Mill Creek Entertainment’s wildly popular “Retro VHS Collection” line of Blu-ray releases has a new addition this Oct. 4. That would be director Antoine Fuqua’s 1998 debut as feature film director, The Replacement Killers, starring Chow Yun-Fat and Mira Sorvino.
After honing his skills for eight years as a music video filmmaker for the likes of Hi-Five, Toni Braxton, Stevie Wonder and Seiko Matsuda — to mention just a few of the recording artists he worked with — Fuqua got the opportunity to direct his first film … he hasn’t looked back as hit after hit followed. Training Day, Tears of the Sun, Brooklyn’s Finest, Olympus has Fallen, the two Equalizer movies … and more from this successful debut.
Here we have professional assassin John Lee (Chow Yun-Fat — Bulletproof Monk, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) on the job as contracted by Los Angeles Triad gangster Terence Wei (Kenneth Tsang) to get revenge for the death of his gangster son in a police raid. If Lee is successful, his long-standing obligation to Wei is completed.
But Lee balks at murdering the seven-year-old son of the Detective Stan Zedkov (Michael Rooker — as Yondu in the Guardians of the Galaxy series, plus such films as Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, Slither, Cliffhanger, The Bone Collector, etc.), the cop who shot Wei’s son. This puts him on the outs with the Triad and Wei puts a contract on his own assassin … and his family back in China!!
Lee has one out, find professional forger Meg Coburn (Mira Sorvino) and obtain a new passport and travel documents to get out of the country and back to China. Things don’t go as planned and before you know it, both Lee and Coburn are being hunted by Wei’s new troop of “replacement killers.”
Non-stop action … a trademark of future Antoine Fuqua films. Check out The Replacement Killers on Blu-ray from Mill Creek Entertainment on Oct. 4.
