Director Scott Derrickson's Black Phone Races Home On Aug. 16 From Universal Pictures Home Entertainment

DVD & Blu-ray Release Report, Ralph Tribbey
Universal Pictures Home Entertainment will be turning director Scott Derrickson’s film adaptation of Joe Hill’s 2004 short story, Black Phone, in just 53 days from its theatrical launch to its home entertainment packaged media marketplace release with this past week’s announcement that Aug. 16 will be the street date for a two-SKU product offering.

Domestic box office receipts are a stellar $83.1 million, which makes the ARR of 53 days a little surprising.   One suspects that the quick turn is being driven by streaming windows and is completely unrelated to the film’s theatrical success.

Planned for release are a Combo Pack edition for the Blu-ray (with DVD) format, as well as a stand-alone DVD edition.

Bonus features include commentary from filmmaker Scott Derrickson (Doctor Strange, Sinister, The Day the Earth Stood Still), deleted scenes, the short film titled Shadowprowler and four featurettes — “Ethan Hawke’s Evil Turn,” “Answering the Call: Behind the Scenes of The Black Phone,” “Devil in the Design” and “Super 8 Set.”
