Wild Eye Releasing, with sales and distribution support provided by MVD Entertainment Group, will be bringing director Jason Baker’s Smoke and Mirrors: The Story of Tom Savini: Collector's Edition to the Blu-ray marketplace this coming Oct. 11. A movie-only version will also be available on DVD the same date.
Known among the film community — and genre fans far and wide — as “The King of Spatter,” Tom Savini is a wizard at makeup and special effects. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, it was only natural that he would get his start with the city’s very own horror master, George A. Romero — back-to-back films, Martin and Dawn of the Dead.
Friday the 13th, Maniac, Creepshow, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 followed … it is a long and very impressive list. His latest work is the hit horror film, The Black Phone.
And when he isn’t designing the creepiest of creepy effects, he is also a talented actor and has even dabbled with directing. Tom Savini, a genre-fan’s Everyman, effects, make-up, chills … the whole package.
Back in 2015, fellow f/x specialist Jason Baker teamed up with Savini and their extended network of industry technicians to document Savini’s long and very productive film career. Smoke and Mirrors: The Story of Tom Savini is more of a celebration than a documentary as this “extended family” of actors, directors and artists joined Savini and Baker for a wild and wicked trip down memory lane.
The Blu-ray “Collector’s Edition” that Wild Eye Releasing is putting out on Blu-ray on Oct. 11 comes loaded with something on the order of four hours-worth of bonus goodies.
There’s commentary with Savini and Baker, a treasure trove of Savini’s personal behind-the-scenes videos (Day of the Dead, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, From Dusk Til Dawn, Creepshow … and more), his personal videos from his direction of the 1990 Night of the Living Dead remake … and more.
If you are a genre-fan, be sure to check out the Blu-ray debut of Smoke and Mirrors: The Story of Tom Savini: Collector's Edition from Wild Eye Releasing on Oct. 11.
