranging from comedies to dramas to action flicks and horror or sci-fi entries.

One success story deserves another, and so word arrived this past week that two more ten-film, four-disc DVD collections will be heading home on June 7.

The first of these is titled Through the Decades: 2000s Film Collection and includes director Tony Scott’s 2001 thriller, Spy Game, starring Robert Redford and Brad Pitt, as well as writer/director Jeff Wadlow’s 2005 horror/mystery, Cry Wolf, where a high school game turns into a serial killer nightmare.

Rounding out this ten-strong film collection are 21 Grams, The Emperor’s Club, The Hitcher and The Shape of Things.

The companion release on June 7 is Through the Decades: 2010s Film Collection, which also showcases ten films in a four-disc DVD set.

So, what recent gems are including in this movie collection?   For starters, we have a pair of sci-fi films that begin with Matthijs van Heijningen, Jr.’s 2011 remake of The Thing, starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton and Ulrich Thomsen (the third theatrical release spun from John W. Campbell, Jr.’s 1938 novella titled “Who Goes There?” … The Thing from Another World, directed by Christian Nyby in 1951 and The Thing … John Carpenter’s 1982 version).

This sci-fi thriller is teamed with George Nolfi’s 2011 film adaptation of Philip K. Dick’s short story, “Adjustment Team,” which was released theatrically as The Adjustment Bureau, starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt.

If you are looking for action, then look no further than director Daniel Espinosa’s 2012 spy thriller Safe House, starring Ryan Reynolds along with Vera Farmiga, Denzel Washington and Robert Patrick, filmmaker Anton Corbijn’s 2010 film adaptation of Martin Booth’s assassin-on-the-run tale, “A Very Private Gentleman,” starring George Clooney , which was released theatrically as The American, and director Baltasar Kormákur remake of the 2008 Icelandic/Dutch action tale, Reykjavik-Rotterdam, which was retitled and released theatrically in 2012 as Contraband, starring Mark Wahlberg, Giovanni Ribisi and Kate Beckinsale.
