The Criterion Collection announced its April release slate this past week, which includes three new 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack presentations.
Director Ingmar Bergman’s 1957 classic, The Seventh Seal, has new 4K film restoration ready on Apr. 18.
Both the original Swedish language version (with English subtitles), as well as English-dubbed alternative are available here as viewing options. Peter Cowie (Bergman expert … “Ingmar Bergman: A Critical Biography”) provides commentary and Criterion is also including documentary filmmaker Marie Nyreröd’s 2004 feature-film Bergman Island (also in Swedish with English subtitles) as a bonus.
Also getting a 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack release on Apr. 11 is director Terry Gilliam’s 1991 film release of The Fisher King.
Bonus goodies included commentary from director Terry Gilliam, a series of video sessions with actors and crew members, deleted scenes and more.
And finally on the 4K front in April from the Criterion Collection, we have the debut of director Ruben Östlund’s Triangle of Sadness on Apr. 25. In addition to the 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack, there will be both DVD and Blu-ray selections.
Launched at the Cannes Film Festival in May of last year, winning the Palme d'Or for director Ruben Östlund, Triangle of Sadness worked the festival circuit for the balance of 2022, with a theatrical release domestically in early October. The ARR works out to 200 days and the box office take was $4.2 million.
Bonus features include two as yet untitled featurettes and a video session with Östlund.
Lastly, a three-disc, five-film collection of films from director Steve McQueen will be available on Blu-ray on Apr. 25.
Titled Small Axe: Five Film by Steve McQueen, the collection includes Mangrove, Lovers Rock, Red, White and Blue, Alex Wheatle and Education.
